Not quite true. The gov wanted Facebook to pay news sites instead of just rehosting their content so Meta pulled news on their platforms from Canada

I’m super happy with this result. It’s reducing the amount of political and racist crap. By dialing down the rhetoric the nutbags are losing their audiences and starting to fade away.

If there was no social media those idiot “truckers” (domestic terrorists) would never have happened.

They did in Canada ... which means that actual news on Facebook doesn't exist and instead it was replaced with conspiracy theories, hoax sites, scams, talk show hosts, extremists, podcasters and click bait ads and videos of complete absolute nonsense that a good portion of the population accept as 'news'
