Staff at Flitwick Children's Centre, receiving the My Smile Children's Centre accreditation

The accreditation was awarded by the Oral Health Improvement Team, part of DentalHealthCare, Cambridgeshire Community Services.

My Smile Children's Centre is an accreditation awarded to children's centres and family hubs that provide a tooth friendly service for the children and families they support. This includes offering the best advice to families around toothbrushing, tooth friendly snacks and drinks, and promoting regular dental visits.

The award is supported by the Oral Health Improvement team who trained the children’s centre staff and provided resources to help them meet the accreditation requirements. The accreditation is valid for 2 years.

Councillor Steve Owen, our Executive Member for Children’s Services, said:

The My Smile accreditation shows how our children’s centres are making a real difference in the lives of families. By promoting good oral health and providing support, we’re helping to ensure that children grow up healthy and happy.

Our children's centres are vital in connecting families with the resources they need to thrive, offering a range of services, from parenting workshops to health advice, creating a supportive community where families can learn and grow together.

The drivers were convicted at Luton Magistrates' Court this week (1 October) after being spotted by our officers during a targeted enforcement exercise in May 2024.

The following individuals were convicted:

Kathryn Loveday, of Dormer Avenue, Wing, was convicted after falsely stating that her husband, the Blue Badge holder, had been dropped off when she parked in a disabled bay. CCTV evidence disproved her claims, leading to her conviction. She was fined and received penalties of £445.

Emma Welch, of Westoning Road, Harlington, was found to be using her deceased mother’s cancelled Blue Badge and admitted to the court that she mistakenly thought she could use it because she had paid for it before her mother passed away. She received fines and penalties totalling £284.

Lorraine Warnock, of Alwins Field, Linslade was found to be using her father’s Blue Badge while parking to collect his prescriptions, without the badge holder being present. She received fine and penalties amounting to £206.

Councillor John Baker, our Executive Member for Finance and Highways, said:

These convictions highlight the importance of protecting the integrity of the Blue Badge system. Misuse deprives genuine badge holders of accessible parking spaces.

Our enforcement actions and the resulting penalties send a clear message that we will not tolerate any abuse of this service, and those who misuse it will be held accountable. We will continue our enforcement efforts to protect the rights of our disabled residents.

If you suspect someone of illegally using a Blue Badge, you can report them to the council by calling 0300 300 4154 or by emailing [email protected].

The open days are running on Saturday 12 October from 9:30am and are designed to encourage children over 6 years old to try out a variety of instruments, with some sessions also open to older children and adults who already play an instrument.

Sessions include beginner ukulele, steel pans for beginners, ‘musical superstars’ for complete beginners, teaching people how to play as part of an ensemble, a folk group session and Inspiring Singers, to help people develop their singing voices.

Learners will be supported with expert guidance from Inspiring Music’s team of talented music tutors.

Councillor Steve Owen, our Executive Member for Children’s Services, said:

Learning to play music is a vital skill for young people, offering not only a creative outlet but also boosting confidence, teamwork, and discipline. Music has the power to inspire, and these open days are the perfect opportunity for young people to experience that first-hand.

Booking is required, but the sessions are free. To book, visit the link for the location you'd like to attend.
