Easynews Web Search (zerobytes.monster)

For the last few weeks whenever I try to use the web search, I get "Our search servers are under heavy load. Please try again later." I have used Easynews since around 2006 and this was always an occasional thing. But it is almost constant at the moment. Am I the only one?

Thanks

Noticing most new posts aren't rared. Is raring posts not a thing anymore? Just curious what's the proper posting etiquette.

Hi, I am located in the U.S. and got an AT&T fiber connection of 1gbps, however, eweka download speeds do not go over 5mb/s. I will get 20mb/s somedays but never more than that. I was getting 100mb/s from frugal but stopped it due to way too many incomplete packages. Eweka is slow but has never failed on me so I'm happy with it. I am using port 443 and 50 connections, I have tried playing with the connections but it does not make a difference ... Any help will be appreciated.

Recently, I noticed my NZB downloads had slowed dramatically. I had changed no settings in my NEWSREADER APP.

When I reconnect through a VPN (which usually slightly slows downloads) NZB downloads returned to the former (much faster) speeds.

Seems odd, right? Anyone have any input?

Just wondering when the general consensus is on indexer comparisons - how would the two unnamed indexers compare to drunk slug for content and retention is for example.

Like so many of you, I’m looking back into Usenet after many years away. I’ve been gone over 10 years, and I’ve forgotten a lot lol. I’m trying to go auto download for shows I want mainly. And just to be able to browse through groups and find things I might like in TV, movies, books, etc. I currently use a Mac this time around, which is definitely limiting what software I can use to accomplish this. Can anyone with a current Mac setup please let me know what combo of client, server, and other software you are using to accomplish this? Thanks!

I've got a friend who has been a subscriber with Usetnet.Farm since they first appeared on the scene. He used to say good things about them, but of late has found that if he isn't looking for something that just appeared in the last couple days or less, that Usenet.Farm is mostly useless. What has been your experience? Is it worth subscribing to?

Hi!

I want to know how to get ONE nzb for this scenario:

Main dir X

inside X we have 2 files & 2 subfolders

inside the subfolders we have 5 files

Currently I use subdirs = keep # upload all files in sub-directories (with recursion)

But I get separate nzbs for each subfolder file and each file in X

Am I doing something wrong or the wrong config?

I am not raring anything.

Thanks

Visiting my favorite indexer for the first time in many months, I was directed to a new login page touting site-we-don't-speak-of 2.0. This is a site that I've poured donations into over the years, yet I was never smart enough to have a real email tied to it. The 2.0 version requests an email at login, as opposed to the username of the old 1.0 site. Is anyone aware of how to potentially access the site with my previous login? Am I at a complete loss? This would be devastating to me, though I recognize my own faults here. Thanks in advance.

I’m struggling to acquire all iso’s in a series I’ve got two indexers and one provider. Should I look for a third indexer or a second provider to try and find the missing ISO’s? New to usenet looking forward to hearing how you all manage this issue.

Followup to my post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/comments/1i9w7ou/usenet_for_discussions_in_2025/

I've gotten an Eternal September account now and actually have it up and running. My initial feeling is a bit … sad … honestly. I checked out some of the old **alt.fan.*** groups I was a member of 25 years ago. I didn't expect them to be active, but I was hoping the discussions might be archived. (Then again, maybe it's better I can't see what 13-year-old me was saying.)

As it is, I'm going to set aside some time to actually browse through the list of active groups and look for some to join. I've already found a few that I'm not surprised are still active -- Apple II and Ham Radio fans would absolutely never leave Usenet. :)

Thanks again for all the advice helping me get started.

Can anyone confirm that they are able to send out posts on gignews and see them in the group that they are posting to? Please check now.

Over the past few days first started seeing no 240 response codes and post would not even be accepted – no response code at all - now for the past several hours seen 240 response codes, but the outgoing post does not appear in any of the groups that it was posted to

The mother site (.nl) still shows the link to beta one so was wondoring if it is accessible to anyone else here, cause it's been down for me since a few days.

Does anybody use this indexer anymore? I got an invite. Initially quite impressed by the layout but then looked at features being locked behind donations.

The donations themselves are very expensive. There is a forum but this is locked behind donations. So I contribute the bare minimum $3 to see if the forums are active.

Rather disappointing, the site forums are pretty dead. There was some recent posts but these were December 2024 and basically a guy scamming for invite trading to the most desirable trackers. The guy that runs it is known as King Cat and was last online in June 2024.

So my question is. Does anybody actually use this indexer? How is it still online after all this time?

Ever since retention went from years to minutes sometime around the middle of 2012 I stopped using Usenet and went to torrents. Has anything changed? What's the good setup nowadays?

Certain groups I pull from typically have many hundreds of posts a day and recently the volume has fallen off to nearly zero... or so it appears on nzbgeek.

Is anybody aware of problems with nzbgeek or a significant fall off in usenet volume in the last week or two?

Edit: in the old days of usenet there used to be sites that tracked daily volume on various groups. I can't find any sites like this anymore. Do they exist?

Never noticed this before until a few days ago. Various times during the day I’m getting about 6MB/s other times I’m at my full isp bandwidth of 100MB/s

Very sorry, but I've now decided I need to block access to https://newsgrouper.org.uk from the UK, starting 16th March. This is because I find it impractical to meet the requirements of the UK's Online Safety Act, which comes into effect then. See https://www.ofcom.org.uk/online-safety and https://onlinesafetyact.co.uk

I've done a fair bit more homework on this, reading some of the guidance, but not all the thousands of pages that Ofcom has produced, and following their online seminars. Unfortunately very many aspects remain vague, and requests to Ofcom to provide clearer guidelines get answers like "It depends on your circumstances", "We can't advise individual sites", "You have to make the judgement", etc..

I'm afraid my conclusion is that trying to comply with the OSA is just too much effort. It's not just the initial risk assessments and policy/system changes. It's also that one is then required to respond to any reports that come in and judge whether that content is really illegal. You are required to remove anything that is illegal under a long list of categories, but also to protect users' right to freedom of speech. It's easy to think of cases where this balance could be very tricky. I simply don't want to get into the business of having to police other people's speech.

Ofcom have stated unequivocally that geo-blocking the UK will put a site outside the scope of the Act. So I put up a simple survey on the newsgrouper site, this appeared for UK users only, and I let it run for two weeks. There was just one question and a space for comments. I got 11 responses, as follows:

How would a UK block affect you? Answers
1: Not Concerned, I can follow Usenet by other means. 1
2: An Annoyance, but not the end of the world. 5
3: Oh No, that would be a disaster! 5

The comments were generally disappointed, but some also expressed understanding. So blocking UK access would be a real inconvenience to 5 people. I regret that, but they may be able to use one of the other web interfaces to Usenet, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web-based_Usenet#Web-based_sites_and_popularity . Also UK people are only about 15% of my users now.

I have seen comments that having a .uk address is enough to bring a site into the scope of the act. I'm not convinced about that, but to be on the safe side I have reregistered my site as newsgrouper.org with a redirect from newsgrouper.org.uk .

My software is available at: https://chiselapp.com/user/cmacleod/repository/newsgrouper/home so if anyone else wants to take on the job of running an instance that would remain open to UK users, they are welcome to do so.

I’ve been reading and trying to wrap my head around usenets and while I’m making some progress, some things still don’t make sense. In particular copyright enforcement and why it is not easier than torrents to enforce copyrights.

With torrents, all a copyright lawyer has to go by is the IP address of a seed, but if they use a no logging VPN, it’s a dead end. In Canada there’s been some new legal precedent where courts have allowed copyright holders to sue unnamed people at IP addresses, and also a real time takedown system to remove pirated live sports. Still looks like a dead end with a good no logs VPN (good luck getting them to log without a court order).

With usenets, it’s a bit more centralized, so can’t copyright holders just sign up for all the providers and indexers and when they find their copyrighted content, ask the providers to take down all the files associated with the .nzb across all servers they are in control of? As well, can’t they get a court order to require the usenet providers to handover logs and personally identifying information for everyone that downloaded any portion of those files?

Second question, despite all these copyright cat and mouse games, why does there not appear to be a market for a usenet or streaming service, say in Russia, that gives you any material you could want thats protected by copyrights in western countries? ISPs in the west would just see regular HTTPS traffic, albeit from Russia, and I’m sure the Russian govt wouldn’t care if it’s a curated library of only western copyright protected stuff?

Hello i'm new to Usenet I went with Eweka for 6 months as one of my providers and did a 3-day trial with Hitnews. They have offered me a coupon for 50% off and was just curious would that be a good deal or should I just stick with one provider? They both would be the unlimited plan.

I asked a question about their octane vpn which does not work anymore and will be closed in june. The bot said i could wait for someone to chat and i would get a mail when someone would be available. In 3 days, no one came to chat and i got no mail. Their support page gives errors, seemingly there's no-one there.

But their server is still working, black friday deal, 6 months unlimited for 17.50 E since 2 years now so very cheap. Any thundernews users here?
