Saturn Classic Enriched:

The Sega Saturn classic game Radiant Silvergun has been given a significant fan-made update that brings its features closer to modern ports. Developed by Alex “trap15” Marshall, the patch took a year to produce and introduces elements from other versions like a Ikaruga-style chain scoring system for a more streamlined gaming experience.

Features Added:

  • Chain Scoring System: Inspired by Ikaruga's system, this feature is implemented in Xbox 360 ports and other recent releases of the game. It adds depth to gameplay with a scoring mechanism that encourages continuous enemy eliminations.

  • Special Scoring Mode: A mix of original and Ikaruga-based systems.

  • Two-Button Playstyle: Originally exclusive to the arcade version on Sega's ST-V Titan board, this mode simplifies the control scheme with only three weapons available.

Additional Enhancements:

In addition to these features, players now have the ability to access the Option+ menu immediately upon starting the game. This update makes the Saturn version of Radiant Silvergun one of the most feature-rich on the market compared to other ports, with one notable exception: it lacks the HD visuals seen in other versions.

Accessing the Patch:

The patch is available for download here, allowing fans to experience these enhancements firsthand and enjoy a more complete version of this Sega classic.

What are your thoughts on fan-made updates like this? Do you think they help in preserving classic games, or do they potentially diminish the original experience for some players?

Hey there, I have been dancing around some games for the Steam Sale. I know it's goofy as they're pocket change, but I really like to have a curated and minimal library of games. So the three I have been dancing around are the three listed. And figured there'd be no better place to ask than here. I like to play some retro games quite a bit. Some because I played them when I was younger. Some because they just sort of click with my adult brain. Most games nowadays move too fast, or are too intense for me. And I can't really vibe with a lot of them. I know Steam has this refund option, and in the end if that's the way I go (and give the lot a try) - so be it. But I really am interested in other's thoughts. So please feel free to give them here.

Arcanum - Is this game actually playable when it's turn-based? VtM is one of my favorite games of all time, and it's pretty much why I am interested in this game. I am worried that this game might be too difficult to play if not in real-time. Likewise, I am worried there might not be a quest log - which makes things a bit rougher for an idiot like me who has trouble translating short-term to long-term memory. I am open to following a guide, but enjoy just playing a game more. I know at least one of you has have to have played this, give me the 411.

Sword of the Samurai - I have played The Wind and The Wilting Blossom like a crackhead. I'm mixed, and grew up with Japanese-esq stuff around the house. Some how the aesthetic just calms me right down. Like a baby being swaddled. This game looks quite interesting. I know that it can be somewhat formulaic from the Youtube videos I watched. But there's some real shine in there. I am just worried that ultimately it becomes quite redundant and is low in replayability. Let me know of your love/hate relationship with this game.

Challenge of the Five Realms - There is something about this that really calls to me. I saw some gameplay on Youtube and it looks rough. But funny. Not just funny, interesting. I saw someone say they were grumpy it was on-rails. I don't really mind that. Even if I got one good go out of it, I'd be open to it. I am just not sure how the game's systems translate to modern times. So if you've played this, please tell me your opinion on it.

Okay, big thanks to people if any respond!

Promising New Action RPG: The Secret of the Four Winds is an upcoming action role-playing game (RPG) that's capturing attention as a unique addition to the retro gaming scene. Developed by Kai Magazine Software, known for its work on homebrew games for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, this new title combines elements from classic franchises like Final Fantasy, Snatcher, and Shadowrun into an immersive storyline.

Featuring slick animated cut-scenes and detailed environments, it's clear that the team has put considerable effort into creating a visually appealing experience.

A standout feature is the custom board included in the cartridge, which houses an audio enhancement chip capable of delivering music quality on par with a Sega CD/Mega-CD. This innovative solution allows players to enjoy CD-quality soundtracks without needing additional hardware, enhancing the gaming experience significantly.

However, it's worth noting that while the game supports both the Mk1 and Mk2 versions of the Genesis/Genius CD (the cartridge version), its compatibility with the Genesis 3 system is limited. Moreover, playing the game might require disconnecting the Sega CD if you're aiming for the full CD-quality audio experience.

You can pre-order now: The Secret of the Four Winds has been made available for pre-order, offering different regional variants to cater to a wide audience. For an enhanced collection experience, there's also a collector's edition that comes with additional goodies.

Is the enhanced audio one of the main draws of this game for you?

Minecraft, a titan of the video game industry with over 300 million copies sold since its release in 2011, is set to expand its legacy by being ported to two iconic consoles from the past: the Sega Dreamcast and the Nintendo GameCube. This news was announced by A Flock of Meese, a developer known for indie game development efforts.

The port is an unofficial venture, not endorsed by Mojang or Microsoft, which holds the intellectual property rights. A Flock of Meese has been active in social media discussions, showcasing their dedication to recreating Minecraft's unique experience on these retro systems. They've emphasized an intention to replicate mechanics closely while adding a fresh touch through emergent gameplay features.

Background On The Port

  • This isn't the first time Minecraft has reached Sega consoles; fans also have access to ClassiCube, a fan-made sandbox game for Dreamcast based on Creative Mode from the original Minecraft.

Implications Of The Port

  • Bringing Minecraft's immersive crafting experience to the Dreamcast and GameCube promises a unique opportunity for fans of these consoles. The challenge here might be adapting the game's mechanics onto hardware significantly more limited than its current-gen platforms.

Thoughts And Discussion

  • What are your thoughts on this port? Do you believe it will breathe new life into these consoles or fall short due to hardware limitations?
  • Would you consider revisiting Minecraft on a retro console, or do you think it's better suited for modern hardware with enhanced visuals and capabilities?

  • Leaked a few days ago, the new handheld from ANBERNIC has been officially confirmed with its name: RG40XX H.

  • It features a4" IPS full-laminated display, 5G Wifi module, Bluetooth connectivity, HDMI out and Moonlight streaming capability. The exact CPU model is rumored to be Allwinner H700.

  • It has a rounded look compared to ANBERNIC's previous designs like the 353 series.

  • Available in three colours: black, grey, and blue, with LED joysticks that can select from over 16 million color options. This might not be practical, considering only about 25 different color settings would have been sufficient.

  • Expected to support emulation for games from PSP, Dreamcast, and N64 consoles, potentially at a price under $99. The official pricing has yet to be announced.

What do you think of ANBERNIC's decision to continue with their naming pattern or would you prefer them to adopt something more distinctive?

I’m putting a lot of my old games on my steam deck by buying their PC ports whenever they go on sale.

It got me wondering, is anyone aware of games where it’s actually better to run the console version through an emulator than play the native PC version?

Rage (Xbox360) (feddit.uk)
submitted 1 week ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I've spent four hours playing Rage today via the Xbox Series backwards compatibility. (Is it emulation or real hardware?)

Anyway, for an Xbox360 game I think this looks really good and still holds up today. The speedy loading times certainly help as well.

I did try and play a while ago on the PS3. I don't know if Rage was pushing the PS3 to the limit, but as you turned around, you would catch models and textures loading in. Apparently you could alleviate this a bit by installing an SSD but you're still limited by the PS3's older SATA connection.

Having played this on my Series X, I don't know if the Xbox Series is almost void of this because of the modern hardware or if the Xbox360 version was actually the better machine with this game engine.

I completed Rage 2 a year or so ago when it was given away free on the Epic Game Store and loved it. The original game is essentially the same but on a much smaller scale. It's a balanced gameplay of driving and FPSs sections.

I LOL'd on my first encounter when I've if the bad guys shouted, "Where's that wanker!" 😆

when did you get it and why? how often do you use it?

If you don’t own a retro system or console, what is the oldest system you emulate or which system would you like to own in the future?

For me, my oldest system is an Atari 800xl (i’m counting early home computers). I purchased it on a whim when Netflix’s Bandersnatch interactive movie was briefly popular. I was studying (and still am) computer science and was curious on what you could all do on a home computer from the early 80s. Turns out, quite a lot and I’ve had a lot of fun sifting through the 50+ floppies i have finding everything from home finance software, a plethora home brew games, and even floppy magazines (a bunch of articles on a floppy. not sure the proper name)

when i first got it i was on it more than my modern computer, but after moving it has been gathering some dust in its box. i’m hoping to eventually find a home for it in my home so i can use it more.

a fun thing of note is that it still has the saran wrap on its chrome parts, and it has a Sears Service sticker on the bottom of it when one of the previous owners had it serviced.

A modder has managed to convert an operating system that resembles Linux into a function on an unmodified Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), demonstrating impressive retro-tech innovation.

Key Points:

  • Source code is now available on GitHub: GitHub
  • The conversion involved defining the memory map, writing new system initialization code, reorganizing LUnix for Famicom's RAM specs, and creating new drivers.
  • Challenges included developing a disc driver due to unique Famicom Disk System (FDS) sector reading mechanics and visual glitches on performance.
  • Though the final product has limitations, it showcases the potential of running Unix-like systems on 1980s hardware.

Could you imagine running any specific software applications using a converted OS like this on an NES? What kind of programs would benefit most from being ported to retro consoles?
