The AMD Athlon was the first CPU to hit 1GHz back in 1999, it had one core, one thread, and a one gigahertz clock rate.

Today we're hitting 6.2GHz on 96 core CPUs.

It's wild living in the future.

I had the P3 back then! Amazing CPU; very, very fast.

Yes but where are the WRX90 motherboards?

whats interesting to see is that even with decent air or h2o cooling you can get a huge uplift as sampson's entries show.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

It kind of beats the whole point,

If you need that uplift so bad in applications or games that do not scale well with 96 cores or 192 threads, your better off using a Ryzen to be fair.

This is a workhorse - not intended to be OC'ed to snot. And even if you do the power requirements would be utterly insane and likely over 1.5KWh when fully stressed.

And it too can be yours, for the low-low price of $9,999.99!

I have a feeling these are going to hold some decent value for many years to come. Till then I shall stare into the window :(

About 20 years or less. I mean those used 18 core Xeons are now available for $100. The issue at that point is not the processors but motherboards.

Do you actually need something like this? You'd probably be better off looking at used Epyc chips.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Need got nothing to do with it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Some people need this kind of chip. That's why I asked. If he needs it but on a budget, Epyc chips from previous gens or from this gen in the future would be much better value.

Would be fascinating to see the power draw numbers on that thing.

Since the liquid cooled ones were running up to 1k, this thing must've been hitting up 1.5, 2k watts power draw.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

In the article are written 395watts max power usage

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

There's no way that that's the draw under load and OC. I think this is more like the regular power draw plus a little more.
