As a native person from Jutland, I'd like to know as well.

Easily recognizable, as images like this, is used for a lot of foreign articles about Denmark is the default placeholder.

But I have no idea why or what is supposed to be special about this particular area.

It's expensive and full of drunk Norwegians and Swedes. Also Hong Kong.

It's a hateful place to traverse, super busy and touristy.

Tourists think it looks quaint because it isn't a sea of glass and steel like they expect from a capital. That's pretty much it and it is therefore the default stock photo of Copenhagen/Denmark. Doesn't matter that it isn't what the rest of the city looks like.

Not that much in Denmark (and especially in Copenhagen) is as picturesque as this 🤷

No idea. It’s just like the statue of the little mermaid. Charming, historic, cute, sure. But national landmarks? Nah. Only to tourists. I guess the tour guides needed a stop around that area.

This is where you can get the most overpriced food and drinks in the entire city. Very special place.

Nothing, it's like Bryggen i Bergen; It looks incredible on pictures, but when you get there, it's more like "is this really it?".

When that is said; I'm a redneck from the countryside, and I actually enjoy going to Nyhavn, when I'm in Copenhagen :-)

I think this much sums it up. Once you get there it is a bit disappointing, however I expected nothing other than the colors of the houses, so I didn't care too much.

It's become sort of a meme that whenever Denmark is in international news (especially in the US), it's always either these buildings or a green field with windmills.

The location itself is called Nyhavn, and it's very central in Copenhagen so lots of turists pass by here if they're going to see e.g. the royal palace or the seat of government or the likes. So lots of people end up taking pictures here, which just adds further fuel to the fire.

Good opportunities to help people with selfie sticks get a quick swim. And if not then look at it for a bit and go take a trip on the waterbusboat and go to Refshaleøen. Famous for Denmarks most famous submachinebuilder and a lot of great street food
