What a disingenuous subject title period TikTok is spending 1.3 billion to get European data centers to comply with the law. That's not a Dodge

If you take China's word that the offices in China won't be able to access the Euro servers...

Agreed. They will absolutely do that. But if the politicians are unhappy about that, they should change the wording of the law. Companies complying with the law as written is legal and not a dodge. So I think the article title is still sensationalist

also, it's either that or fold. why would a company, in a capitalist economy, decide to fold? obviously they're going to make the effort to comply to remain in business.

While TikTok has spent significant time and effort building up staff in its operating countries to localize the app, ByteDance’s management remains in China. Although the company claims no identifying data travels to its headquarters in Beijing, there are concerns among China skeptics that the country’s telecoms and national security laws would mean it would have to snoop on users if asked

I mean, some tankie in another thread claims China is a communist country that controls all Chinese companies, can't have it both ways

It's true. But if the politicians are unhappy if that situation, they should have written their law differently. TikTok complying with the law as written is legal

That's a data protection law from the EU. I suspect there's other security legislation at either EU or member state level that would preclude data being sent for spying purposes

Isn't that something pretty standard ? Like the same thing happen with facebook/google/Yandex or even reddit ? Technically even feddit.de would have to cooperate with German authority when asked.

I agree that you can trust the German government way more than China (and most likely way more than any other European government) but the issue of user data being used for massive espionage isn't a problem specific to Tik Tok.
