With all the trouble Piped is going through now and most instances of Invidious capping at 720p, I have been trying to figure out how to use Freetube in a better way. Freetube can either be used to proxy videos through Invidious or to directly stream from Youtube.
I was wondering to what extent I am tracked when streaming from Youtube while using Freetube behind a VPN, while not being logged in.

I'm probably one of the few people still using a Pebble smart watch (still alive and kicking with Rebble!), and I've just gone through the app store and found a few cool apps that still work. Given that you have to give the Pebble android app quite a few permissions to be able to do its thing I'm now wondering if all the third-party apps can also access all those permissions. They're mostly little FOSS one-person projects so I can probably have a nose through the source myself to check for dodgy behaviour, but does anyone know what the risks are in general?

Has anyone taken a good look at this from a privacy standpoint? I love this in concept, but not sure if it would be privacy conscience to share credentials for all of these different apps.

This is very troubling, and I'm not even sure where to start. I recently received an email message from my ISP which alerted me to an incoming update. I didn't worry too much since this is obviously not the first update they've ever pushed through.

However, after this update, I noticed that my guest connections and some other things had changed / disappeared. I logged on to my router, and I immediately noticed my custom password had been reset to the default. No problem, I entered it.

At this point, I saw that all of my options were greyed out. I could change the password, which I did, but nothing else. I immediately called my ISP.

I was told that I would have to use their app now, so as much as I dislike using proprietary phone apps, I conceded and installed the app through the Play store.

However, the agent was not entirely honest with me. I still can't bifurcate my 2.4g and 5g connections, nor can I add or remove any guest connections. I immediately enabled "privacy mode" via the app, which purportedly prevents information from being collected by something called "HomePass," and I "Delete[d] Guard events" whatever the hell that means, but this seems really troubling. I can no longer access my modem/router settings via the normal interface, but have to use an Android app?

There is only one other ISP in my area. They have much worse/slower service, but should I switch, or is this just the "new normal"? Does what I'm describing even make sense? I'm not a tech expert, but I feel like I've self-taught myself how to navigate these settings, and learned from others in online forums, but now ... an Android app?

I'd appreciate any advice. I'd even be willing to purchase my own modem/router instead of using the one from my ISP, if that fixes this mess.

Edit 2: At first, I bought the Netgear AC1900, which seemed like a great deal. Turns out it was unusable without creating a netgear account, so I returned it in exchange for the TP-Link Archer AX1500, and it appears to be working! I got everything set up pretty close to the way it was before, except even better.

Once I save money, I'll also invest in a different modem and return this one to my ISP.

This was a big wake-up call for me in terms of privacy. I never listened to people saying not to use your ISP's equipment because I always trusted my ISP (it's not one of the big name ones). Never trust a company. Lesson learned. I appreciate all the responses I got! This community is great!

My domain is currently registered at porkbun, with the nameservers at cloudflare and hosting through codeberg pages. On the cloudflare end I've disabled all the security stuff and proxying is off for all the DNS records, though I still don't like using them (porkbun is horribly buggy, borderline unusable). Is there a better nameserver provider or is it okay to stick with cloudflare?

I use shelter to use apps that I need to be on for school, like WhatsApp (which I can't stop using unless I am out of school). I used RethinkDNS as both firewall and DNS because I am on a cheap android phone which doesn't really have custom ROM support, I have removed google apps as much as I can, and used RethinkDNS to block other stuff. Now I recently noticed that RethinkDNS even in lockdown mode does not run in the work profile created by shelter ? So I tried using the inbuilt android private dns with rethink but it doesnot work - since in lockdown mode all traffic is routed through the RethinkDNS. Is there a sollution for this ? I don't just wanna use nextdns through the Android private dns setup as it doesnot give the firewall capability.

After thinking about it for a long time I came to the conclusion that I'm OK with ads. They are not so annoying to me and as long as they are not popping out or really interfering forcefully I fine with them being there. As far as I can see ads are the de-facto fuel for a broad part of the content-creation monetization system which I consume heavily (mainly YouTube).

so, I want to configure my set-up so it won't block all the ads (especially not on YouTube). But, I do think that the amount tracking this days sites have is highly exaggerated and unnecessary (I worked on data-science so I can say that with a bit of confidence). Therefor I do want to block trackers and third-party cookies if possible.

Currently using Firefox both on my Macbook and my Android phone (with Duckduckgo as my search engine).

Is the above possible? Which extensions might be relevant?

Unfortunately, most people I know use WhatsApp for personal communications, as a result, I've had to start using it too. However, I'm unsure which is more privacy-oriented for desktop use: WhatsApp Web in a browser or the native application.

There are many interesting discussions about antitrust, companies being jerks and corporats making the world worse.

I think it would be cool to have a couple „rogue“ lawyers band together and start making class action law suits against corporations and states for using/enabling anti consumer/anti competitive practices.

I have never been asked to participate in such lawsuits so I assume its not being optimally presented online so far.

Feel free to correct my impression here.

TL;DR: I think we need more ways to fight against anti consumer/privacy stuff in courts all over the world.

Hi all, through my experience, the third party apps that are supposed to do this a pure trash. I mean true caller was pretty decent, but it was packed with ads and trackers of course and the overbearing permissions that constantly tries hijacking my set SMS and dialer apps.... I don't think using a third party app is the right solution.

I came across an internet protocol called NCID which is network caller ID, which sounds quite interesting, but strangely there is little documentation and virtually no online community discussion about this.

So I'm wondering what are some good caller ID options available? I'm a private person and I like knowing who is calling also, would like to stop spam. I'm sure there's a whole world dedicated to this such stuff, but I can't seem to find the solution. And tips or advice or anything would be great. Thanks
