But none really worked, as the company repeatedly discovered that different international regions have different tastes.

It's not really about "tastes", it's about government. One that tried to curb emissions but instead achieved the opposite, creating a massive market for oversized trucks. One that repeatedly embraces car infrastructure everywhere. And one that subsidized and artificially deflates fuel costs so that Americans can be careless with their fuel use. And one where fuel prices are a determining factor in a "successful" President.
