The Toronto Maple Leafs and star winger William Nylander are closing in on a new eight-year contract extension with an average annual value of around $11.5 million, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday.

The contract — which would begin next season — puts Nylander among the highest-paid forwards in the NHL.

This is probably the better link.

Friedman reported that it is likely just a matter of the Maple Leafs returning from San Jose tomorrow and when Nylander heads into the rink on Monday the paper work will get signed and the Leafs will have another eight years of William Nylander. The cap hit? It appears to be $11.5M per season, which you’ll note is a significantly higher than the $9.5M AAV that pundits thought was excessive over the summer.

I wonder if pundits knew in the summer that he was going to be even better than last season.

Even better somehow seems like an understatement still.

He’s one of the best players in the league at the moment!

He sure as fuck better not go Huberdeau once that ink dries though. That's what makes me so nervous about these north of 10 long term contracts. Especially when it involves a team that hasn't been out of the second round since the (early) nineties.
