Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

What's the deal with DE? More and more are getting released (which is good) but I thought the other DE dev stopped and got focused on main ones: xfce, gnome, kde..
CDE always makes me feel nostalgic for 2002/2003 when I spent my intern year working for Sun using an Ultra 5 machine with 8 Mb RAM, 6 virtual desktops and soooo many terminal windows. It was my first introduction to Unix and lead me to linux in the end.
