It's something I've been putting off for years now but it seems like the release of the Wastelanders DLC changed a lot of people's minds but I'm wondering what the state of the game is in late 2023.

Does it feel like a cash grab at times? Where you are forced to relentlessly grind?

If it is worth playing; should I be aware of anything?

I’ve played it on and off since launch, it’s a mixed bag to be honest. The world/characters/quests are all pretty good for a Bethesda-era fallout game but the mechanics are closer to something like Destiny. Caps are hard to come by, gear constantly needs to be replaced as you level up, certain builds are wildly unbalanced, etc.

Things balance out more once you hit the level cap and can start collecting legendaries though, and the quality of life updates have been mostly good.

The grind can be a bit annoying at times but it’s not the worst I’ve ever experienced. I’d definitely recommend trying it if you can grab it on sale or play it during a free weekend.

I played a few years ago and it was pretty good, felt like a legit fallout game, I’m sure it’s better at this point, but it definitely felt like not paying for the subscription upgrades put you at a disadvantage.

It's not worth it. The core gameplay loop is basically pick a quest or thing to do, start making your way to the objective, get waylaid because your weapons broke, go farm fans in the office, go get tape from the adhesive shack, fix your weapon, head back towards the objective, and repeat.

The way to break the loop is to pay the Fallout First subscription which loads you up with gear and items like repair kits that can fix your weapons independent of the parts required.

It's absolutely not worth it, even with the update that added people, because the core gameplay loop sucks. You can't even hoard like a proper Bethesda RPG because your weight limit is garbage - another thing which can be remedied by paying the subscription.
