I noticed this on my Pixel Fold today. It took several reconnects and turning my car on and off at the signals to get it to connect.

I just had this issue yesterday with my Pixel 4a. I tired rebooting the car and phone without success. Luckily my wife plugged in her Pixel 5 and that worked.
Previous to yesterday, it's been solid.
Have you tried some of the proposed workarounds here: https://www.androidpolice.com/google-pixel-owners-report-android-auto-connection-issues/, namely toggling Bluetooth off/on and checking your USB cable?

I don't use Android Auto but if it was updated yesterday then maybe you could try downgrading it?
Thanks! BTW, after trying a few things, what finally worked was removing the Pixel 4a from the car AA and Bluetooth menus and then readding it.

It's been so unreliable lately especially when using Waze. Plus reporting via voice on Waze hasn't been working for ages. Add the intermittent disconnections and I'm tempted to buy a cheap iPhone for Carplay when driving
I've been having intermittent connectivity issues, it typically requires that I restart my p6p to resolve. For whatever reason there are times that AA just won't connect properly... Or at all
