No, the Bible is used to hold women down by these "Christians".

In actuality it mostly contradicts itself, or says that men and women are equal.

The first evidence people usually cite is 1 Corinthians 11-16. This is the part that talks about women must be silent. However, it says the in the very same passage that they can pray and prophecise in the church. It also says women must remain covered. There are not many even far-right American churches where this is followed. Because we looked at that part and said "huh, Paul is writing to the culture he lives in here and we need to view it through that lens, rather than as actual instructions".

Indeed the same man that supposedly wrote "Women must remain silent in church" also wrote letters extolling the virtues of female leadership of his early Christian church.

And in Galatians 3:28 he says "There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

The culture at the time was patriarchal and women had no rights, but Jesus always preached the antithesis of this, and if Christians were honest about what Christ believed the world would be a much much better place.
