Original Title: On this day 59 years ago, on December 28, 1964, 16-year-old Beverly Jarosz was brutally murdered in her Cleveland suburb home of Garfield Heights, Ohio. The medical examiner who also worked on The Cleveland Torso Murders, described it as the most horrifying scene he ever witnessed. Who killed her?
Heads up - There will be A TON of background information given, before any of the Beverly Jarosz case suspects get spoken about after all of this background information.
Beverly Jarosz was an American 16-year-old girl living in Garfield Heights, Ohio, when she got brutally murdered in her home on December 28, 1964. By all accounts, she was popular, intelligent, and kind-hearted, although not athletic in the slightest. Described as a quiet and secretive young girl, friends and family knew that it took her a while to trust people. Beverly had a younger sister named Carol, and they lived with their parents, Thaddeus and Eleanor.
Garfield Heights was a suburb of Cleveland, and a very middle-class suburb at that. Garfield Heights residents were blue collar, hard-working types who pulled late shifts at the local factories, and 9-to-5ers who arrived home at the end of evening. Most women didn’t work outside the home, and people really knew their neighbors and invited them to dinner. Eleanor worked at Gellin Company located at 1111 Carnegie Avenue Southeast, in Cleveland, Ohio. Thaddeus was co-owner of the Universal Lighting and Manufacturing Company at 3599 East 83rd Street in Garfield Heights.
Beverly was 118 pounds, and 5 foot 7-and-a-half. Beverly went through a gawky, pre-adolescent phase, where she wore glasses and braces. The transformation to the attractive girl she would become started around the end of eighth grade, as that's when her former elementary school classmates would come over to be around her.
By the time she was in eleventh grade in 1964, she had completely blossomed into an attractive young woman, who looked 5 to even 10 years older than her actual age. Beverly was a striking young woman with a nicely curvy figure and eyes the color of the lake, and had many male admirers. Most of the male admirers were boys she went to school with & young men in her neighborhood, but there were a few admirers that were older men who were out of her age bracket. In the summers, Beverly liked to sunbathe in her backyard and read books.
Throughout the year of 1964 before the murder, notably in the summer, there were some weird & unsettling disturbances, like multiple phone calls a day where the caller hung up immediately after someone answered the phone, and unsigned presents left for Beverly in her backyard. The presents were a silver ring and a bracelet, left in the back door which the Jarosz family didn't use. The gift-wrapped box that had the ring and bracelet was from Higbee’s, or at least put in a Higbee's box.
The most disturbing occurrence of them all, is when Beverly's dad Thaddeus (aka Ted) came home from work one night, to find a man looking up at the window of the bedroom Beverly shared with her sister. Beverly's dad chased the man, but he managed to get away after being chased for a block.
Because of all this, Beverly always made sure all the doors were locked, and would always peek out the curtains to know who was there before answering the door. One time, she even locked her parents out of the house, because she was so paranoid. Additionally, Beverly always placed phone calls to her family to let them know she was safe.
Beverly additionally purchased a letter opener (a knife-like desktop tool, although much smaller and less sharper than an actual knife), which she kept on her desk (there's a misconception that she kept it on her nightstand). The desk was in the bedroom by the door that led downstairs However, regarding the presents, Beverly's sister was told by Beverly's best friend Margie that Beverly actually wore the silver ring, although Beverly did not know who purchased the ring.
On December 28, 1964, Beverly and Carol woke up in the 8:30-9:00 am time range, and had breakfast with their parents, before seeing them off to work. Beverly had plans to meet up in the afternoon with her best friend Mary-Margaret Gorney (better known as Margie), and another friend who was getting closer in the friend circle, named Barbara Klonowski.
Before that, Beverly and her sister Carol made plans to go to their grandmother’s house for lunch. They left for their grandmother's house around 10:00-10:15 am after their parents left for work earlier. The route Beverly and Carol took to their grandma's house was through Turneytown Shopping Center.
Along the route, they stopped at F.W. Woolworth for a hairnet for their grandma, then went to Hough's Bakery for a loaf of bread. They arrived at their grandma's around 10:30-10:45 am. At 11:00 am, Beverly made plans to meet up later with Barbara Klonowski so they could walk to the house of Beverly's best friend, Mary Margaret Gorney (better known as Margie Gorney). Barbara, who lived on 12205 Oak Park Boulevard, would meet Beverly at her address of 10921 Thornton Avenue (which was a mile away and 3 minute car ride), and they would walk half a mile (10 minute walk from Beverly’s) to 10728 Raymond Avenue, which is where Margie lived.
At 11:30 am, Beverly calls Margie, telling Margie that she and Barbara would be over at Margie’s house (which was a couple blocks from Beverly’s) between 1-2 pm. Beverly stayed at her grandmother's for around an hour and a half, as she needed to get home to get ready to meet with Barbara, as they were meeting Margie at her house.
Around 12:00-12:15 pm, Beverly was getting ready to walk home from her grandma's house. At this time, the grandma's neighbor, an 18-year-old man named James, arrived home in his car, and as he was approaching his house, his mom saw Beverly out on the street in the cold, and told James to give her a ride home. James drove Beverly home, arriving shortly before 12:30 pm. James pulled into the driveway, dropped Beverly off right near the Jarosz side door, and Beverly thanked him and entered the house through the side door. The side door was the Jarosz family’s main entrance, and it was in between the living room and the kitchen.
In between the time she got home & the time she got murdered, there were three phone calls made to the house, and Beverly made two calls herself from the family home phone in this time as well. At 12:30 pm, Beverly received a call from a jeweler, explaining that her great-grandmother's necklace wasn't worth fixing.
Beverly phoned her mom shortly after around 1pm, relaying the message from the jeweler. The second call Beverly made was to a friend named Barbara Kralik-Miltner, who she spoke with on the phone between 1:05 and 1:15 pm. Beverly asked Barbara Kralik to come over, but Barbara Kralik couldn't hang out that day because she was doing something for the holidays.
Around this time, Beverly received a call from an unknown man who referred to himself as "Steve Stackowicz", who either wanted to know if her father, or either of her parents were home. Beverly wrote down a note saying that "Steve Stackowicz called, will call back later". The words “called” and “later” were underlined on the note.
The Stackowicz note was found by kitchen phone. No one in the house knew anyone by that name. Because it isn't known who the Steve Stackowicz caller was, there's no way to know as to what time the caller called at, or even the order of the call when compared to the other calls made to and from the house. Handwriting experts said that the message was written under heavy pressure and anxiety.
Beverly's concerned grandma called at around 1:20 pm, but Beverly told her she had to hang up right after confirming she got home safe, as it seemed like Barbara was at the door. It is believed that the Stackowicz call was made at least before Beverly's grandma called her, and Beverly simply didn't mention it to her grandma because she was low on time.
It turned out Barbara was reportedly running late, and she got dropped off at Beverly's house by her mom at 1:25 pm. Barbara and her mom noticed that there were no cars in the driveway or parked near the house. Barbara heard loud classical music from the WCLV station blasting from inside the house when she arrived. Barbara said that she proceeded to the side door (which was the main door the family used), and rang the doorbell 10 times, and Barbara got no response.
Barbara said the storm/screen door was locked, but that the actual inner door that led into the house's kitchen was open. She then proceeded to the front door and rang the doorbell. It was when she rang the doorbell at the front, that Barbara said she heard an extremely loud thud, “like someone knocking over a dresser”. Barbara got a magazine from the mailbox, and leafed through it for a few minutes.
Barbara said that she ended up leaving after waiting for anywhere between 5-15 minutes, assuming that Beverly was mad at her for being late, or teasing her. Barbara thought Beverly was “standing her up” as she was the “new girl in the group”. Barbara said she got mad, and said she walked up the street to Turney Road after she left, where she was picked up by a friend who dropped her home.
When her two friends didn’t show up at her house, Margie called Barbara at 2:45 pm. Barbara told Margie that Beverly didn't answer the door. T...

On December 17th police arrested 46 year old Elias Diaz after he slashed two people on the Pennypack Park trail in Northeast Philadelphia. Diaz attacked the people with what was described as a large knife similar to a machete along with threatening a third person. The two attacks occurred during the day time on November 22nd and November 24th, both people who were attacked luckily survived and identified Diaz.
Since his initial arrest the last week police have connected Diaz to multiple cases in Farmount Park using DNA. He is now suspected to likely be the “Farmount Park Rapist”. The cases he has been connected to include the 2003 murder of Rebecca Park who was killed while she was out jogging in the park on July 13, 2003. Diaz has also been formally charged in connection to three other sexual assaults, two of them occuring Fairmount Park in 2003, and one in Pennypack Park in 2007. Diaz committed these other crimes in April of 2003, October of 2003 and August of 2007. Police since December 19th have looked into Diaz as being involved in further cases.

In 1970, Donna Lass was 25 years old and worked as a nurse at the Sahara Hotel Casino in South Lake Tahoe, California. On September 6,1970, Donna went to work and her last logbook entry was at 1:45 PM. Later that day her car was found in the parking lot of her Stateline, Nevada apartment. Nobody saw her leave the casino. In her apartment they found her all her personal items inside except for her purse and the clothes she wore that day.
The next day an unidentified man called Donna’s landlord and her work and told them Donna would be gone due to a family emergency. The call was a hoax and the caller was never identified.
On March 22,1971, a postcard was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle supposedly from the Zodiac Killer who terrorized California from 1968 to 1969. The letter implied that he killed Donna Lass. The Zodiac Killer was known to write letters alluding to other murders and confessed to killing up to 37 people. But his March 1971 letter did not have any evidence linking him to Lass’s murder and she didn’t fit his victim type. No evidence has ever definitely linked the Zodiac Killer to Donna Lass’s case. On Christmas Day 1974, Donna Lass’s sister who lived in North Dakota received a Christmas card of trees covered in snow that was signed “best wishes, St. Donna & Guardian of the pines”.
On August 5,1986, Donna’s skull was found in a drainage ditch near interstate 80 and state route 20 in Placer County, California. No additional remains were recovered at the scene. On December 27,2023, it was announced that the skull was identified as Donna Lass.
The investigation into her death is ongoing.

Hello everyone! I hope that you had lovely holidays spent with your loved ones, or a few peaceful days if you don't celebrate. Thank you for all the upvotes and comments under my post about Emily Bailey- I hope that her case will be resolved soon and her family and friends will find out what happened.
Today I wanted to write about a case of another young (in this instance) girl that left a party and was never seen again.
BACKGROUND
Nevaeh Kingbird was 15 when she went missing from Bemidji, Minnesota, USA, in October of 2021. She was a freshman in highschool and had plans to go to college in Colorado. She wasn't sure about what she wanted to study, but she knew that she wanted to travel.
Her mother, Teddi Wind, said that her daughter was a homebody who "loved her home and her room". She stated that Nevaeh didn't drink or stay out at night. It's still noted that Nevaeh had a lot of friends and was "a boss of everybody, even (her mom)", so she was far from a shy wallflower.
According to her loved ones, Nevaeh loved her family and had a special fondness for her siblings and nephew- she was the third oldest of six. She also loved school; Nevaeh and her family are Indigenous Americans, specifically Ojibwe, and Nevaeh "knew her language and culture well".
Nevaeh also had an artistic side- she drew, painted and used pastels. She also wrote her own poems.
Sadly, Nevaeh has been struggling mentally recently, as two of her friends commited suicide in a short span of time- one in April of 2021 and another one week before Nevaeh vanished. Nevaeh was also bipolar and she has run off before, but she always stayed in contact with her family- once she was away from home for a month.
Teddi Wind said that she was a "strict parent" who wanted to protect her daughter- Nevaeh was enrolled in boxing and self-defense classes.
DISAPPEARANCE
Nevaeh left her home on the 21st of October telling her mom that she was going to the movies with a couple friends. Nevaeh was allegedly happy, even "beyond excited"; These friends then took her to a party.
Nevaeh was last seen on the evening of the 21st of October. She left one home at 1 a.m, and then was seen leaving another one, alone, at around 2 a.m at at Southview Terrace Trailer Park. Nevaeh has left the party "compromised"- she has jumped out of a window and hit her head; She "laid on the ground for a long time and then she ran off"
Teddi Wind called her daughter at the 22nd of October when she was at work in a local casino to check in on her daughter. According to her, Nevaeh was slurring her words, but she claimed that she was fine, despite Teddi feeling that she was lying, and then (Nevaeh) started to cry.
Teddi, worried, left her job and went to the house (I'm not sure what is ment by this; Her own or the one Nevaeh left?)- there were other people in the house so she told them to leave; One person didn't want to let her through to see Nevaeh. She then called the police and waited in her truck untill they came. When they've arrived, they've helped Teddi kick out remaining teens. Nevaeh wasn't there- she and her cousin sneaked out through the back door. Everyone who has been there has been interviewed later in the investigation.
Her mother reported her as a runaway on the 22nd after she realized that Nevaeh wasn't home. Teddi assumed that Nevaeh was with the friends she said that she told her she was meeting with and only gotten worried after she found out that Nevaeh didn't contact anyone and wasn't active on social media for so,e time, which was allegedly unlike her. Nevaeh's cousin, Valahlena Steeprock, said that it was unlike her cousin to not contact her family for months.
A resident near Washington Avenue Southwest and Pine Grove Street Southwest reported seeing a young female near their residence between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. on the 22nd of October- she was allegedly wearing what Nevaeh did when she went missing.
A couple who lived south of the trailer park reported that about eight hours after Neveah was seen jumping out the trailer window, a female matching Neveah’s description had knocked on their door but then left. They later found two windows broken in their detached garage, suggesting someone could have been looking for shelter in the below freezing temperatures. When the police arrived, however, the garage was empty.
In the days after Nevaeh went missing, it turned out that one of her siblings has contracted COVID; Teddi was worried that Nevaeh was sick too, as she had a runny nose before she went missing. The whole family ended up sick and Teddi felt especially ill.
Teddi messaged all of her daughter's social media accounts, but she never responded, she never even seen the messages. Nevaeh's friends told her aunt that she used to be very active on their group chat, but never contacted them after she went missing.
Two months after Nevaeh went missing, her 12-year old brother has learned that Nevaeh and another girl had run to a nearby trailer of someone they knew and climbed into the window after fleeing the party. Det. Sgt Dan Seaberg interviewed the people in the trailer and said that "Neveah and her friend showed up. Neveah and her friend were there for a while visiting. They were talking. The juvenile male’s dad knocks, or stepdad, knocks on the door because he hears voices. So, he’s telling everyone they need to go home. When he knocks on the door, Neveah jumped out of the window. The juveniles looked out the window and Nevaeh was gone". The same juvenile found Nevaeh's phone, which fell between the wall and bed in his room. It was assumed that it fell there when Nevaeh has climbed through the window- the phone was searched, but no clues were found. The tip came too late- by the time it did, the survailence videos of the trailer park were wiped.
Only in early December, after Nevaeh wasn't seen for weeks and then months was her case investigated as something more suspicious.
Searches have been conducted, during which the family found a sweater that reportedly belonged to Nevaeh's grandmother, in a swamp, buried in snow. Nevaeh's grandmother has left the sweater in her daughter's home. The sweater was turned over to the police who used sonar to search the area, but nothing was found. A pair of frozen women's jeans a some makeup was also found, but it's unclear if it's related to the case.
After that, the searches have essentially stopped. The police said that they've utilized ground searches, several interviews, social media analysis, investigations into related reports, aerial searches and the use of canine search teams to find Nevaeh. They've also collaborated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The snow has allegedly make searches much difficult and they were supposed to be renewed once the snow thaws.
Around the 16th of December, FBI has gotten involved.
A rumor started to spread on social media that Nevaeh was kidnapped in the “north end” by an African American male driving a vehicle with Louisiana license plates. The police investigation finally concluded that the rumor originated from an incident in Oklahoma on the 30th of December 2021 that was unrelated to Nevaeh's case.
On the 2nd of January 2022, a candlelight vigil was held at the Lake Bemidji waterfront near the Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues. Around fifty people came to participate.
On the 14th of February, another search was conducted by Nevaeh's family and friends by Bemidji Waterfront.
When the snow started to melt in April, the family of Kingbird and police asked the residents in the Nymore area and south to Hubbard County Road 9 to check all their out buildings, items with covers, and any other areas on their properties where someone may seek shelter." Residents are also asked to check their property for anything that may be related to Nevaeh. The anglers fishing in the area were also asked to stay vigilant.
In May, the police department along with Nevaeh's family, Christian Aid Ministries' Minnesota Search and Rescue, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, the Red Lake Tribal Police Department, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Lakes Area Dive Team and Vigilant K9 operations, has conducted a large 500 acre search of local wetlands and fields through ground searches, dog searches and drones.
On October 2022, a candlelit vigil was held in Nevaeh's memory. A drum group played as people lit candles.
In May 2023, a walk was organized in honor of MMIW in Bemidji. Special attention was drawn to Nevaeh's case, and also that of Jeremy Jourdain, an Indigenous boy who went missing in suspiciously similar circumstances (after a party) in Bemidji in 2016. During the event, a drum group played several healing songs, including a song written specifically for MMIW 218. Throughout the program, attendees had the opportunity to dance, grieve, hear from speakers and participate in a tobacco offering at the lake.
In July, another search was conducted with the use of dogs that were trained to detect human remains. This was done in part to eliminate the theory that Nevaeh died due to hypothermia so that police could follow other leads. Another search took place on the September 25th and 26th. It spanned 150 acres in Bemidji and involved around 200 people. It was the largest ...

Original Title: In December 1947, 60-year-old store clerk Lura Adams was found critically injured on the floor of Louisville, Kentucky’s National Appliance Store. During the investigation, an unusual possible murder weapon was found; a 30 inch crowbar festively wrapped in Christmas paper.
Just after 11am on December 11, 1947, 63-year-old J.W. Greer entered Louisville's National Appliance Store on West Market Street seeking window shades. Minutes after browsing the large one room store, an unsettling sound drew Mr. Greer's attention. He followed it, only to find clerk Lura Adams, 60, sprawled on the floor, gravely injured and surrounded by a pool of blood. Mr. Greer ran from the store and sought help from a nearby pharmacist named John Krekal.
After summoning police, John desperately attempted to render aid to Lura until medical personnel arrived. Sadly, despite their valiant efforts, Lura passed away at General Hospital only hours later without ever regaining consciousness. Her cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma inflicted to the base of her skull. The attack on Lura had been so violent, it had resulted in a deep depression and devastating fracture.
An inventory of the National Appliance Store revealed $39 was missing from the register, along with a $30 tabletop style radio. An intriguing clue was also found amongst the store’s seasonal items; a 30-inch, 7-pound crowbar festively wrapped in light-green Christmas paper and secured with a red silk ribbon crafted from a garment, peeked out from a child's toy wagon. While the paper did not appear to be damaged, later analysis of the crowbar and its wrapping yielded positive results for blood, leading investigators to suspect it as the murder weapon.
Store owner Ben Kraus explained that at the time of the attack Lura had been working alone. That morning, Ben had been working at another store he owned, located just across the street. He adamantly denied having any knowledge of the crowbar found at the scene, stating he neither stocked that style of tool nor the distinctive paper and silk ribbon that had been used to wrap it.
A young witness, nine-year-old Dorothy Whalin, offered investigators a crucial glimpse into the events preceding Lura’s death. Dorothy recounted passing the National Appliance Store at 10:30 AM on her way home. As she stopped momentarily to admire the store’s window display of Christmas toys, she spotting Lura engaged with a customer admiring a wooden rocking horse. As Dorothy continued her walk, she saw the customer abruptly sprint from the store, concealing a radio beneath his arm. She described him as a black male standing roughly 5'8" tall and weighing around 170 pounds. He sported a mustache and donned a brown ensemble; pants, a short coat, and a hunter's cap with tied ear flaps.
The investigation pressed on, with detectives interviewing several individuals matching the description of the man. However, despite Dorothy’s vivid description of the fleeing figure, she was unable to definitively identify any of the questioned suspects as the man she saw.
Lura was laid to rest in Louisville’s Eastern Cemetery. Born in Indiana and widowed twice, she left behind five children; one son and four stepdaughters. Sadly, with no definitive leads, the case quickly settled into a disheartening silence until Lura’s death became just another unsolved chapter in Louisville’s history.

During the summer of 1952, 10-year-old Constance “Connie” Smith traveled with her mother from her home in Wyoming to Greenwich, Connecticut to visit her grandparents. Connie, the granddaughter of a former Wyoming governor, was enrolled by her mother (Helen Smith) in a summer camp known as Camp Sloane to keep her occupied, located in Salisbury. Her family would last see her on July 11, 1952, when her mother and grandparents drove up to the camp to celebrate Connie’s birthday. Just five days later, Connie would disappear.
On July 15, 1952, Connie suffered a fall at camp and broke her glasses as well as bruised her hip, which the camp dispensary gave her an ice pack for. The next day on July 16, she reportedly got into an altercation with other girls attending the camp, leaving her with a bloody nose. Following the fight, Connie told her tentmates that she was going to skip breakfast and return the ice pack for her hip to the dispensary. However, Connie never went to the dispensary, and the ice pack was found in her tent hours later when camp counselors noticed her absence. Panicked, the camp staff alerted the police.
The camp’s caretaker, August Epps, reported that he saw Connie picking flowers around half a mile from camp while driving to work that morning. Epps indicated that he believed Connie was a counselor and didn’t think anything of her being in that location. Connie was sighted and interacted with multiple people after this sighting. Connie knocked on a woman who lived nearby and asked for directions to Lakeville, Connecticut. The woman told Connie the route and said that she began to cry as she walked away from the house. Another couple reported seeing Connie walking down a road two miles from Camp Sloane and another woman reported seeing her on the north side of State Route 44. At one point, Connie was seen on the side of the road, holding out her thumb in an apparent attempt to hitchhike.
Police initially suspected Helen Smith of hiding Connie. Helen was divorced from Connie’s father and the two shared custody of their daughter. Police suspected she may have been attempting to keep Connie past the allotted custody time. However, this theory was quickly discarded. A massive search went underway of the surrounding area, however no sign of Connie was found.
In 1962, police officials exhumed the body of a Jane Doe in Arizona known as Little Miss X due to speculation the unknown girl could be Connie, however, this was determined to not be the case. Connie’s case has had several suspects. In 1953, a traveling jewelry salesman named Frederick Pope confessed to police that he, an associate named Jack Walker, and a woman named Wilma Sames picked Connie up along Route 44 and promised to take her to Wyoming. Pope then claimed that they killed her and dumped her body in Arizona, shortly after which Pope claimed to have murdered Jack Walker with a tire iron. While initially seeming promising, police began to doubt Pope’s story after no record of Jack Walker or Wilma Sames could be found. During later questioning, Pope claimed the story had been completely made up. Another suspect emerged known as William Redmon, who was convicted in the 1980s of strangling an 8-year-old girl in 1951. Redmond bragged to fellow inmates that he had killed four people. Redmond is also suspected in the 1951 disappearance of Beverly Potts from Cleveland, Ohio. Redmond was a carnival worker who lived a highly transient lifestyle, however, police have been unable to determine if he was in Connecticut during July of 1952.
As of 2023, there have been no new developments in Connie’s case. Connie’s father believed she was abducted while trying to hitchhike back to Wyoming. At the time she vanished, Connie was five feet tall and weighed around eighty-five pounds. She was last seen wearing a brown halter top, a red windbreaker, and blue shorts with plaid cuffs. Her clothes would have had nametags sewn onto them. She may have been carrying a purse with pictures of her friends. Connie was thought to look older than her age and was extremely near-sighted without her glasses, being nearly unable to read without them. She would have been 81 years old in 2023.

UK true crime cases
What UK true crime comes to mind first?
There’s so many for me that hit home as someone who grew up in London.
Stephen Lawrence, Damilola Taylor, Victoria Climbiè, Peter Conley, Claudia Lawrence.
Claudia Lawrence is so confusing and there’s so many theories to it. I think she was being stalked and something happened to her on her way to work. I just hope they find her one day.
Victoria Climbiè is heartbreaking and even though she didn’t have a happy ending, the child protection services in the UK has improved slightly, still not brilliant at all but it definitely opened eyes as to how bad it used to be. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Victoria_Climbié
Another one for me is Charlene Downes, I really hope she’s found one day. Despite what you think of her family, to hear your child may have been sold in a kebab shop for food, is heartbreaking.
What’s everyone’s first one that comes to mind? I’m really intrigued as I feel like we always hear of USA cases but not so much UK

It had been visible on Google Maps for years, and even the diver who discovered it said he had seen it before in 2001, but it would take until February 2013 for him to find it again. On a helicopter flight off the coast of Tanzania, near Mafia Island on the Indian Ocean, Alan Sutton noticed a series of structures poking above the water at low tide. After several unsuccessful attempts to find the structures by ship, Sutton finally managed to locate the ruins for a third time in March 2016, and at last had a chance to take photos from up close.
The ruins were new to Sutton and the world, but not to local fishermen, who knew of them and said that they had once brimmed with people. Its construction, using concrete, cement, or sandstone, is unlike any other ruins in Tanzania. Based on the age of corals growing on the site, Sutton estimated that it had been underwater for at least 550 years. Tsunamis are a common visitor to Tanzania, and likely visited this site more than once.
Where is Rhapta?
Claudius Ptolemy, a 2nd century CE Roman geographer, described Rhapta as a metropolis. However, there is only one surviving firsthand account of a Roman visitor to Rhapta, written by an unknown author. The city was almost 4,000 km away from the border of the Roman Empire and near the edge of the known world. The ancient manuscript Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, written around 40 CE, says:
There lies the very last market-town of the continent of Azania, which is called Rhapta; which has its name from the sewed boats (rhapton ploiarion) already mentioned; in which there is ivory in great quantity, and tortoise-shell. Along this coast live men of piratical habits, very great in stature, and under separate chiefs for each place. The Mapharitic [Arab] chief governs it under some ancient right that subjects it to the sovereignty of the state that is become first in Arabia. And the people of Muza [Yemen] now hold it under his authority, and send thither many large ships, using Arab captains and agents, who are familiar with the natives and intermarry with them, and who know the whole coast and understand the language.
What evidence is there that these are the ruins of Rhapta? Ptolemy placed the city at 8 degrees latitude south of the equator, which is very close to the location of the ruins. He mentioned the nearby Mafiaco Island; remember Mafia Island? Lastly, and most remarkably, he wrote that the people of Rhapta were called Rafiji—the same name that the inhabitants of Mafia go by today.
Are these the ruins of ancient Rhapta or something else?
Sutton and others say that the ruins may be from a lost centuries-old Portuguese fort. In 1890, Germany took control of Mafia, and a surveyor noted that the old colonial fort had been flooded by the sea. Sutton's team has been searching for the fort, but has otherwise found no trace of it. Follow-up archaeology is ongoing, but faces slow progress due to the remote location of the ruins and the difficulty of underwater archaeology. The tiling at the site more closely resembles Ancient Roman craftsmanship than a more modern colonial Portuguese one.
Where else might Rhapta be?
The Rufiji people do not only live on Mafia Island; they also inhabit the nearby coast of mainland Tanzania, and give their name to the Rufiji River. A popular idea is that Rhapta was on the river delta and was flooded away over the ages. Rhapta was not described as an island city. Other scholars believe that Rhapta was located further north in Tanzania, and maybe at the country's modern capital, Dar es Salaam, but this may be a worse match for Ptolemy's geographical description. No convincing ruins have been found here, though given the region's environment and the toll of two thousand year's time, this may not be a surprise.
Mysteriously, Rhapta is only ever mentioned in Roman and Byzantine texts. A wide array of civilizations traveled and traded on the Indian Ocean, but none besides these two ever mention the city. Rhapta vanishes from the historical record without reason. The last Byzantine text to describe the city dates to the 6th century CE. After that, silence, and another ancient enigma.

There's so many that just doesn't make sense to me!
So many that I have no idea how nothing has come from it.
Many for me are Brandon Swanson, Andrew Gosden, Ben Needham, Trevor Deely, Amber Tuccaro and Relisha Rudd etc
Amber Tuccaro is just mind boggling tbh as how haven’t they found out who the Uber driver was!?!
Another big one that just confuses me and slightly scares me too is Joanna Lopez.
Obviously Maddie McCann is a big one too but I think we will find one out one day. As there has been so much development within the last few years, but whether or not they will charge him is a different story!
So many keep me up at night with so many questions and how nothing has come from it.
What's everyone's most intriguing and confusing to them? I’d love to know!

The Disappearance
On July 18th, 2010, at 2 am, Kara Denora Rigdon spoke to her mother. She assured her that she'd be home soon. There's no mention of how Kara sounded on that phone call. If she knew that something was going to happen. If she knew that she was in danger. If she knew that it would be the last time she spoke to her mother. She never arrived home and never showed up for work later that morning. On July 26, her car was found abandoned on Bluegrass Parkway, the westbound side, with the windows rolled down and a nearly full tank of gas.
And that's about it for what's known about Kara's disappearance. She's never been found. No one's ever been charged. The fund for information on her case expired in 2012 as far as I can tell and I struggled to find more recent articles about her. Yet for as little information as there is about her case, investigation into it led to several very bad people being put behind bars.
The Ex and His Family
Kara Rigdon was once married to a man named William Robert "Bobby" Rigdon. They divorced in 2003, got back together in December of 2009, and then once again split up in June 2010. They had two kids together during their extended relationship. Austin, who would have been around eight when his mother went missing, and Nora, who would have been around one.
Mugshots of Rigdon show a heavily tattooed man with his daughter's name written across his neck as well as more tattoos visible just out of frame. At some point between mugshots he also obtained several tear drop tattoos on his face and his most recent mugshot shows what appears to be the word "twisted" written above his eyebrow. I'm unsure of the exact dates of the mugshots.
In September of 2010, due to evidence found while searching for information on Kara's disappearance, several members of the Rigdon family were arrested. But not for charges related to Kara. Bobby's father, William Joseph "Joey" Rigdon was charged with attempted murder, arson, and more in connection with an incident in 2004 where a trailer caught fire and exploded. Bobby was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument (unable to find out exactly what he was doing). His sister-in-law, Wendy Rigdon, was charged with intimidating a witness. After these arrests, Bobby's twin brother, William David "Billy" Rigdon turned himself in and was charged with possessing stolen property. Bobby and Billy were already facing additional charges when they were arrested in 2010. In 2005, Bobby and Billy are believed to have kidnapped a teenager girl from the same trailer that Joey previously blew up.
Two years after his arrest, in September 2012, Bobby Rigdon shot Wendell "Gleason" Pyles to death while he was working. A cigarette with Bobby's DNA linked him to the scene. Pyles was a former member of the Iron Horsemen Motorcycle club, the same motorcycle club that Bobby is a part of. It is said that Pyles borrowed money from the president of the club, David Salyers, and didn't pay it back. Salyers wanted Pyles dead because of this, but couldn't do it himself due to being partially paralyzed from a stoke. So Bobby did it to show his commitment to the club. He was convicted in 2015 and is currently serving 38 years. Salyers was also convicted for his complicity in the murder and was sentenced to 20 years in 2014.
A Bit About the Iron Horsemen
The Iron Horsemen MC is an outlaw motorcycle club founded in Ohio in the 60s. Their insignia is a winged, iron horsehead. They also have a poorly designed website that lists fallen members and the contact information to send money to members who are currently in prison. Bobby, also known as Hellraiser, is one of these members that you can send money to.
The MC has been involved in murders, assault, drug trafficking, and gun smuggling. They are known to have connections to Mexican drug cartels. In 2008 six members were arrested and charged with dealing drugs in Western Kentucky between December 2003 and December 2005. The DEA and ATF have been involved in busting several members of the MC.
Conclusion
There is so little information about Kara and her case, but there is nothing to show that she was involved with the Iron Horsemen or the criminal side of Bobby. She did seem to love motorcycles though and it's possible that's how they connected in the first place. She had a tattoo of the Harley Davidson logo on her left ring finger and the logo for West Coast Choppers on her right ankle.
It is possible, and likely, that even if she wasn't involved, she knew about some of the Rigdon's criminal dealings. Which, with her having separated from Bobby again, would be a reason for the Rigdon's (and the MC) to want her to disappear.
It's just as likely, however, that Bobby acted on his own. He's proven himself, both before and after her disappearance, to be a violent man. He would not be the first man to disappear his ex simply because his fragile pride and ego was damaged.
And of course, there's always the option that Kara disappeared on her own. Usually one of the least likely scenarios but perhaps slightly more likely in this case. If she did know what Rigdon was involved in, if she did know about the MC and all that was going on there, disappearing for her safety and that of her kids could seem like a good idea.
Whatever the case, it's been over a decade since she disappeared and there are still no answers for her waiting family.

Hello everyone! Happy holidays! I wanted to thank everyone for reading and voting on my post about Brenda Matissen. I hope that her mystery will be solved soon and that she will come back to her family.
Today I wanted to write about a case that happened around this time of year two years ago.
BACKGROUND
Emily Bailey was 23 when she went missing from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 2021. She was the fourth of five siblings and grew up moving between neighbourhoods on the east and central Hamilton Mountain. Emily attended four elementary schools between junior kindergarten and Grade 8. According to her brother, she didn't come to classes in highschool often.
She had two daughters, three year old Harper and two year old Kynslee. The girls had two different fathers (I'm not saying this to in any way shame Emily, I'm saying this to give more context and background to her life before she went missing). Harper lived with Emily's mother and Kynslee lived with her paternal grandparents.
Emily struggled with unspecified mental health issues, addiction (that started when she was a teen) and periods of homelessnes (she'd live in a tent outside during warmer months). Her addiction seemed to take form of episodes, and not continous use. Her family says that she managed to stay sober during her pregnancies, but she'd relapse after giving birth. Her brother said that she often tried to hide the addiction from her family out of shame and fear of rejection and she sometimes distanced herself from them during her periods of using. Despite that, she managed to stay in contact with her family and friends and especially her daughters, who she loved with her whole heart. She posted on social media often and loved holidays. She always messaged her family members on their birthdays and other holidays or visited them. She had plans to return to school, find employment and get sober for good; She actually might've started a new job shortly before vanishing.
Emily and Brandon Hunter, father of Harper, met in 2018. They've lived in Scarborough/Toronto for 3 or 4 months. They've reconnected and talked almost every day.
For a year and a half, Emily was dating a "very physical" man, and their relationship was implied to be toxic. She had contact with him a few times after the break-up, but it's unclear if she was with him at the time of her disappearance.
In the Fall of 2021, Emily started to see someone new, a man named Jeffrey Johnson, her friend Nikki's brother-in-law, who was about 10 years older than Emily. She at first seemed to be much happier and moved in with Johnson, though she seemed depressed on her social media posts. Her friends, Erika and Emily, would regularily video call Emily to chat, but since she started to date Jeff, contacting her became difficult. On the 24th of November, she texted Brandon Hunter that she had a positive pregnancy test and planned to have an abortion. On the 25th of November, Emily sent Erika and Emily a photo of a positive pregnancy test, and was allegedly very, very scared and didn't know what to do. According to Brandon, Emily and Jaff's relationship was “on and off” and "rocky".
Her brother, Ben, described her as "(...)very outgoing… Loud, but in a good way. She very much makes friends everywhere she goes. We have a lot of inside jokes that no one else gets." Her mother said that Emily was "(...)full of personality and loved her kids. She was a good person. Very thoughtful … She loved her family and cared a lot about her friends".
DISAPPEARANCE
Emily's mother last saw her in November 2021 and talked with her in December 2021. December was also the last time she spoke with her brother.
In the week before her disappearance, Emily has interacted with a dark GMC or Chevrolet pickup truck that the police wanted to localize. It's unclear if they've actually found that specific truck; Johnson owned a black truck that was towed by police in November of 2021 and often borrowed Nikki's boyfriend's truck that looked very similar. The police inspected the truck, but nothing was found. Johnson was involved in stealing and reselling goods and he needed a car to do it.
Emily visited her friend Nikki for the 28th of December. Two of them dyed their hair green and Emily stayed for dinner. During that visit, Nikki said that she wanted to "hang out" with Johnson on the new year's eve. Nikki called a cab, which arrived on 10:30PM and took them to Johnson's house. Cab driver confirmed that they've both arrived.
Emily was last believed to be seen around the 31st of December 2021/1st of January 2022, though some groups and sites ran by her family say that she was last heard from on the 2nd of January. She was attending a new year's party at a house at Weir St N she shared with her boyfriend and has left the house on the next day. She was also reportedly trying to catch a ride on the 31st of December, sending a message to her friend in Toronto asking if she had one and texting Brendan around 12:30PM on 31 December, also asking for ride. Some reports also say that she was last seen on Kenilworth Ave N and Barton St E, possibly "with friends" (there are different reports about where she was last seen). According to Nikki, the "party" could've just been Emily drinking with Johnson, as she didn't say anything about a party.
Brandon contacted Johnson in the early January asking where Emily was; He actually drove to his house, where Johnson appeared to be on drugs. Johnson actually invited Brandon into his house, where Brandon allegedly saw a pile of cellphones. Johnson said that he and Emily got into a fight on the new year's and she left.
The last contact Brandon Hunter, father of Harper, had with Emily, was when he sent her a happy new year's message at 2:36 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Emily didn't respond, but there was a notification that she has seen the message.
Around the 2nd or 3rd of January, Johnson allegedly had a bad cut on his hand from "sharpening a chainsaw".
She was reported on the 10th of January by Brandon Hunter. Emily didn't show up to an appointed visit with her daughter. Emily always scheduled these visits and never missed them.
They police arrived to Johnson's house around the 10th of January, but he didn't want to let them in, claiming that he had COVID and was recovering from a surgery. A milling property used by Johnson in Dunnville, ONT, was also searched, but nothing was found.
Hamilton police did extensive searches for Emily, but due to the circumstances of her disappearance, her case has been passed onto the homicide unit. The announcment was released on the same day as Kynslee's second birthday.
In July, a forensic van has been seen on the street near the home on Weir St. N. The police has confirmed that they were collecting evidence related to Emily's case. The home has also been searched.
On the 15th of December, a birthday party was supposed to be thrown for Emily at Gage Park by her family, but it had to be postponed due to weather.
Around the 18th of May 2023, a new video has been uploaded to Emily's tiktok account. The video was a simple photo of a dog lying on some grass with the song "Cupid" by K-pop girl group Fifty Fifty playing in the background. It understandably caused a lot of emotions in Emily's family and it was reported to police. There are no further publicly available developents, but it seems to be all but confirmed that it was the work of a hacker and is unrelated to Emily's disappearance.
CONCLUSION
I think that in order for police to consider a case a homicide wihout finding a body they must have some hard evidence; I'm afraid that Emily is no longer alive. I would not be at all suprised if Johnson had something to do with it- given that their relationship was pretty rocky, and when substances are added to it, I can see them getting into an argument that turned physical which ended Emily's life, by accident or not. The wound on his hand is suspicious, but it seems like he did indeed work with woodcutting, so maybe it's a red herring? It's a sad fact that one of main reasons for the death of pregnant people is homicide, very often by a partner. We don't know if Johnson knew about Emily's pregnancy or how he reacted to it.
I can also see someone seeing likely drunk Emily on the street after she left the home and took advantage of her state, killing her.
Emily was clearly a very vulnerable person, who struggled with addiction, homelessnes and feelings of guilt and shame related to it. She was also pregnant with a man who also did drugs and earned money in a pretty unsavory way. It's a shame that she fell prey to someone who might've seen her as "disposable". Emily's family and friends dearly miss her every day; She left behind two daughters who thankfully have family looking after them, but they must be missing their mom.
The Hamilton Police Services Board has approved a $20 thousand reward for information on what happened to Emily.
When she went missing, Emily was 23, and is about 25 now. She was white, 5’4" (64 inch / 163 cm) and about 100 lbs (45 kg), of slim build. She had shoulder-length black/brown hair, with dyed blue or green highlights. She had a tattoo of an elephant on her left forearm and a batman symbol on the outside of her right forearm. If you have any informations about Emily's last movements, call 905-546-4863. To provide information anonymously, call Crime Stoppers at 1-8...

I just found out about this woman and her case early this morning (December 25, 2023). As such, I am uncertain as to whether or not I will be able to offer a write up as great and thorough as users of this subreddit may be accustomed to. I will try, regardless. Here goes...
Zhu Ling, 50, bodily died this past Friday in China, on December 22, 2023.
In reality, Zhu Ling - along with the life she was working towards, and her dreams - died in 1994, when she was a university student.
Born on April 24, 1973, Zhu Ling was just 23 years old, an undergraduate sophomore majoring in Chemistry at Tsinghua University - often called "China's MIT" - when she began to experience odd physical symptoms, beginning in October 1994.
She had sudden, abdominal pain, hair loss, and "other seemingly inexplicable symptoms," that were eventually determined to be signs of Thallium poisoning after she fell into a coma.
Thallium - a highly toxic chemical, takes the form of an inelastic, soft, yet heavy metal - is both tasteless and odorless. While it has not been used in the United States of America since 1984, and does not dissolve in water, Thallium can be released into the air by aerosol (fine particles). This means it can be used to contaminate food via digestion. It can also be inhaled, and absorbed through contact with the skin. It is used in insect and rodent poisons.
Thallium caused Ling to suffer for months. She lapsed into a coma before diagnosis. Ling - an accomplished musician - suffered serious neurological damage that would leave her permanently physically impaired. She would lose much of her cognitive functions, and her exposure to Thallium poisoning left her with the mental capacity of a young child, age six, to be exact, in addition to becoming almost completely blind.
Ling's diagnosis of Thallium poisoning was attributed greatly to the efforts of two of her friends, Cai Quanqing and Bei Zhicheng. The Peking University students posted Ling's symptoms on several internet Usenet groups on April 10, 1995. Frustrated with lack of a diagnosis for Zhu Ling, their decision to seek, what at the time, was considered one of the first successful remote diagnosis by internet, was laterheralded, with responses pouring in within a matter of hours.
Nearly one-third of the 1,500 online responses proposed that Zhu Ling was suffering from the effects of Thallium poisoning.
And, it turned out, this hypothesis was correct.
Physicians subsequently tested Ling for, and found, "extraordinarily high" levels of Thallium in her body - 10,000 times higher than the amount regularly detected in people. This discovery allowed doctors to deliver an antidote to Zhu Ling - Prussian Blue - to save her life. But the effects of Thallium poisoning had already wreaked too much havoc on Ling's body systems. She would never be the same.
After her diagnosis of Thallium poisoning was determined, after she emerged from her coma, Ling's parents cared for their daughter for the next three decades. Ling was never able to complete her undergraduate degree in Chemistry.
A police case was opened, and though a suspect was found at one time - Ling's female roomate - no charges were ever brought against her, or anyone else. There was a definite suspicion of foul play during the early beginnings of Ling's ordeal, but the high-profile case has long been cold - and mysterious. People have wondered who poisoned Ling - why and how - for years.
Zhu Ling will be buried in Beijing, China, according to her father.
Who poisoned Zhu Ling in 1994 when she was 23? Through what method? And what, what possibly could have been the perpetrator (s) motive?
If the poisoning was not foul play, how did Zhu Ling come into contact with Thallium? As a hypothetical example, was she working in a lab doing undergraduate research, or spending time in a classroom, where Thallium had been perhaps used by someone else?
If, as suspected and more likely, Zhu Ling was deliberately poisoned, by what method (s) and in what form, was the Thallium obtained to poison her with
If Ling's roomate was poisoning her, why did she herself not become ill? What evidence or theory was presented for the police to suspect Zhu Ling's roomate?
Who poisoned Zhu Ling, and ended her life as she knew it?
Her case remains unsolved, unresolved, and cold.
What do you think? Who do you think poisoned Zhu Ling in 1994-1995?
If she was not poisoned deliberately, how did she come into contact with Thallium? So much so, that it incapacitated her?
I will edit this post as needed if, or as I, find more information.

Randy Kraft was a serial killer operating in Southern California in the 70s and early 80s.
Kraft is suspected of killing as many as 67 men. Many of his victims were marines.
His scorecard has multiple unsolved entries in that scorecard that begin with MC, which is believed to stand for "Marine Corps"
Ive seen cases where marines have gone missing and have been labeled as AWOL. one of their families had to fight for years for their loved one to be officially reported missing, due to their placement on the AWOL list.
Oral Alfred Stuart disappeared in 1974, his body was found soon after, but remained unidentified. Oral was listed as AWOL for 37 years until his body was finally identified in 2011
If i could obtain a list of AWOL marines who disappeared during the years Kraft operated, i could potentially link them to existing john does, and potentially solve some cases.
Does anyone know if i could submit a FOIA for that info, and if so, how i would go about it?

On March 14, 1960, the bodies of three women were discovered in Starved Rock State Park, near Utica, Illinois. The victims were Mildred Lindquist, Lillian Oetting, and Frances Murphy, all of whom were well-off housewives from the Chicago suburbs. A large manhunt ensued to find the perpetrator or perpetrators. Police eventually arrested Chester Weger, a 21-year-old dishwasher who had worked at the Starved Rock Lodge in the park. Weger confessed to the murders, which solidified his guilt in the eyes of the public. He served almost 60 years in prison, before being paroled in 2019.
Weger has maintained his innocence and has claimed that police threatened him in into confessing. New evidence has emerged in the case which could point to a different perpetrator. A hair was found in the hand of Frances Murphy, one of the victims. The hair was found with the root attached, indicating that Murphy had ripped the hair out in a struggle with the killer. Weger's attorney, Andrew Hale, says familial DNA testing had linked the hair to four brothers who lived in the area (all of whom are now deceased).
