Over the past week or so there has been a serious spam problem hitting mastodon and rest of the fediverse especially misskey over on the japanese side of things and the story behind it is absolutely wild.

The “serious spam problem” is a dispute between two groups of teenage shitheads in Japan, and if anything a wake-up call to improve anti-spam tooling before Russian cybercrime and/or Florida con artists wake up to the fediverse. It’s a shot over the bow, but less serious than that will inevitably follow.

Even more, the argument and the spam coordination originated on Discord, who did nothing to moderate it despite multiple reports.
