why not oppose US colonialism and support Puerto Rican independence instead of statehood?

Never happen. If it got enough support from the people, it would make it to the supreme court and be blocked

Puerto rico should be finally freed from the the chains of the united states. Only the white man is free in the US and seems like this still holds true.
