Algebra existed long before Isaac Newton.
Pythagoras died a ‘thirdgin’ because of this. /s
I.e. you don’t even need algebra to use letters.
The funny part is that his theorem had already been discovered by an ancient civilization. I want to say the sumarians, but honestly that's the only one I'm familiar with, so I could be wrong.
I would not be surprised if someone thought of that >1000 years before him.
