On this day in 1917, white mobs in East St. Louis began indiscriminately killing black people, burning down homes with the families trapped inside, killing more than a hundred people in one of the bloodiest race riots of the 20th century.

Racial tensions had begun to increase in February, when 470 black workers were hired to replace white workers who had gone on strike against the Aluminum Ore Company. The use of all-white workforces and using non-white strikebreakers was an often used tactic to break working class solidarity.

At a city council meeting, angry white workers lodged formal complaints to the mayor of East St. Louis about black migration to the city. After the meeting ended, rumors of an attempted robbery of a white man by an armed black man began to circulate through the city.

In response, white mobs formed and rampaged through downtown, assaulting any black people they could find. The mobs also stopped trolleys and streetcars, pulling black passengers out and beating them on the streets and sidewalks.

On this day in 1917, the racial violence resumed at a fever pitch, with white mobs gunning down men, women, and children and burning down the homes of black families with them trapped inside. More than one hundred people were killed.

A year after the violence took place, a federal investigation of the conduct of the city government concluded that police officers fled the scenes of arson and murder, abandoning their posts and refusing to answer calls for help. Less than a dozen white people were sentenced to prison for crimes related to the riot.

Don't vote for president if you don't want to, I get it. It's stupid we only have 2 options, especially when both are in mental decline and show little to no ambition to reduce needless deaths and suffering. Both want to move this country towards fascism, and both are creating a worse world they won't have to live in for much longer.

To those who see this and think I'm saying both sides are the same, I'm not. I'll probably vote for Biden in November because he's driving towards the cliff at a slower speed and at least does the bare minimum for marginalized in this country. Also Trump said some pretty racist shit last night. Still, to those who don't want to support either candidate for the reasons above, that's valid.

The point I'm getting to is VOTE DOWN BALLOT. Vote for your congress person and your senator, both federal and state. Vote for your city council and your sheriff and whatever bills there are and everything else. That's where the fight still matters. That's where you can make the most difference. The social justice you want to see won't get near the white house until it's represented in the lower offices. It doesn't matter who the president is if you get enough decent people in a position to stand in their way.

Edit: I even said I was voting for Biden and the libs are still mad I think he sucks. Again, the point of this post is to get people to pay attention to the other things on their ballot. The president isn't as important or as powerful as we act like it is. And if you want better options, you have to support better options in races where they actually have a chance.

There is something so very, very exciting about seeing the words *politician, dancer, gun, Republican, *and *3 A.M. *in immediate proximity to each other. All the elements of a hilarious scandal — presuming the dancer is okay — right there in one convenient location. Our antenna goes up and our nose starts twitching like a coked-out rabbit. It is especially welcome in the midst of this dreary presidential election season, a flare gun firing off in the darkness. We call it the full Molly Ivins.

And with that, let us give a warm Wonkette welcome to one Kornelius “Neil” Friske (yes really), a 62-year-old hard-right Republican member of the Michigan state House of Representatives. Friske was arrested overnight Thursday in Lansing after police responded to a report of a man waving a gun and possibly shooting it. The details are still sketchy, but the cops apparently found reason to arrest Friske on the spot. He has not been formally charged yet, but the Lansing police “requested felony charges of sexual assault, assault, and a weapons-related offense against Friske.”
