Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has hinted that in future some subreddits could be paywalled, as the company seeks to devise new sources of income.

He suggested that the company might experiment with paywalled subreddits as it looks to monetize new features. “I think the existing, altruistic, free version of Reddit will continue to exist and grow and thrive just the way it has,” Huffman said. “But now we will unlock the door for new use cases, new types of subreddits that can be built that may have exclusive content or private areas, things of that nature.”

This is another move likely to anger Redditors. While the platform is a commercial enterprise, its value derives almost entirely from freely offered user content. That means Redditors feel at least some sense of ownership in a community endeavour, so the company needs to tread carefully when it comes to monetization at user expense.

I'd been using the Joey app to keep tabs on a few subreddits I'm fond of. It finally stopped working today.

Been on Lemmy since day -5 of the API fiasco. Was excited to recognize the unnecessary inventions guy while scrolling, only to be super disappointed when I realized it was a TikTok ad! ☹️

i'm gonna need some advance notice if a super secret step squad comes here

That's the endgame we've been warning about.

On Reddit if you have a new account that wasn't five years old and had over 9,000 upvotes you'd be de-facto banned from 90% of all subreddits by AutoModerator removing everything you posted. Even then if you didn't use proper bracketing or whatever you'd get removed as well.

Part of me thinks this was intentional to get people attached to their accounts that conveniently had their life stories, writing styles, beliefs, likes and dislikes all in one place.

What is this product, and what does it do?

Reddit Account Manager allows you to keep track of all of your accounts, subreddit subscriptions, and bookmarks—all in one place.

How does this product help me?

Reddit Account Manager acts as a database repository for your Reddit accounts, so that if and when you decide to delete your Reddit account, you have your accounts, subscriptions, and bookmarks all in one place. With Reddit Account Manager, you'll:

  • Know exactly when you created every account
  • Know how much post/comment karma each account has
  • Know when it's time to delete an account
  • Have all your subscriptions mapped out and ready to go for the next account you create
  • Save all your bookmarks, even if your accounts are long gone
  • Know when an account is active, deleted, or not created yet

Why did you build this product?

Despite many Redditors' desires to delete their account and start a new one, many refrain from doing so for multiple reasons. Reasons include (but are not limited to):

  • Losing track of the subreddits they're subscribed to
  • Losing bookmarks
  • Lack of data export functionality from Reddit
  • Time and effort in switching (and ditching) accounts

Why have multiple Reddit accounts, and why would I want to delete them periodically?

All of your Reddit activity is public. Over time, you become increasingly identifiable. By having multiple Reddit accounts designated to specific subreddits/interests, and deleting them after some time, you:

  • Maintain pseudo-anonymity
  • Subscribe to different subreddits across different accounts
  • Keep a low profile and mix up data

Which platform do I need to use Reddit Account Manager?

You can use it out-of-the-box with any the following:

  • Airtable
  • Baserow
  • Notion
  • Coda
  • ClickUp

Can I use this to store or migrate my Reddit data now that Reddit has killed third-party apps?

Absolutely, yep. You can (and should) use it however it works best for you.

Why did you make it free?

We all deserve privacy and to not be tracked all over the web. I knew this could bring value to every single Reddit user who wants to delete their account, start a new one, or simply keep track of everything you want to, so that if you ever do want to destroy your account, you'll be able to without worrying about losing track of it all.

And Reddit's recent decisions, Reddit Account Manager serves as a great tool to export your data and take it with you wherever you go next.

MSOutlookit is a "skin" for Reddit that makes it look like Outlook. In case the joke isn't clear it makes it easier to hide Reddit browsing at work from folks looking over your shoulder. http://pcottle.github.io/MSOutlookit/

It's just super disheartening to see Reddit themselves show this off after killing third party apps.

many of the subreddits I follow on reddit still do not have active communities on lemmy - this app fixes that itch. source code is here - https://github.com/panigrah/lurkit

After dumping Reddit what I find most refreshing is not having to add the /s when making a sarcastic comment, as I am wont to do.

I only recall one instance so far of someone yelling at me in a reply, completely oblivious to my point.

As a 12 yr Reddit lurker, Geddit fits all my needs. It sidesteps the api using rss feeds and other technical stuff I don't know about. You can view posts and comments. Favorite subreddits. But can't post/comment/vote. I'm trying my hand at engaging more on lemmy, but for more content, Geddit is perfect for me.

For anyone still interested in browsing the dumpster fire, for some reason, Baconit is still working on Xbox. I don't know if the app can still be downloaded, but it still accesses the site with no issues.

If you still have access to your account, screenshots of the last “offending” post or comment would be great. https://lemmy.world/c/banhammered

Also, all my comments deleted.

It was one of the few apps still working, it went offline today.

I used to browse reddit on rif for years before the official app even released. The official app is like "can I have a reddit, mom?" - "we have reddit at home" Reddit at home: takes an eternity to load even if it's a text post, keeps recommending me stuff I didn't sub to, full of ads, screen is filled with full sized images so it takes a lot longer to see posts that I'm willing to click on...

I miss rif. I used to lurk and look at memes on rif all the time, occasionally asking for advice on relationships or jobs or whatnot. I'm considering quitting reddit altogether, just found out about Lemmy. Is there a lotr memes or prequel memes community over here?
