If they want people to get married and have kids so bad, they probably ought to stop making it such a nightmare for people after the fact

Honestly it's smarter not to. Why get the law involved in your intimate relationships. I know there are some benefits (I'm married) but generally not worth it for anyone but the divorce lawyers.
