My intentions are to run windows server 2019 on a 4 core 16gb poweredge R230.

I would also 'like' to run a Ubuntu server instance or two for a few network appplications. I don't know the hardware limitations for hungry windows and if this is a good idea.

Looking for advice, also not sure how much hardware vmware eats up before allocating. Can I allocate all cores to multiple machines or will vmware say no?

I know it's only a 230 but that's all I have, thanks.

I don’t have any anti static bags, so I am trying to figure out a substitute that I might already have around the house.

I read mylar is Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate. Aren’t anti static bags made out of polyethylene?

Planning on buying a used Homelab setup.

What are things I need to check for? Any gotchas?

How can I make sure there are no security holes/vulnerabilities before I connect to the server from my personal workstation or home Internet?

Edit: For context, purchasing a used Dell Poweredge R730xd from someone.

Motherboard: SuperMicro H11DSi

CPU: 2x EPYC 7401

RAM: 128GB Antech DDR4 ECC

Motherboard DIMM population configuration A,C,E,G for both CPUs; see the documentation on page 31 for 7001 Series CPU)

Powersupply: Seasonic PX-750 Prime

Board has LEDs, power on and heartbeat is steady. Both Noctua heatsinks spin up and I can feel the temperature delta in the heatsink so the CPUs are heating up and receiving power no display. 7401s dont have integrated graphics so I got a R9370 GPU plugged in. It's not spinning but its probably in eco mode.

Brother and I are actively trying to troubleshoot this and his thought process is that its memory training. Any other troubleshooting suggestions before I tell my wife that I just blew a few grand on scrap? :)

So, some time ago I saw a post where washing machine used 4 GB per day. It inspired me to do an investigation if I could have something similar. I did some digging and put together Prometheus exporter to put data to my network monitor stack.

Peaks from one machine are actually speed tests ran each hour.

Unfortunately, this solution is limited to MikroTik routers only. Exporter, instruction how to put it together, along with exemplary Grafana/Prometheus stack are available on GitHub: . Feel free to roast my repo, or use it as it is.

Cheers!

I am trying to set up a K3s cluster in my homelab, but running into issues.

I have mostly based my playbook on this repo Now I admit, that despite watching a bunch of videos I am very much noobish in this and only partially understand what is going on.

My cluster seems to be up, vip adrress is pingable, when logging into one of the masters i can see all the nodes. The issue comes when i try to manage my nodes outside of the cluster or try to install something via helm - i am getting a TLS verification error.

molnart@k3s-01-master:~$ kubectl get nodes

I'd like to trobleshoot this, but I am lost where to look. Any help is appreciated.

I'm trying to get an apache server running, but I can't even set up Ubuntu server because I can't type anything in the terminal. Things like ctrl + alt + F# work, but I can't actually type. I tried using a graphical installer and that worked, both keyboard and mouse, but this is meant to be a server so having a graphical environment isn't really that optimal. I'm not sure if ESXi is to blame, or if it's Linux. This issue persists on both Ubuntu and Debian.

It should be noted that I am connected to my computer through Chrome Remote Desktop. The desktop is connected to my server. I thought that was the issue at first, but I texted someone in my house to try typing onto a terminal, with no results. I saw the cursor blinking in reaction as they typed into the username prompt, but nothing actually came up. I don't think the username prompt has text that's meant to be hidden when typed into, so I think this means it's not Chrome Remote Desktop doing this.

If any extra info is needed, I am happy to supply it. Thanks :)

Over the last two years I've been building up my little home networking collection, and have been starting to think if its time to move to a rack mounted cabinet to hold everything in an organized spot. Currently, I have

  • Main Gaming PC
  • Work PC
  • Synology NAS
  • ISP modem
  • Wifi Router
  • unmonitored switch
  • Phillips Hue Controller

So I'd at least need the following

  • Rack
  • Case for Main PC
  • Case for Work PC
  • Power Strip
  • A rack shelf or two for my non-racked equipment.

Currently, my main PC sits under my desk, and my NAS and work pc are tucked away in my media cabinet. ( not the best for cooling, but its at least out of sight as I have very little open floor space)

I am worried about how much space it would take up, but it would be nice to have everything in one place, with proper cooling.

I'm wondering if there is anything else I should consider, or if its even worth doing since all this stuff adds up quick. ( easily looking at $1000 for everything I would need )

So the closet has poor ventilation and it's open at the top, because that's how I drop ethernet cables and access the attic. This room stays the temperature of the attic as a result.

I have 5 ethernet (female caps) and 1 coaxial going into the room currently. I don't expect to add more than 2-3 more ethernet lines. My handyman put this access panel in, but it doesn't feel particularly useful. I want a patch panel for the female lines in the back, so I can keep the rooms organized.

What would you do to fix this setup? The modem, wifi, network switch, router, UPS will stay in here. I'll probably move the server out of the closet because it gets hot in this room. This is a ubiquiti switch to get an idea for size of the closet. I have 3 2x4s on the back wall to mount to

I had the chance to get an sg350p cisco for cheap and someone told me it's not a real cisco switch so look for something else (possibly this switch lacks features that you must learn?) to learn on. Any clues to what they might have meant..os features? Just looking for something to practice ccna type stuff and and homelab on.

I've previously shared details about my Dell R730XD server setup, utilizing vertical upside-down mounts, and it's been functioning superbly. However, the primary goal was to transfer my old home media and labs to this setup. Now that everything is configured, I find myself contemplating the optimal allocation of drive space. I'd appreciate hearing opinions and insights from this group...

First and foremost,.... I DO NOT PLAN ON USING ANY HOST OS SUCH AS UNRAID, LINUX OR PROXMOX, ETC so please don't mention it...this is running Windows Server 2022 Datacenter on two 1TB SSD drives (RAID 1) in the Flex-Bay.

The server has 26 cores and 256 GB of RAM. I also have 16 1.2TB SATA drives in the front for Data and media.

I do need to run Hyper-V for my Lab and was thinking Docker for my Plex server and other plex services such as Radarr, Sonarr, etc.

Here is what I have so far:

  • I am using Storage Spaces to manage disks
  • Allocated 5 disks in storagepool1 for data and Lab.
  • Allocated 11 disks in storagepool2 for media (I will be transferring 6TB from legacy server)

What I can't decide:

  • What RAID configuration should for LAB volume? I'm thinking RAID 0. I'm not interested in recovery for this and really would like the best performance.
  • Should I use thick or thin provisioning for lab volume? I was thinking of splitting this pool into data and lab and make data as thin provisioning on parity and LAB/HYPERV on thick on RAID 0.
  • What RAID configuration should for MEDIA volume? I read that RAID 5 is good for media streaming but not the best on performance...is it that noticeable?
  • Should I use thick or thin provisioning for Media volume?

What I don't know:

  • I read that to install Plex in docker running on Windows, I need to deploy a Linux VM within Hyper-V then run Docker in that. Is this correct? My concern is the attaching the raw disks to that VM vs managing them within the host.
  • Does that mean I would need install all the other media management apps in that same VM within its docker? That would mean the VM would need more cores and ram.
  • Has anyone used docker in Windows for Plex? is it worth the squeeze?
  • Would it be better to create a NFS file share from host and then have Plex to use that?

Thanks!

I have (3) 5SC1500 UPS backup power supplies, 2 of them about 7 years old, and one about 3 years old. The 7 year old ones are going into AVR mode after a few minutes from startup, and both have the same type of issue. The input voltage is a steady 125v, while the output voltage says it's around 102v to 105v. My newer UPS shows 125v in and 125v out. So there's something inside these old UPS's that is bringing down the voltage somehow.

My question is, would running the old ones kill itself faster if it's always in AVR mode? Should I see if I can get it serviced? New ones are about $500.

From my tests, the old ones still runs my devices and performs all of it's battery to mainline power switching just fine.

Hello everyone, I'm starting my first homelab on an old pc with I5 6th gen (4 cores, 4 threads), 32GB RAM and an SSD boot drive.

My goal is to run HASS, AdGuard or PiHole, Lidarr, NextCloud (linked to an external synology nas), password locker and maybe 1/2 VM for test usage. I'm not an expert in servers but know my fair share, I'm just a bit overflooded by all the OS possibilities and I'm having a hard time figuring out what's the best solution according to my limited RAM (max capacity).

  1. Should I get an hypervisor? If yes, how can I split RAM for these usages?
  2. Should I run everything in docker from a single Debian distro?

I’m looking to host some servers for friends which mostly consist of Minecraft, Palworld, Valheim and 7 Days to Die.

However, I’m thinking do I buy one server (and if so what should I strive for spec wise) or just buy some cheap mini-PCs with 16gb of ram to host these? EliteDesks are going around $100-200 per device.

To start I have an extremely basic understanding of how networking works. I did take classes back in college but I did not retain all the information, so I may have some more learning to do on this subject. As the title suggest I am having difficulty with speeds, and I dont quite understand the issue. I pay for a 1000mbps plan through Spectrum. When I connect my PC directly to the modem I speed test at around 600mbps down which I am very happy with. Connect my PC to pfsense router or any other router I own I only receive about 250-300mbps. Is this normal? Both speed test are ran with the same cat 5e ethernet, but I have tested with a cat6 cable with no differences. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Just connected my server directly to the modem using cat5e ethernet cable. When using the mobo NIC I achieved a speed of 850 mbps, but when I changed that cable to the dual NICs port I only recieved 500mbps ish.

Good morning, great and knowledgeable homelab gods. I am trying to consolidate my setup and would like to combine machines in my Proxmox cluster to save power.

I have an R730xd SFF with 2x E5-2697v4, and an R420 w/ 2x E5-2430v1. The 730 is being filled out with SAS & U.2 SSDs as money allows to serve as fast photo/video storage (TrueNas Scale) and also runs 10-15 VMs. The 420 is running 4x 16TB SAS drives as normal NAS storage (also TN Scale under Proxmox).

  1. I would like to put a LFF mid-bay kit in the SFF, but I do not know if it will fit. They are only ever discussed in the context of LFF machines. I would love your thoughts on whether this is possible or feasible.
  2. My goal would be to migrate the 420's drives into it and either shut the 420 down or turn it into an off-site backup machine. I tried to add the 730's 3.5" drives to an external SC200 first, which worked great but was louder and used more power than the R420.
  3. I am concerned the 2697s would run a little hot with the low-profile heat sinks and drives directly above. I am considering migrating to 2x E5-2650L v4s instead and welcome the wisdom of the group on that. I am also interested in how well the drives will hold up, or whether that is too hot a location for their duraibilty.

The 730 also has two SSDs in the rear flex bay as a pair of mirrored boot drives, if that matters at all in the equation.

Thank you!

I'm at my wit's end and have no idea how I can debug this issue any further. I have a home setup that involves the following:

  • a Raspberry Pi with home assistant and the Adguard plugin with DHCP for IPv4
    • Core 2024.1.5
    • Supervisor 2023.12.1
    • Operating System 11.4
    • Frontend 20240104.0
    • Adguard plugin 5.0.2
  • my ISP's (Ziggo) default router (IPv4 and IPv6) with its IPv6 DHCP with DNS set to the Pi's IPv6.
  • a laptop doing duty as a proxmox server.

All devices have been assigned static IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. I noticed that my Proxmox laptop wasn't resolving my Adguard DNS rewrites while my workstation was. I've tried both with the GUI and the free form rewrites rules.

DNS Rewrites in Adguard GUI

I started to dig into it further. From my workstation I get a successful reply:

Now when I try to do the same on my proxmox machine:

dig ..house

; <<>> DiG 9.16.33-Debian <<>> ..house
;; global options: +cmd
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Now the strange part is that when I do the same query for the AAAA record I get a reply from the expected nameserver:

dig ..house AAAA

; <<>> DiG 9.16.33-Debian <<>> ..house AAAA
;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:

When I look at the query logs both queries successfully reach the nameserver and are replied to appropriately with no errors:

I'm completely at a loss and have already lost days trying to debug this issue. Who can help me out?

Edit: there's no visible error logs in the HA Pi's Adguard addon.

Hey guys, I have a project to build up a device which does face detection and streams the face image/s to an API server. The device also needs to support 780p display so once the user shows his face, a preview would be displayed with some overlay drawings on the detected face and it shouldnt be laggy as hell, so opengl support is needed. I am looking for the cheapest hardware (SoC's) that would suffice my needs. It needs:

  • some GPU to support opengl (through OpenCV)

  • at least 1 GB RAM

  • 2xCSI interfaces to connect two camers or, 1xCSI and 1xUSB3

The two cameras are needed to detect human liveness (simulating 3D vision).

I am wondering if any of you have done something similar and can advise what hardware/SoC can be used to achieve it? I am open for any custom hardware design schemes as well if there is nothing OOB.
