With the number of people concerned about privacy, it is a wonder why chrome is even popular.

No offense intended, but this is a bad take. There are plenty of alternatives to Chromium-based browsers. I haven't used one in a couple years at this point (apart from using Edge on servers for work purposes). In fact, ~39% of all mobile browsers are not Chrome. Chrome became popular because Google was seen as a 'good' company years ago, and Chrome was simpler, faster, and more powerful than other browsers at the time. It doesn't have any of these benefits any more.
