Hello, I am thinking on which email provider to use as an alternative for Gmail.

I don't expect E2EE because I know nobody who uses either Tutanota or Proton Mail personally. I just want an alternative to Gmail, where I can message people I know who use Gmail securely.

EDIT: I have chosen my email provider as Proton Mail because I can send encrypted emails not only to people using Proton Mail, but to people who don't too, which I feel is better.

After this announcement, I am planning to reject meetings organised in zoom. But the problem is that it’s really good. So, is there any privacy friendly and viable alternatives to zoom? It does not have to be open source because I nearly tried all alternatives. Your experiences?

As a consequence of making the android and iPhone apps open source, they have been able to create a backend for Proton Drive on rclone beta.

This is cool for things that I have stored on a Linux machine but am I correct in feeling wary of using this from a security standpoint until Proton creates their own public API?

I'm comparing this to how Google requires you to authenticate yourself via OAuth for security vs how this is asking you to put in your Proton username and password and 2FA and it gets stored as a token in the config file.

I'm just a layman. Just trying to see if my understanding is correct and if there's other things to think about.

What do you think? Is there anything else to consider? Will you use this rclone backend to Proton for yourself? Am I too skeptical?

So i watch youtube a lot and i am now using invidious, i can subscribe to all my previous channels but what i am missing a lot is the recommendation algorithm, like it would show me different videos based on my interests etc and finding new content would be easy.

But this would also mean my data would be sold to companies.

Is there something similar for these youtube frontends which can recommend me stuff without sacrificing my privacy?

I'm looking for a paid cloud storage provider (like google drive, but not google drive) which is privacy minded, so with features like e2e encryption. I've been using Jottacloud to backup my large collection of photos. Jottacloud has been satisfactory, but I've heard other users complain of incomplete backups, where certain files are just missing. That makes me a little bit nervous, so I'm looking for something else. Does anyone of you know a good provider?

Are there any robot vacuums/mops that respect privacy; that don't map your house and phone home with the information?

Hi all, I'm working each device and overall network at a time, trying to learn and make my systems right. Make them all secure, private, properly configged, running good, and have freedom! Little restrictions ala using fdroid and Foss apps.

So far I have messed around with hypatia, and it always says its running but I don't exactly know of it is or what it should do. I just thought live malware protection sounded good.

I messed with tracker scanners and permissions tools such as warden, exodus, permissions pilot, and app manager and sure they show you all these issues, but I have no idea how to find these weird trackers, yet alone remove them. The permissions that are always deemed not say are always these weird ones in a weird format and I can never just go through the apps permissions and find them. So its all useless info for me. I can't seem to figure out how to use them.

Just hoping you all could recommend me good apps that worked for you encompassing all aspects of your phone, like mentioned. Proper configs, finding junk or spyware or apps that shouldn't be on my phone, protective measures, security measures, privacy measures, everything involved with keeping my phone happy and proper lol thanks for reading, hope you all could help. thanks

Edit: my lord I never specified which device lmao. I'm talking my galaxy s21 ultra android phone lol sorry

Hi For a local non for profit I am looking for an alternative for our Facebook group. An easy to use interface with a mobile app is a must. We need to have a place to post important updates and have small discussions/polls. Being able to create events would be a plus. Does anyone know a good alternative? Thanks in advance!

Currently I use Bitwarden for storing passwords and Aegis for 2fa. Is is okay to store recovery codes in my Bitwarden vault or I should store them in somewhere else like Tresorit, Dropbox with cryptomator.

As we all know, Ravio has been removed from the recommended multi-factor authentication apps for iOS on PrivacyGuides.

As I want to export all my TOTP codes out of Ravio ASAP, what apps are you migrating towards? I know a few were mentioned such as:

• Tofu • Ente • 2FAS • FreeOTP • Bitwarden TOTP + Yubikey

Hello I'm thinking about buying two Yubi Keys for my keepPassXc database but I just want to be sure they're worth it before I buy them since two would cost a fair chunk of money ($100), can anyone recommend them?

Have a good day, -Sebo

I currently use citymapper as my mapping app, as it is the best one to use where I live, but I am concerned about its privacy, and the alternatives do not support public transport. osmand technically does, but it is in beta and may be unreliable. what alternatives do I have?

I know that grapheneos has additional security measures compared to calyx, but does it include a similar app to datura firewall, which controls what apps are allowed network access, and I also like some of calyxos' other features like including aurora store and the panic button, grapheneos feels very barebones, but I have not used either of them yet, so I don't think I can make a definitive decision

I have never bought anything from Purism but I have considered it. Now though, I have my doubts.

Purism is a scam

Any thoughts? Have you dealt with that company or their products? Are they legit?

So back when I wasn't as privacy conscious as I am now, I started using Huawei Health as it came with a device. Now i've done that for about 6 years. Started with just counting my steps to eventually buying a Huawei fitness band for the integration and to have even more data in the app. It's a good band but... it's still all Huawei lol. So I've been thinking of switching.

However, all the health data i've gathered over that long period of time is in that app. Is there any way to transfer all that data to a more privacy focused service? And i mean ALL of it. From steps and amount of sleep to what my pulse was on a random day of a random year at a random time of said day.

Or do I have to abandon that data in the pursuit of privacy? And what would even be a more privacy focused solution?

It's the scratchpad script where you copy/paste into the about:config console. I just did it for the new v.115 release. I've done it previously but I don't have any set schedule. I guess 1x every six months (2x/year) seems sufficient but I wanted to see what others do.

With Google's proposed DRM / Web Environment Integrity project looming, will there be any change to PG's recommended browsers?

I'm sure it's on everyone's radar, but this seems like the absolute antithesis of privacy. There will be nothing private about anything chromium-based if this goes through...

I'm wondering if it isn't better to just whitelist cookies for the sites I need to log into and not bother with a password manager extension (keepasxc or bitwarden). I try to keep the number of extensions in my browser to a minimum to lower the attack surface. And why involve one more entity in the password story? Are there any problems with using the (1st party) cookies of sites I have signed up to and use to keep me signed in?

I am a newcomer to the space and want to know some stuff about the mentioned mobile browsers. Information on them seems a little sparse to me. I am aware of Brave, however on my current device it is very buggy and I do not like the company's reputation. I am aware of Firefox and it's derivatives and the benefit they bring against chrome's monopoly, however I believe that it's non existing sandboxing is an issue and would therefore like to exclude them for mobile use.

Bromite seems to have been abandoned as it's owner appears to be in a war zone (My heart goes out to you Carl!). As for this reason, Cromite was forked from Bromite by the main contributor to Bromite. This in itself raises several question for me:

  1. Is Cromite as good as Bromite was in it's golden age?
  2. Does Cromite have some catching up to do, before it becomes an alternative to other browsers again?
  3. Can the project be trusted under different ownership?
  4. Is it not listed on PrivacyGuides.org as it is "new", or as it's got an issue? I know that Bromite was once recommended.
  5. Would you yourself use or recommend Cromite? If yes/no, why so?

Also, how does Vanadium compare privacy wise? I know it's the bomb for security, however it's developer(s) did not specifically target privacy if I understood correctly. If I were to get GrapheneOS, I'd be happy to use it's stock browser.

What about a vm/cloud based browser? I have found very little about them, but could imagine they'd make it hard to track someone.

I have tried a few private keyboards, but none of them had the possibility to have one layout (Qwerty) with two correction languages (English and French). Any suggestions?
