I downloaded the latest development release of GIMP today to check out the effects layers and it's awesome! Such a happy day for me to edit non-destructively in GIMP! Really looking forward to the stable release :)

I think its a nice achievement since there are only few (extremely few) devs are there and only handful support them.

I agree that it is a nice achievement, and I don't begrudge a small team for finishing things slowly...

but this feature wasn't even started until 2023, and by someone who wasn't on the team: https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/programs/2023/projects/CuwyAr75

I begrudge the deliberate choice to not prioritize this feature for 25 years.

That's fair enough - plenty of us have been calling for it for a long time. Hopefully they will feel the positivity in response to bringing it in and adjust their future priorities more in accordance with popular demand.
