Remember... 'independant' is not local...it's just Loblaws.
Loblaws is out of control
A sub devoted to highlighting the ridiculous cost of living in Canada right now. We’d like to thank our corporate overlord Galen Weston Jr. of Loblaws for continually raising grocery prices so he can get a big fat bonus cheque every year while the rest of Canadians struggle to make ends meet.
Thank you for highlighting this. When loblaws has 27% market share in this country it's tough keeping track of all the aliases.
The linked to resource should be for "independent" grocers in the generic use of the term in a business context, ie, non-corporate. The resource was setup specifically for the loblaws boycott, so I'm pretty confident there are no loblaws-owned stores on it.
As @FiveMacs helpfully points out though, loblaws does operate a store called "Independent" that is not as advertised. From wiki:
Your Independent Grocer (YIG), known colloquially as "Independent" or "Yours" is a supermarket chain in Canada with more than 100 locations. It has stores in every province and territory except Manitoba, Nunavut, and Quebec. It is a unit of National Grocers, itself a unit of Loblaw Companies Limited.
