In this video, we talk to Aiśwarya Kaitheri Kandoth (Aish) who tells us about the growth of free software in Kerala, India, and of her role in the take-up and evolution of GCompris in schools there.

Hey all, I'm trying to be a little more economical and reduce the amount of food I waste, and was wondering if there were any open-source apps that can track the best-before dates of the foods I buy so I can improve my meal-planning.

I saw that there's Best-Before on F-Droid, but the last release was in July 2022, and I was curious if there was something more actively maintained.

I just noticed that my HeliBoard icon in the list of apps has a green dot to the left of the name below the icon itself. I have no idea what it means -- it seems to be different form the privacy green dot you may get in the top notification area.

Also, I've noticed that when I type, not only do some things get underlined in red (I think it's for misspelling), but also in blue. Any idea what that means?

Thank you

Due to people complaining last time I posted about this: GNU Taler is a privacy preserving payment system, but not a crypto-currency.

The projects they want to make safer includes Linux, curl, sudo, among others.

Just found it and I think this will be interesting for this community.

Just wondering which library or technology does standard notes use for the spreadsheet feature.

Is something they developed by themself or is it something being reused from another repository.

Just curiosity because it works so well and wanted to see how have they implemented it.

With the release of Unicode 16.0 this September, I may finally be able to use my own language's script. But I am not sure if OSes will directly support the latest version of Unicode immediately. How long should I expect these changes to be available on my local OS?

With that being said, I would like to work on creating my own font, maybe also migrate a few corpuses from the wrong script to the original, new one, as well as work on transliteration.

All of this is impossible for a single person - but I would like to take it slowly. What would be a good place to start? Do I need to keep anything else in mind while starting on this journey?

Hey folks,

do you know of a heir to the infamous bibliogram-project or another privacy-frontend for Instagram?

Curious about both android and iOS because I want to know what to recommend to friends. I'm asking about Google Drive because that's what is simplest for my peers right now.

With Facebook adding AI directly into messenger, I have some people wanting to switch to Signal. However I'm not confident in my process for backups.

Right now I'm using FolderSync which is working well. The problem is deletion, where the deleted file sticks around in the trash for 30 days, eating up storage space until I manually delete it. Since the Signal backups can get quite large, the trashed backups are enough to put me over the limit.

I didn't try WhatsApp that long, but it had a built-in feature to backup to Google Drive. I don't need that level of simplicity, but something close would be nice.

Peer-to-peer file transfers in your browser Cooked up by Alex Kern & Neeraj Baid while eating Sliver @ UC Berkeley.

Using WebRTC, FilePizza eliminates the initial upload step required by other web-based file sharing services. When senders initialize a transfer, they receive a "tempalink" they can distribute to recipients. Upon visiting this link, recipients' browsers connect directly to the sender’s browser and may begin downloading the selected file. Because data is never stored in an intermediary server, the transfer is fast, private, and secure. (Your PC must be online while the recipient download the file(s), if you shutdown the PC or goes offline, the download also stops)

You can selfhost it or use the official instance

Is there a database of sorts for these things? It seems like there should be.

Open Source maintainers and developers have been warned about the continued wave of attacks aimed at project maintainers similar to those recently targeting the Linux xz data compression library, XZ Utils [linuxsecurity.com].

I'm looking for an audio app for learning tunes by ear. Ideally would have:

1- slow playback, without adjusting pitch.
2- loop selection - to play a segment of the audio over and over
3- pitch adjustment (some old recordings are out of tune)

Anyone have one they like? For android the closest I've found is Fossify music player, which offers feature 1.

For PC, audacity has all these features, but its pretty clunky to use.

Hi open source community!

This is a follow up to a previous post where I got a lot of really good feedback on this resume template. I've made some changes to the template that takes much of the feedback into account and I also added some new features that should make the template more useable for a wide variety of people.

If you have any further feedback please feel free to share!

To use this template on the typst web app, see here: https://typst.app/universe/package/modern-cv

Some screenshots of what the template looks like/can produce.

Hey there!

I find myself frequently downloading large files on my android phone from servers that aren't always the fastest. These downloads can range from audio and video files to zip and rar files.

I'm on the lookout for an app that will allow me to resume downloads that have failed, as well as choose where to save each file individually.

So far, I've only come across apps that have been discontinued.

Do you happen to know of any good, regularly updated apps that fit the bill?

Thanks so much for your help :)

Hello, I am looking for a FOSS frontend for simple DB app.

Use case:

  • Let's have a simple DB in MySQL
  • I want the user to be able to browse via views
  • Create new inserts via some forms

Does something like that exist?

EDIT: Thanks all for suggestions, looks like what I am looking for is just a regular web app however simple I might think it is, there is near 0% chance I can just grab something off the internet and use it in this case.

I was wondering if there are any FOSS UK focused news app (Android)?

Hello. I'm looking for a more private (for obicous reasons) and fast discord client for android, since the app is terrible and preforms terribly on my relatively old phone. I can't change to something like matrix/signal, since I can't convert other people.
