Home automation is the residential extension of building automation.

It is automation of the home, housework or household activity.

Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.

I recently bought a house where everything is controlled by a Control4 system. I hate this because I cannot customize anything on my own and have to pay someone else to do it. I also have Alexa devices all over the house, but I have to pay $100 per year to use them with Control4 🤬🤬🤬

I know I can change the light switches to compatible ones, but I don't know how to do that with the motorized blackouts and the propane fireplace. Can someone please help me? I don't want to be a hostage to Control4!

I'm slowly replacing my Control4 system with DIY.

The hardest part for me has been finding a good controller that is powerful but doesn't require you to make HA a second full-time job (looking at you Home Assistant).

I'm hoping Samsung will come out with a good Matter controller soon.

As long as you are not doing AV distribution, you can pretty easily replace everything C4 does with DIY hardware.

I haven't touched or upgraded my HA for over 8 months and everything still works fine.
