Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes world-first laws

Seeing what kind of brainrot kids are watching, makes me think it's a good idea. I wouldn't say all content is bad, but most kids will get hooked on trash content that is intentionally designed to grab their attention.

What would be an effective way to enforce a restriction with the fewest possible side effects? And who should be the one enforcing that restriction in your opinion?

Come to think of it, the Jedi are kinda dicks, they prevented anakin becoming a master despite his obvious talented skills in saber combat and his power in the force.

Not to mention, lore wise they let mundi have relations with his family where as it would've been a kick out for anakin.

Lastly, the jedi were sorta arrogant for thinking that nothing was wrong or that they were perfect despite having literal counterarguments from rebellious masters, Qui Gonn being a good example of somebody smelling the bullshit that the jedi were involved in.

I'm currently looking for a replacement to castbox. Castbox us OK, but I want to learn what else good is out there. Bonus points for one that has movement-sensitive sleep timer the way Smart AudioBook Player has.

UPDATE: Testing out Antennapod. Looks nice, and seems to do what I want it to do. I need to experiment with the auto-download a bit and see if it behaves the way I want it to. If it does, we have a winner.

Hello folks. Is it technically possible to push the Lemmy instance by mirroring content from the public Mastodon start page to individual Lemmy pages? The interface should be able to do that? (Maybe I don't understand the Fediverse again.) If it is possible, is there a guide on how to mirror public Mastodon content to Lemmy? e.g. from this random page https://mstdn.social/explore

Apologies if this is not an Ask Lemmy worthy question, but I couldn't guess an appropriate community to post it to and welcome suggestions to where to move such a question to.

Question is as in the title: how could Batman survive what really seems like a deadly stab by Miranda Tate (=Talia Al Ghul) at the end of the movie and still have the strength to go chase the bomb, the lucidity to set up the autopilot and the coordination to jump off of the bat(wing) to safety?

Wouldn't he have bled to death (and very quickly too, even if she was trained to miss internal organs)?

We're shown that she twists the blade too and he feels the pajn (so the armor didn't really protect him).

Of course, the standard joke answer is that he's the Batman (so he can take it when others can't).

The movie is fiction and not intended to be realistic, so there really is no need for an explanation, but at other times it explains things to us. For example, the autopilot explanation at the end of the movie or that, even if it is unrealistic to heal his spine and be able to withstand several botched falls from prison, at least we're told that he's nursed back to health by the doctor inmate.

I can't seem to find any info on this, when I open the page it just responded with error 500. It was like this last week, and still is right now.

Due to a recently increased upload speed, I can now stream to some of my users 4K content from my Plex server. However, I do not have infinite hard drive space, so I would, at least initially, prefer to limit my 4K collection to films and TV show shows that actually benefit from it.

Personally, and with several of my friends, we’ve come to the agreement that 4K video has about as much advantage as 720 versus 1080. It’s not that big of a leap, and often not entirely worth the upgrade (when accounting for the hard drive space consideration, the added darkness, etc). However, with some films and TV shows, it really does make a huge difference.

With that in mind, what films and TV shows would you recommend that definitely benefit from 4K viewing?

Large enthusiastic texts as in large texts about topics, you have common with the other person and enthusiastic about.

I am a person who prefers texts over calls. Maybe that might be the reason, the people I have in my circles are more into calls than texts.

But this happened with my online friends as well whose only mode of communication is via texts.

I used to have a friend who would do so but with the topics only he was interested in lol but I used to kinda act like I'm listening to him by asking small questions . He did try to complement my listening skills once. We used to chat for hours together. Sadly life moved on and he branched away from my friend circle (which is kinda non-existent rn because life ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯).

Or am I just too boring or loud? Is this a bad habit? Sometimes I can't stop making walls of texts. (Oops here I go again)

I took my wife's car into the dealership for a warranty a few weeks ago and while they were checking stuff, they said the car needed 1300 dollars of work (piston soak and replace some transmission parts). I ended up doing the soak with my grandpa and took it to a shop for the transmission (wasnt even an issue, just a rivot replacement on a wheel well cover) and ended up saving 700 dollars after accounting for tools, jacks, jack stands, etc.

I want to start working on my own cars for things that can be done easily without expensive specialized tools, and I might be buying a house in the next year. I just want to start getting a decent collection of tools to hopefully save money in the long run.

I currently have a huge range of screwdrivers, soldering equipment, plyer set, socket set, file set, wire cutters and a small tool kit with some misc stuff.

I am mainly looking towards a torque wrench and a good spanner/wrench set, but looking for suggestions on what to get. Holding off on power tools until I wrap my head around brands and batteries.

Quitting jobs

Everyone has a job they don't like and whenever someone complains about the job that they do, there's always are going to be handfuls of people saying "QUIT UR JOB!" not really caring about whether it'll benefit the complainer or not.

Quitting a job cold is one of the dumbest things you can do when you do not have any safety nets. No savings. No jobs lined up. Nothing planned. You are putting yourself back to a place of uncertainty and it's not pleasant when that countdown starts. That countdown is tied to how much you have left to cover your expenses fully until you get another job and how long those expenses will pile up.

Because all it takes is one or two missed paychecks to upset your financial stability and the system you've made in how you pay for things.

For some people, unfortunately, quitting jobs is not as simple of an option. People are just jammed into where they are because their job market is poor or it's highly competitive even when they went to college for that job.

It does it randomly so I think it is trying to tell me something.

I work at a place where most people speak Spanish, and I want to be able to hold conversations with them. I've watched a couple of YouTube videos, but I haven't been able to retain the information. I need to write down flashcards and notes. I'm wondering, and I don't mind if it's proprietary, what is the best and fastest way to learn Spanish?

Throughout history, we have developed many methods of telling time. The most famous two examples being the clock and the sundial. The ancient Egyptians invented the clepsydra, an extremely simple device that uses dripping water as a way to tell how much time has passed. There are also, for example, hourglasses, which flow sand as a measurement of time.

Suppose, though, you were an intelligent dolphin and, for some reason, had to always have a time reference on you. Being under the water seems to present a challenge, for technology like clocks and hourglasses don't seem to be possible to make under the water, a clepsydra certainly wouldn't work since you can't pour water underwater, and a sundial wouldn't have the proper lighting. So you must improvise in order to find a way to keep track of time. How would you improvise in order to keep track of time.

This question was inspired by a conversation with someone I know on here who has been trying to curb theft. Specifically art theft. The person is an artist and has noticed how common (and sometimes seemingly random) art theft is and has been trying to curb it by taking a hit and hinting that her art is stealable (as in she wouldn't mind if it's stolen, as long as no deception is at play). This got us thinking, as though they are noble intentions and the massive backlash she has gotten for it comes off as weird, I don't think encouraging theft is a good idea, nor do I think it's a matter of kleptomania if it's digital (plus I think it would already curb kleptomania to say kleptomaniacs are allowed to take something, advice appreciated if available). But it got us talking about what they would even want to steal. Is the appeal in the rarity? The sensory input? Something else? The person is a "passive progressive" and has done something similar to curb compulsive lying, and it has somewhat worked, so maybe I'm wrong.

To those of you who habitually steal stuff or know someone who does, what aspects of stolen items increase the appeal to steal them?
