I speak a bit Norwegian, so I can read danish, but I don't understand anything when they talk.

But I like the sound, it's a really nice language, not boring at all.

As someone learning the language, Im not exactly sure where in Danish that that joke is actually applicable.

This maps is a bit annoying. The oldest town in Denmark, Ribe, isn't on the map, but Esbjerg is.

Also I went to Norway and had an entire conversation about my shoes (I think) with a woman and just kept agreeing with her and giving her more information about shoes and weather in Danish and it was very similar experience.

I can only say that the English of the Swedes was more understandable to me than the English of the Danes. Otherwise the Danes are nice people and they cook smørrebrød

I just find it ironic people say this (often Swedish folk) cause if you tried to speak danish with a potato in your mouth you’d probably sound Swedish.

I remember hearing it when people talked about how bad our English accent is (politicians doing us dirty 😭) but never about danish itself//

In Iceland your Danish teacher will say that speaking Danish is just like speaking Icelandic with a potato in your mouth. I always thought this was an Icelandic thing.

But it is true. Phonetics are easier to imitate if you imagine that cavity of your mouth should be empty(potato there). Otherwise Danish pronunciation is not taught in Sprogskole across the country, which makes other to suggest miracle remedies to learn language. Since other resources are few, potato could go

My mandarin is A2, did it in Danish gymnasie. My Danish is B2

Don't worry, they say it less as you progress through the Danish language modules

Yeah it's super tiresome; potato/porridge in the mouth, heard it hundreds of times in Sweden. And the Swedish reddits are full of mostly very dull anti-denmark jokes.
