Is fast food in America actually cheap or does this come from people who don't know how to cook with cheap ingredients and compare it to microwave dinners and such?
50/50.
Some of the value menu items are good deals, like little sliders or burritos for $1-2. But for the most part, fast food is about as expensive as a "regular" restaurant these days if you actually get like a full meal.
In and out animal style. The fries leave something to be desired but the burgers are exceptional for their price.
