Hello Danes! (:

I'm a young Portuguese who loves Denmark very much and I have the ambition to visit Denmark one day (maybe even live there).

I'd love to know what Danes think about Portugal and the Portuguese. Both good and bad haha So I'd appreciate your participation!

Obrigado! (:

Edit: By the way, if you have any questions about Portugal or the Portuguese, feel free to ask 😁

I know a lot of online marketing nomads that have their base in Portugal.

And it seems that digital nomads in general are not people that the portuguese value :-)

Could make sense because they might be stealing your jobs in a way.

since you're here, may aswell ask: what is up with not being able to purchase proper frankfurters in (atleast) Porto area?

What is the reason grocery stores just NEVER deliver everything one orders? its like 50% of stuff I buy from continente they just dont deliver

I have many more questions

That's never happened to me here in Portugal, but I don't live in Porto either.

You can ask all your questions, if I know I'll answer them (:

I kinda fell in love with Portuguese as fan of bossa nova and fado music, and once tried learning the language. Unfortunately I've forgotten most of it by now and I was nowhere near fluent anyway, but I still think it's a beautiful language (both the Brazilian and European variation). I've visited Portugal too and thought it was a charming place. I liked all the patterned tiles! My only negative, but kinda funny, experience was that a place close by our airbnb in a small town played extremely loud music until the early morning, which meant I didn't get a lot of sleep while I was there πŸ™ƒ

Can I ask, what made you interested in Denmark? 😊

I'm glad you liked it here 😁

I think most people here really don't have an opinion of Portugal or its people, positive or negative.

Apart from cultural stereotypes, which have little influence except on people who ars now very old, everything boils down to history, like Sweden and Denmark has had a lot of wars, so there's a lot of ribbing and pretend sibling rivalry because of that, and Germany and Italy tried to take over the entire world recently which led to Denmark getting occupied (and as that ended, Stalin occupied part of Denmark for some months).

So there are some after-effects of that, although it was a while ago.

But Portugal? There's no history between Denmark and Portugal, so you're basically just a country that's there. Probably a lot like Spain, with which Denmark also doesn't have any recent history.

I know a few Portuguese people and they are all cool. I don't have anything negative to say about them. Have never been to Portugal, though, but it seems like a pretty and vibrant country! :)

Honestly, I don't have much of an opinion on Portugal. I've never been there, but Im going to Madeira in Easter for a week, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Are there any local dishes you could recommend?

I think we have the same feelings towards all the Mediterranean countries; France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece. So no particular animosity towards any of them, just some general prejudice towards "Latinos". The prejudice might be that you're easy-going and "warm blooded" , nothing more than that.

May i ask why your opinion of Denmark is so high if you haven’t visited us yet? :)

I don’t really know much about Portugal or the portuguese except that it’s high on my bucket list.

I'm curious how one can love a country they haven't even visited. Don't fall in love with Denmark because of stories

Well first of all, I doubt anyone thinks much about Portugal. Why would we?

I was in Portugal for Eurovision. Everyone seemed mad about something. I've done a lot of traveling in Europa, but Portugal is the first country I've visited, where the primary business model of Uber drivers is to get close enough to you, without picking you up, to get you to cancel the ride and they get their commission. Shop staff seems angry. Restaurant staff seems angry. Everyone seems angry.

I hated it and am not coming back.

I'm sorry to hear that!

People usually here are happy, but a lot of things are going wrong in Portugal.

Like we call Sweden and Norway our brothers, most danes view Portugal as Spains sibling.

  • Climate: same-same.
  • Mentality: same-same.
  • Language: We do not belive both are latin languages! Spanish is fairly easy for most danes to learn but most would probably rather learn Japaneese than Portuguese... Even knowing average Spanish, Portuguese is gibberish.
  • History: (for the non-history-geek) same-same.
  • Living standards: same-same.

Personally the most positive thing I can think of, and the first that comes to mind, is the human approach on drug strategy.

Secondly I think of Port wine, which I love. (I've been to "Solar do Vinho do Porto" (Port wine institute in Lisboa)).

Thirdly I think of the begining of the movie Arrival where they explain the origin of the Portuguese language. (Which is the reason it doesn't sound as if it's related to Spanish).

I do think from internet memes calling Portugal an eastern european country, that you've had some harsh times regarding crime, economy and living standards in general, but I honestly haven't read that that much about it (I might do now our of curiosity) so it might just wrong.

Fellow Portuguese here on the sub.

Visited Copenhagen last year and loved it so much, even to the point of planning to move there this year, as soon as a good offer comes around.

Plus been learning Danish with Duolingo for over 6 months now and I must say it’s a very interesting experience - a lot of similarities with English in terms of words and phrasing but definitely a steep learning curve for some of the sounds that we don’t have natively in Portuguese.

Hope to explore more of Denmark in the future - the days I spent in CPH were really perfect and I fell in love with the city, country, and lifestyle! Tak!

I have a friend from Lisboa, so I'm very biased; I haven't visited Portugal - yet - but will probably this year; I've only heard great things about it, from a tourist perspective.
