Firstly, sorry if this is not the adequate place for my question; if it's the case, let me know.

The title may seem confusing, so let me detail it: I'm more of a commenter person, and some of my comments are replied, and Lemmy notifies me of those direct replies. However, there are moments when those replies receive third-party replies, so my comment turns into some kind of "sub-thread", something that's interesting for me to read and follow. For those third-party replies, I don't receive notifications, so I have to access each direct reply that was notified so to find possible "sub-threads".

There seems to me to be no option to "receive notifications for this post/comment/reply", only the automatic opt-in of notifications for direct replies.

So really isn't there such an option? Or is this an instance-specific feature and the instance I belong to (thelemmy.club) don't have it?

Hi, I just found the pict-rs option to have proxied images deleted after some days. What happens once they get deleted? Will the people using my instance still be able to see them?

Yo, I was trying to change my account name on Lemmy but I couldn't find the option in the account settings, is this feature available on lemmy?

I have an account on lemmy.ml and two days ago it started logging me out of the website whenever I close the browser tab or browser. This behaviour does not occur on other websites where I choose to stay logged in. So my browser functionality is working as intended.

Has anything changed on Lemmy, cause it used to work for years? Anything I can do?

New Lemmy admin here. I found the Theming Guide in the Lemmy docs, but it jumps directly to the 'After a theme is added' section without explaining how to add or create themes. I've searched for examples but couldn't find any configuration that includes these details.

I found hanubeki-lemmy-themes, which actually contains some good themes. However, when I copied the 5 folder to my extra_theme folder, nothing happened. Can someone guide me on how to add these themes to my instance?

Update: You should put all your css file in the extra_themes folder, each .css is a theme. For hanubeki-lemmy-themes I put all the dist and src files in extra_themes and it works. I already done this before, but my browser was [caching lemmy-ui static files for 24 hours], so when I delete the cache it just works.

Thank you Sami, it was a cash problem, I updated the post with more details

Sorry for the vague question but I'm hoping there's a lot I"m missing. I know I can edit the side bar, icon, and banner. Make the community public or private and there's a "mod posting only" option. But is that it?

Some things I'm wondering about,

  • can I turn downvotes off or is that an instance only thing? (fan community, off topic would just be removed)
  • Is there any other way to manipulate the community page like backgrounds etc?
  • Flair's or post tags? Any community settings I looked over?
  • Allowing or disallowing bots (again is this an instance thing?)

I'm fine with what it is, just wanted to make sure there wasn't more I was missing with my options in the community.

Bonus question, besides crossposting and the "new communities" community sections, is there anything else I should do with a fresh community?

Hi Lemmy friends,

Is there any way to have Lemmy's community RSS feeds provide more than 20 <item> tags at a time? Can I add a querystring variable to get the next page or two of data?

Background on what I'm trying to do: I run the Movie, TV and Game trailers community. I'd like to create a simple website / landing page that displays an ongoing roll of the latest/top/hot trailers posted to the community.

I can use the community's RSS feed for this, but the feed only includes a maximum of 20 entries (for an average end-to-end runtime of about one hour). I'd really like to get the next few pages of entries as well.

Thanks!

This still seems like the #1 entry port for folks who are new to Lemmy, but it is pretty out of date. It still recommends Combustible, which never had a stable release (Oct 1, 2023 Alpha 0.1.1), lemmyBB, with no known instances (Apr 24, 2023), Lunar, which never left Testflight (Dec 12, 2023), and the same for Memmy (Nov 6, 2023).

At the same time it is missing lots of recent apps, such as Connect, Interstellar, Arctic, or Tesseract.

Would it be possible to use a tool similar to LemmyApps or the API to keep the list updated automatically?

If someone's post is deleted, and the modlogs don't specify who performed the action (instead it is a generic name like "admin"), how can the user discuss that deletion if they have a rationale for why it should not have been deleted?

I love Lemmy and I try to spread the info about it but almost always I face one issue - people being confused. For me (and probably you) it's hard to understand what's confusing about the way Lemmy works, I mean email works on the same principle and everyone's ok with it. It basically boils down to like 3 questions:

  • Why do I need to choose a server?
  • What is the server / instance? / Is server a subreddit?
  • Is Lemmy the same thing like Reddit?

So my idea: Could we put it as a FAQ on the join-lemmy.org? Feel free to submit best answers to these questions (I try to submit mine later when I have some time). Or come up with other frequent questions you heard

I've been receiving direct messages with pretty much the same contents from different accounts for a few months now. The contents include a question which I answered but the messages keep coming. I tried to report this using Jerboa's built-in functionality but I always got an error "Report deleted". Can I do something about it or I'll just keep receiving the messages until I create a new account?

This time my question is, how long does it take for the Lemmy server I just set up to finish federation? What does the "allowed instances" list do in the admin settings? Does it allow the Lemmy server to only connect to those instances or is it a list of the starting instances from which it federates to others?

Until a few days ago I was posting youtube links, and the thumbnail and link description would be filled in automatically.

Now, there's no thumbnail image and instead of the youtube preview text for my linked video, its some generic youtube stuff in french:

  • YouTube www.youtube.com Profitez des vidéos et de la musique que vous aimez, mettez en ligne des contenus originaux, et partagez-les avec vos amis, vos proches et le monde entier.

Something broke?

If you are using https://github.com/wereii/lemmy-thumbnail-cleaner please stop and disable it as soon as possible.

We have found a security issue that allows any user to make LTC delete any locally hosted image.

I will be posting more details soon and editing this to include the information.

Asking for help, I deployed lemmy using docker and deployed lemmy on the onion network, but I found that the picture of lemmy will expose my IP address. What should I do? Tor runs on Linux and lemmy is in docker. I can deploy lemmy on onion normally, but the pictrs pictures cannot go through the onion network.

Hi, I am new to Lemmy and I just need help with something kinda QoL-ish. Is it possible to look at a post on the homepage IE http://lemmy.ca, and block the community it is coming from?

I don't want to have to manually click on the community and go to its page every time I want to block one. Is there like an extension or a specific UI mode that lets you do this? Thanks!

Sorry if this is the wrong community, not sure where else to post the question, and I'd rather avoid creating an issue over on Github.

Is there a way to check if a federated user is an administrator via the API? .get_person_details() will have the admin field set to false for all other than local admins and .get_community() only reveals the list of moderators.

I know I could scrape the admin list from the main page html, but scraping html is prone to errors if an instance uses an alternative frontend or the frontend is updated. Getting the data via the API should be a more stable solution.

Based on #3703 it seems like a decent chance that this information isn't currently exposed to federated instances though?

Support set url from posts of other fediverse softwares (ej mastodon, mitra, akkoma...)

Hello!

In the last few days I have been testing to create news posts in Lemmy communities from Mastodon and Mitra.

I have seen that the posts are created correctly, setting the title with the first line of the post, but the url is not set correctly, it puts all the content in the body, but the attached url is not set. Would there be any way to extract the url from the body to be able to set it, as is done with the title?

I attach examples:

Post created from Lemmy with url in lemmy: https://scribe.disroot.org/api/v3/post?id=532812
Post created from Mastodon without url in lemmy: https://scribe.disroot.org/api/v3/post?id=532812

The release notes for 0.19.4 mention that this version requires an upgrade to both pictrs and postgres, but there isn't any information about what versions of those are supported. Is there someplace else I should be looking for this information? Or should I just YOLO with the latest version of each?

The R site has such a feature, which can allow one to group posts from many communities into one feed.
With many communities on different instances with similar topics, it'd be useful to group them to avoid separate visits to each community.

Does lemmy have such an option?
If not, are there any lemmy clients that can provides a similar option?
Or are there known workarounds, maybe with the rss feeds or so?

Over at [email protected] we've got a sidebar with a "total subscribers" shields.io badge, like many other communities all over the Lemmyverse do. I made a simple, non-badge-related edit to the sidebar and due to what seems an aggressive image proxy, the shields.io badge address gets mangled after the edit is saved.

This is !music

This is "Community Info" from [email protected] on Jerboa. At the bottom of the screen is the midwest.social/api/v3/image_proxy image.

This is !detroit

This is "Community Info" from [email protected] on Jerboa, as an example of a working badge. At the bottom the screen is the working shields.io badge.

The pre-save preview shows everything as should be. It's only when the edit is saved does the badge address get mangled.

I contacted our fearless leader, @[email protected], and he changed an image proxy setting. Now [email protected] works as it should. Any further details or information in regards should be asked of him. Thanks.

EDIT: It seems to have been fixed thanks to @[email protected]. Running analyze verbose; in postgres.

After updating to 0.19.5 from 0.19.3 my postgres is often using up 500%+ of CPU according to docker stats and often going to 100% CPU on most cores according to htop. Also noticed in the uptime monitor:

htop shows one of the 5 postgres processes constantly on UPDATE. I think this might be part of the problem.

I'm not comfortable with postgres and am honestly completely in the dark how or where to mitigate or even pinpoint this issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

So I wrote a little web app that allows a user to move their user data, like settings and subscribed/banned communities, from one account/instance to another.

It runs completely client-side, but is hosted on GitHub for the moment. Maybe it'll be of some use!

Features:

  • Export user data from any Lemmy instance (>=v0.19)
  • Download user data as a text file
  • Modify user data in the browser, e.g. to add or remove followed instances
  • Transfer user data to the target account on the target instance

I'm experiencing some odd behavior. Lemmy communities on my server seem to have stalled (no new posts and or comments) since 2 days.

I went ahead and upgraded lemmy to 0.19.5 and postgres to the current version but to no avail so far.

.ml got banned by fail2ban but I set it on the ignore list now. any ideas where to start looking for the problems? I checked for the other big communities and they're okay it seems.

I can of course start adding logs in here but I would love to know which service or log I should start with.

Thanks for reading. Have a good one.

Edit: outgoing federation works. this post made it to ml in seconds.
