After saying goodbye to RIF and reddit, it's time for me to move on. So far I've used 4 apps for Lemmy and this is my personal ranking:

  1. wefweb.app. Very clean design, works well and smooth experience. Overall the best implementation so far.

  2. Connect/Lift (tied). Both are solid, I prefer connect sidebar and options but I prefer the design of the posts and comments on Lift. When the comments stack in Connect it looks awful IMO.

  3. Jerboa. As a first option it was good but after so many timeouts, other design issues and multiple errors I kinda gave up on the app. After its polished I'll give it another try.

I just opened it from force of habit and to my shock it actually loaded. What's going on?

Ublock Origin rocks! Also, hello federatii.

I got this notification right in the middle of getting myself set up here. I used the awful official app only to post albums, but rif was my app for everything else. RIP in peace rif.

Old habits die hard, just saying.

When I open a post, I only want to see the parent comments. To see the reply comments of a specific parent comment, I could then unfold only these replies.

This was one of my favourite features of RiF. Does anyone know an Android app that can do this already for lemmy? Connect for Lemmy, Jerboa, Liftoff and Thunder all have nice collapsing features, but they all only start with unfolded comments, currently.

Jerboa additionally supports jumping from parent comment to the previous/next one with dedicated buttons, which is really nice and also something I was frequently using in RiF.

I noticed that when I was logged in, whenever I refreshed I would get a 429 error. However after clearing my app data, and opening the app as a subconscious abatement of boredom, I realized I was still being fed live content.

Is this accruing API calls that the devs will have to pay for?

I opened RIF app today (7/1) and saw this, any idea what's going on?

(Hopefully link/pic works)

Anyone else notice that you can still access reddit through rif if you're not logged in? I noticed after opening the app out of habit haha. You can even view NSFW content, so I'm not really sure what's going on.

I just wanted to say: if you were to take every piece of software I've ever used in my 28 years on this earth, and you added up the cumulative amount of time I spent using each of them, RiF would be the winner. And it isn't even close. And I now feel like I always took it for granted. It was always there, in the top left corner of my home screen across multiple phones and for over a decade. The software you wrote has had a greater impact on my life than any other software ever has. My only regret is that I only paid you for it the one time.

Thank you.

I know there are Jerboa and Connect for Lemmy, but RIF's impeccable interface for Android was extremely well polished. I heard the developer of RIF is somewhere here. I just want to ask the universe, is it possible?

I am pretty tight for time since my second child was born yesterday. For my first I would let my wife sleep while I held my baby and browsed reddit for hours. The timing of all this couldn't be worse for me. Nothing to do while I'm pinned down with a baby!

Anyway to try to get a sort of 1:1 subscription quickly on here? I used rif only before. I'm hoping there is a pretty close community for each subreddit I was subscribed to before. If not, eventually I'm sure there will be though.

These are the apps that I've noticed they've added support for so far. (Edit: Baconreader too.)

For those unfamiliar, you can patch these existing apps with your own oauth-client-id to continue using them.

Quick tutorial:

Navigate to /prefs/apps
Create a new app, name it whatever you want, tick "Installed App" and fill in the redirect uri field. e.g. In rif's case, it would be

redditisfun://auth

You can find what redirect URI you need by looking through the readme on the patches on Github (under the corresponding app in the Details section).

Copy the client ID string that appears in the app you just made, create a text document named reddit_client_id_revanced.txt and put it on the root of your phone's storage (/storage/emulated/0/<file here>) with that key in it.

Install the newest version of ReVanced Manager on your device, tap the Patcher tab, tap your app. Once again, make sure you're using the newest version of ReVanced Manager.

In the Patches section, tick the "Change Oauth Client Id" patch.

Patch and install (note that if you're using an app that's already installed, you might have to delete it before clicking Install once Revanced is done creating the new ask.)

Should be good to go from there.

One extra note I'll add is that you should export your app's settings if it's an option before erasing it and installing the newly patched version. rif has an option for this in Settings > Backup > Export settings (unsure about other apps, I've used nothing but rif for 10+ years lol)

Extra help can probably be found on ReVanced's Discord server if you need it.

  1. Use distributed, federated services like Lemmy, mastodon etc.
  2. Support the hosts with our own funds.
  3. Moderate our own communities.

The second point is the most important. Reddit happened because they are a corporate entity seeking profit. Let's own our social media platforms by actively contributing funds to them.

Seems that someone at Reddit decided to grant read access to RIF, this morning I opened the app just for kicks and it wouldn't load anything. Well I tried again after lunch (Europe CET time) and it could access the front page but I was logged out. Trying to login shows a different logon page and even with valid credentials gives out a 'Bad request' response.

That means they are not just feeling the heat, they are probably burning really bad.

Best Reddit app i've ever used. You will be sorely missed. Rip RIF and Reddit.

So I was reading a article about the recent shutdown and it mentioned Reddit is Fun still works but you can't log in... so I logged out of my account and bam everything was working fine. I dont know when it will actually shut down but this is for whoever needs to hear this. Also thank you Lemmy for welcoming us refugees in.

Back in 2015, I was in the hospital for two weeks, trying not to die (again), and I couldn't have a laptop but I had my phone. Reddit was possible due to RiF.

Thanks so much for it.

72

How? Why?

I was logged out but I can use RIF.

73

I'll replace the icon on my homescreen with a Lemmy app, but I can't bring myself to fully uninstall RiF.

Thanks for a great app!

Here is the community Lemmy Apps

Here is a list of all the Lemmy apps: https://lemmy.world/post/465785

Plenty of devs have moved to Lemmy, e.g. Sync, Boost, Slide, etc - and while I never used Apollo, the existing sentiment is that Wefwef is very similar, if that's something you're looking for.

I'm sure there's something for everyone!

People don't care about you, only what you can do for them. Thats a deeply cynical point of view but its emblematic of Reddit now.

I am glad to find a new space that promises a better future than the corporatised one of my former haunt.

I wish you all fun and frolics in the new adventure.
