This is mostly accurate. I think it's classic in-group/out-group psychology where they enjoy making a straw man out of their opponents, then mocking the straw man (who is presumably "triggered" despite not existing).
Worth pointing out that no one is immune from this type of tribalism. Even if it is applied more lazily by one side.
