try hosting an apng, webp, webm, or something. newer formats that are less popular but hopefully have better compression and still hopefully supported by lemmy.

AFAIK this is actually what most sites do internally (converting it into a webp or mp4 or whatever). Discord does this too, it's just not as hidden on this Lemmy instance.

I now tried linking a gif hosted somewhere else, works better but still has some hiccups.
