All Things Tiki!

Tiki culture is a celebration of tropical escapism. It's a longing for the time when Pacific islands were still "exotic" locales that inspired Donn Beach and Trader Vic to create their own versions back home.

Pull up a chair or slide into a booth, sip your Mai Tai, and enjoy the decor while listening to the sounds of the Hukilau.

Tiki mugs. Tiki bars. Tiki cocktails. Aloha shirts. Luaus. Witco. Oceanic Arts. South Pacific culture. Trader Vic's. Don The Beachcomber. Martin Denny. Les Baxter. Mai Tais.

Things that aren't exactly tiki, but that we will allow, as long as they are tiki-ajacent: Hot rods, Pinups, Lowbrow Art (Rat Fink et al), Surf music, Science Fiction.

Not allowed: Jimmy Buffet, Margaritas, John Mayer, and Jimmy Buffet. (Have I mentioned that Jimmy Buffet is NOT allowed here? Ok, good. Just so we're clear.)

I recently learned of Molly Lewis, professional whistler, after she was featured on the "404 by LA Times" Instagram account. Fascinated by the idea of a professional whistler, I went and listened to some of her music and it definitely has an Exotica / Tiki vibe to it, especially 'Oceanic Feeling' and 'Balcony for Two', with slide guitar. Reminds me of the bird and monkey calls in Exotica.

A brief and mostly accurate history of the Mai Tai. I do take issue with his use of Agricole in the rum mix though.

Everyone is welcome here, to this chill paradise of leisure and relaxation. Except squares. No squares.

If you're curious about the history of Tiki culture, this video is a great introduction to the history and current status as of the early 2000's.
