About us

An open, user owned community dedicated to the philosophy of minimalism and the minimalist way of life. All types of posts are allowed, as long as they are relevant to the topic of minimalism.

Rules

1. Be honest with yourself and others. The goal is to develop yourself personally and as a community. Seriously, if you’re not honest with yourself and pretend to be someone else, you’re not going anywhere. The first step to progression is acceptance, isn’t it?

2. Be polite to others and respects each others opinions.Your freedom ends where somebody else's begins. Remember that there are people that may see things differently than you.

3. Keep it theme-oriented, up to date and relevant. In general, all types of contributions are allowed, but the relevance to this community must always be evident and presented openly by the contributor. Posts that do not meet these requirements will be removed after a public warning.

4. Use self-moderation measures first before reporting. This community is fundamentally built upon freedom of speech. Since everyone understands minimalism differently and we do not want to exclude any kind of content a priori, we appeal to the individual users to block/mute posts or users who do not meet their requirements. Please bear this in mind when filing a report

MODERATORS

Hey all,

This is the place where you can share your ideas, improvements, whishes or general feedback regarding this community.

Update 1

the people here have agreed to dedicate this community to the general discussion of minimalism.

I'm trying to make everything as transparent and democratic as possible so you can really harness the freedom of the decentralized internet with its main strength: the community.

Hello,

I would suggest to have two communities

  • one with the minimalist aesthetic
  • one for the minimalist lifestyle

Those contents are quite different, and if there is an overlap people can always subscribe to both.

I don't know how to name them to avoid confusion though.

I see your point, so let me explain my thoughts behind the creation of this community.

I created it as an open space, an agora, for general discussions about minimalism. I have been careful not to dictate a style to the community, as I see the added value and relevance in both types of topics. I have come to the conclusion that it is the focus that distinguishes a simple picture post from an enriching contribution.

My suggestion would therefore be to say that pictures may not be posted alone but always with a text explaining why the user has posted this picture and why he thinks it is interesting/relevant. In addition, flairs, which are supposedly coming soon, could help to further differentiate between the types of post and perhaps even filter them.

I was thinking minimalist art should be its own thing. Aesthetics is more nuanced and can certainly be included with the lifestyle.

Right, so you are making the distinction between art and aesthetics. Where would you draw the line though? Isn't it all about exchanging views over minimalist topics? I personally can imagine somebody using a piece of art to underpin a certain sentiment or a thought. However it shouldn't be a simple image post but rather an exposé that may also contain an image.

In my humble opinion we should not focus on the style or type of content posted but rather on the message itself and the value it adds to the discussion. It may even be one sentence but if it is good and makes you think I see no necessity in banning it. I stand for a holistic and general approach that addresses all types of content equally. Like this we can guarantee that any type of content posted here stays constructive and interesting.

So my proposal is:

  • This community - for the lifestyle and some general discussions about the spirit of minimalism
  • An art community - for the discussions about the art styles themself

great, I'll try to add this to the community description.

Thank you for being transparent and up to the task of moderating!!

I vote for this community to be about minimalism lifestyle, but would let people post about the aesthetics too in the beginning (as you said in another thread) until this sub grows. Then if it becomes too much we could branch aesthetics to another community.

I don't know if Lemmy supports tags, but something like [Aesthetics] and [Lifestyle] would be cool.

Just my thoughts.

That's what I thought either. Everyone must decide for themselves how he/she/it interprets minimalism. However, this reference must be made clear as a matter of urgency so that as many people as possible can understand this train of thought.

I also prefer user-based moderation in particular. Anyone can block users who annoy them or seem posting unimportant things. Moderators should only have to intervene in emergencies. But I will write a more detailed post on this.

I would want to see a bigger mod team. 1-2 person mod teams rarely go well, and there's too much influence from each person. The best mod teams tend to consist of 5-6 people.

In general, I would also prefer a discussion forum. Pictures and news articles have their place occasionally, especially if they're conducive to discussion, but in general discussion based posts are (in my personal opinion) preferable for this type of community, and the previous sub was very much oriented around that.

As the community grows, megathreads might be of value - a big issue with the previous sub was that a lot of longtime users would just leave because new users would just keep posting the same questions over and over again, so there wasn't a lot of retention, which is too bad - it's nice to have a mix of new and more seasoned users.

Sure anyone who wants to mod is really welcome.

I can see, of course, that discussion threads are very important for a forum that is particularly characterised by exchange with other people and active interaction. But I see no fundamental contradiction to the additional posting of pictures and other material. However, as I have tried to make clear in the rules, posts may not simply be sent in without context, but the relevance must always be obvious, if necessary with an explanation. This ensures a discussion that can also refer to different material and hopefully benefit from it.

Megathreads are a great idea for the future. Currently the community is too small for it in my opinion. As far as the redundancy of questions is concerned, I haven't thought too much about it. Maybe I should add this to the rules.

I'd be happy to mod. Do you have an application form? To give you a general idea, I've moderated subs before, but I don't have any 1m+ mod experience.

Also, if anyone wants to mod other backpacking/minimalism related subs please hmu! I'd love to set some up but I can't moderate multiple subs by myself, so h e l p.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I think in the beginning, as long as we arent that big its ok to not have something like an application form. Currently our goal is to populate tgis sub by starting posting meaningful info and spreading the word so that people can find us.

Hey, I made you a mod. But please remember that this place is relying on the decisions of the users. Please dont use your mod tag to post personal things and behold from any from any attempt to use your mod rights to pursue personal interests or opinions. This is an adult community and users do not need to be patronised. Thank you for the cooperation.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Alright....

Do you have a mod gc or something?

[–] [email protected] -3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

not really. Didnt have time. But please feel free to make some propositions. At the moment this community is rather small so until the 1 of july we can sortthings out.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've always run mod chats on discord, so that would be my suggestion. Open to others though.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sorry but I wont be a part of it then. I dont have discord and have serious concerns about using it. I can setup a matix, xmpp, irc, or simplex group chat tho.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

OK, well what does @miked use?

[–] [email protected] -1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Personally I would go with matrix: It's similar to discord but decentralized and open source.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

OK, well let's see what Mike thinks.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Matrix is fine. I haven't used it before but can figure it out.
