This is what the English national leagues look like every year. Just look at Wrexham and Notts County breaking records with 100+ points each and Notts County still had to play playoffs to go up.

Every league should have 3 promotion spots though, even if 2 of them play playoffs. Seeing only one looks bizarre to me.

Leagues with 1 promotion spot are mostly regional leagues that promote into a national league. What are you going to do, relegate 12 teams each year from the league above?

How do those leagues work if the higher league has an imbalanced proportion of regions? i.e. Region A has 3 teams relegated from the higher league, but they're only promoting 1. Is their regional league just bigger the next season?

I think in this specific scenario (vanarama national), it could do with more promotion spots, and league two with more relegation. The gap between the top vnl sides and league 2 isnt that drastic, but only two teams go up and two down. There should at least be two automatic promotion spots plus a playoffs in my opinion.

Hardly - Notts County would have been the highest ever points tally if not for Wrexham, who were a massive outlier in terms of being bankrolled by wealthy, famous owners who seemed to have the humility and sense to capitalise on that advantage.

It tends to be uncompetitive in the National League when a bigger club gets relegated and has the might to steamroll the league. Luton won it by a mile because they were too good for the league. Chesterfield may very well do the same this season.

But seasons like last season don’t happen every year. When Stockport won the league it was very close almost to the end.

Ignoring notts are also bankrolled, but not high profile

Imagine putting up historic point totals two separate seasons and missing winning the top league by one point both times

Don't forget one of those seasons was one loss away from an undefeated season and that loss was by 11 millimeters to the team that finished 1 point higher than us in the table.

I was so pissed off, all those goddamned draws finished us. I was so sure it would never happen again, sigh...

The heart bleeds.

And now imagine the team you lost to was charged with 116 charges of financial doping and other charges ... And they'll never see justice:(

Their first team is actually midtable team in the highest tier of Norway

They should have won 25 games then with a better goal difference, are they stupid?
