It does expand faster the farther away you get from your frame of reference...and it might also be expanding at different rates in different places.

The latter in no way implies alien architecture. Watch an explosion in slow motion...it isn't a perfect sphere. I know that isn't a very precise analogy, but it demonstrates how a natural, explosive process can result in something being oddly shaped.

Yeah, I don’t mean alien as intelligent, just profoundly strange and different.

But I do appreciate that visualization, it helps provide a useful frame of reference.
