Richard Hansen, better known as Dick, was born on February 23, 1955 in San Jose, California. Born into a prominent Santa Clara County family, Dick spent his entire life in the area, attending Santa Clara University where he played football. Dick had been married, but he and his wife had divorced several years previously. He had two daughters, aged 13 and 11 in 1991.

On the evening of April 29, 1991, Dick went out with a friend who has only been referred to as "Jean." Dick's case has been featured on Unsolved Mysteries, and more recently, Dates From Hell. While the Dates From Hell episode presented the evening like it was just Dick and Jean, Unsolved Mysteries presented the situation as though they were out with more friends. Either way, dinner was had at Original Joe's restaurant, and it seems they also went to a club afterwards.

At around 1:00am (although one source says 1:30am), Jean drove Dick back to his car, which had been left at Original Joe's. Dick and Jean spent some time talking in Jean's car when Jean noticed a car pull up behind them. Jean took note of the car because the street had been all but deserted before. Jean did make mention of the fact that since there was a mailbox there, maybe Jean and Dick should pull up to give the guy some room. Dick said the guy had plenty of room. Because Jean didn't know the area very well, Dick agreed to let Jean follow him in her car.

When Dick and Jean pulled out of the street in their separate cars, the man behind them also pulled out. When they made a left turn at a traffic light, so did the man. Once Dick and Jean pulled onto Interstate 280, the man was still following them. This is when Jean knew that this man was following them. When the pair then pulled onto Interstate 85, so did the man. Jean even tried switching lanes several times, but the man was still on their tail. At one point, Jean tried yelling to Dick that they should go to the police, but Dick couldn't hear her because of the road noise. He did yell back that they should pull off onto the next exit.

Dick stopped his car on a residential street, Jean pulled in behind. Then things got really tense. Dick got out of his car, asked Jean if she knew this guy and Jean said no. Dick then walked up to the man's car and something to the effect of "what do you want?" The man then said something that Jean couldn't hear and pointed towards her car, but Dick then got angry and responded with something like "get the hell out of here!" This was when the man pulled out a gun and shot Dick point blank in the chest. Jean wanted to duck down into her car to hide but she was frozen in fear, but the man just drove off. It's unclear if Jean went off to go call the police or if a passing car called. But Dick was dead by the time paramedics arrived.

There seemed to be little motive in Dick's case. All that they had was Jean's eyewitness statement and her license plate, which read "49ER HUGS." This was in reference to the San Francisco 49er football team. Jean was a fan of the team and since Dick still had the physique of a football player, maybe the killer was a fan of a rival team. Also, according to the Dates from Hell episode, Dick was even recognized as a football player while he and Jean were at dinner.

The man who killed Dick was described as a white man with a dark/olive complexion. He may be Hispanic or Mediterranean and at the time of the killing, he was in his late 30s or early 40s and at the time he was wearing large glasses with thick black frames. The car this man was driving appeared to be a 1970s Pontiac GTO LeMans, with either a dull gray or blue paint job. It was a two door coupe.

There is little other information in Dick's case. Jean's real name has never been revealed in order to keep her safe, and Dick's parents have since passed away. This seems to be a memorable Unsolved Mysteries case though.

Update on the Detroit murder of Tamara Greene (known as Strawberry), which rumor claimed was by the mayoral police protection team for Reverend Kwame Kilpatrick. Allegedly Strawberry was beaten into the hospital by the mayor's wife because of her behavior at a party at the mansion, and later Strawberry was murdered.

Firing some of the investigating officers for an issue related to Strawberry started a lawsuit that resulted in the mayor's downfall for some illegal activity, revealed by a subpoena for the mayor's team's city cell phones.

The victim's daughter has released a tiktok claiming her mother was in an affair with Kwame and was murdered at his request by 'police guns.' (I had to link to a news article linking to the tiktok because of board policy)

I've thought a lot about this case. This poor family. I can't stop thinking about how terrible the last few minutes of their lives were. It's not just the cruelty that shocks me, but also the thought that Yasuko and Niina were probably aware that their father/husband and brother/son had just been murdered. The panic they must have felt as they tried to escape the attacker. It's all so unimaginably horrible.

I wonder if a psychological profile of the perpetrator has ever been done. I think this would really help solve the case.

These are my thoughts on it:I think the perpetrator broke into the house with the intention of killing the whole family. That's why he had knives with him. Also, you can assume that 10 p.m. is a time when at least the parents are still awake. Perhaps the murderer even saw that there were still lights on in the house. If he wanted to steal something from the house, he would have waited until he was sure that everyone was asleep so that he could break in undetected. It almost seems as if he wanted his victims to witness their murder and suffer. That is also one reason why I think a murder for hire is unlikely. In this case, he would probably have killed the family in their sleep. The way he killed the family was random. He had no way of knowing exactly what would happen in the house. (I think it's obvious that it wasn't murder for hire; I just wanted to mention that again.)

I personally think that the perpetrator was a psychopathic, violent teenager.I don't think the idea that a teenager who is angry at the world would be capable of such an act of violence is far-fetched. Being a teenager is hard. The development of the brain is not yet complete. There are many biological, emotional, and social factors that can lead to aggression and violence. (If you want to know more, I put some links down below.) Teenagers commit more violent crimes than you would think. Just think about all the school shootings. Besides, I think it is important to note that there were several acts of violence committed by minors in Japan at that time. The murders were the latest in an unusual string of violent acts perpetrated by minors in a country that hadn’t experienced a high level of youth crime. The start of the year 2000 marked a worrying trend.“ Faceless Podcast (Episode 6, 18:10–18:24) I will also link to a few articles about that topic below. They are very interesting, and I would really recommend reading them.Perhaps he was inspired by one of these acts of violence. I don't think there's any great motive behind it. He just wanted to kill someone. There may be several reasons why he chose the family as his victim. Perhaps he himself comes from a difficult family situation and has seen a happy family, which triggers something in him. Maybe he had some mental illness like schizophrenia or something like that. In this case, a quick glance from one of the family members or a laugh as they walked past would be enough to trigger him.One of the articles below mentions the murder of three members of the Iwasaki family by a 15-year-old boy in August of the same year. (Btw, I can hardly believe how little has been reported about this case.). The murders are not even mentioned on Wikipedia's list of serious crimes or somewhere else on Wikipedia. He killed them because of „accusing looks” by the neighbour and his family. It was later reported that he allegedly suffered from serious behavioural disorders and mental problems.Because there are a few similarities between the cases, I just wanted to mention this again to show that there is a good chance that the perpetrator in this case was also a minor. In addition, there are, of course, several indications that point to a younger perpetrator.

  • The estimated age of the perpetrator (15–35 years)
  • His fitness and strength (climbing up a tree, the killings)
  • his clothes
  • the way he behaved at the crime scene and his careless behaviour after the killings.

Another point that I think is very important is the fact that he didn't know for sure if he would succeed in killing all the family members. He had no way of knowing if Mikio or the other family members would fight back or how hard they would fight back, if Mikip had a weapon that he could have used, if anyone would escape, or if the grandmother or some people walking in the park would hear something and alert the authorities.

That can mean two things for me. Either he thinks he's invincible in some way and overestimates himself, or he didn't care if his plan would work and he would be caught. Arrogance and hubris would explain his behaviour at the crime scene. The amount of evidence he leaves behind almost seems like he's mocking the police and the victims. Especially the faeces in the toilet and the fact that he stayed longer in the house and that he ate there show how sure he was that he would not be caught. I mean, he even left his clothes behind, almost as if he's saying, ,I can leave as much evidence as I want and do what I want, and you won't get me anyway‘. I'm not an expert, but perhaps this is also a symptom of his mental illness. A strong overestimation of yourself and the belief that you are superior to others can be symptoms of certain mental illnesses, such as delusions of grandeur or psychosis. I am aware that it is not possible to deduce a mental illness from this fact alone. I just thought I would mention the possibility. I think that so far there has been far too much focus on the motif, the clothes, and things like that. I don't think the perpetrator put much thought into his clothes. The sand in his bag doesn't really mean anything. I often buy my clothes from second-hand stores. It's quite possible that traces of other previous owners will be found. My guess is that the perpetrator is someone who may even have lived close to the family home. Someone who lived within walking distance. Given his actions, he is most likely proud of them and has bragged about them.Even if he didn't tell anyone in person, he told them somewhere online.I firmly believe that the case can be solved by taking a closer look at young locals who showed mental health.problems or committed other crimes at the time.

Jorden Shyann Nebling was born on March 8th 2001. She grew up in foster care, but was adopted by her stepmother Mary Tucker, along with her older sister. Tucker described her as charismatic and having few enemies.

Nebling had a history of drug abuse as a young teenager, and during this time she started a relationship with a man named Tyler Wilkins. The 2 briefly lived together, but the relationship was abusive. According to a cousin of Wilkins, he would deny Jorden food, and had once pushed her out of a moving car. The 2 split after 2 years.

According to Mary Tucker, in October of 2020 Jorden was happy, had taken a drug test and was clean from drugs. She had just gotten a job that she was excited about, was living with her biological mother and was even planning on going to Tucker’s house to celebrate her little brother’s birthday.

On October 9th, 2020, Jorden, and a man she had just started seeing borrowed a car. The 2 were planning on driving from Travelers Rest, South Carolina to Cowpens to see some friends. The man then left Cowpens with a friend that same day.

On October 10th, 2020, Jorden began to drive herself back to Travelers Rest alone. Unfortunately, her car broke down in front of a house near the Old White Horse Road Extension in Travelers Rest. The person living in the home became worried, and went out to speak with Jorden, who assured them that someone was coming to pick her up. The witness then watched as Jorden got in a car with a white male, who drove off at around 1:30pm. This is the last sighting of Jorden Nebling.

Jorden's sister became concerned after not hearing from her in over 2 weeks, and reached out to Mary Tucker, Jorden's stepmother. Tucker said she should speak to Jorden's biological mother, who Nebling was living with at the time. Her biological mother said she believed Jorden had run off, and would return, and therefore had not reported her missing. Tucker described that as “unacceptable” and reported Jorden missing on November 8th, 2020, over 3 weeks after Jorden was last seen.

Investigators quickly determined that the man who had picked Jorden up was her ex-boyfriend, Tyler Wilkins. He confirmed that he had picked her up, but said that after driving her to his house, the 2 had gotten into an argument, and Jorden had left. He said he had no idea where she had gone after this.

The case then went cold, but Wilkins would soon be on the police's radar for a lot more than just Nebling's disappearance.

At 8:34pm on November 9th, 2022, police entered a house on Sawmill Road, South Carolina.

Inside they would find the bodies of Wilkins 22-year-old girlfriend Clarissa Winchester, and her newborn son. Clarissa had apparently been 7 months pregnant when she was murdered. Investigators determined that Clarissa had been held captive inside the home, before being assaulted and beaten to death. She had died of blunt force trauma to the head and neck. The newborn had then been left with his mother’s body and had died of neglect. The scene was described as one of the most gruesome that law enforcement in the area had ever seen.

Police soon arrested 22-year-old Wilkins. He is currently being held without bail on charges of kidnapping, murder, and child neglect.

The cases of Clarissa Winchester and Jorden Nebling are widely believed to be connected, and Wilkins is currently the prime suspect in Nebling's disappearance.

Nebling is described as a Caucasian female, standing at 5'5 and 110lbs. She had blonde hair at the time of her disappearance, with blue eyes, pierced ears and a tattoo that says "live free" on her left forearm.

If you have any information on Nebling’s disappearance or her whereabouts, I encourage you to contact the Greenville County sheriff’s office at 864-271-5210 or Crimestoppers of Greenville at 864-232-7463.

I am happy to announce that the DNA Doe Project has been able to identify Kern County Jane Doe 2011 as Ada Beth Kaplan! Below is some additional information about our work on this case, in addition to some links to articles regarding this identification:

After nearly 13 years, the Kern County Medical Examiner’s Office and the DNA Doe Project have identified Kern County Jane Doe 2011 as Ada Beth Kaplan of Canyon Country, California, bringing closure to a case that has remained unresolved for more than a decade.

On March 29, 2011, Kaplan’s partially decomposed body was found in a vineyard in Arvin, California. The head and thumbs were missing from the corpse, and her body had been drained of blood. The gruesome scene haunted investigators, who worked diligently to identify the remains but ran out of leads. The case went cold until 2020, when the Kern County Medical Examiner’s Office reached out to the DNA Doe Project for assistance.

Team Leader Missy Koski’s group of volunteer investigative genetic genealogists worked tirelessly on the case, employing innovative techniques to restore the identity of Kern County Jane Doe 2011.

DNA matches to the Jane Doe’s genetic profile were distant cousins with common surnames, making building Kaplan’s family tree a time-intensive task to identify ancestors spanning 8 generations and place them in an extensive family tree. Three of her four grandparents were immigrants, meaning researchers were searching Eastern European records to connect her matches to each other.

"Our team worked long and hard for this identification," said Koski, "Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry is often complicated to unravel. When we brought in an expert in Jewish records and genealogy, that made a huge difference."

Investigative genetic genealogy is a set of techniques combining traditional genealogical research with analysis of DNA relatives and has been used successfully in cold cases of unidentified human remains since 2018, when the DNA Doe Project announced its first successful identification - Buckskin Girl.

The DNA Doe Project is grateful to the groups and individuals who helped solve this case: the Kern County Medical Examiner’s Office, who entrusted the case to the DNA Doe Project; HudsonAlpha Discovery for DNA sequencing; Kevin Lord for bioinformatics; GEDmatch Pro and FTDNA for providing their databases; our generous donors who joined our mission; and DDP’s dedicated teams of volunteer investigative genetic genealogists who work tirelessly to bring all our Jane and John Does home.

It is without a doubt the strangest inquiry I have ever been involved with. How a happily married woman could vanish without a trace on a sunny Saturday morning in a busy town centre is totally baffling

  • Detective Chief Inspector Colin Edwards

For my second writeup, I decided to go a little closer to home and focus on a case from the UK. The disappearance of Trevaline Evans has been covered a few times on this sub, but there have been some relatively recent and unexpected twists. I've tried to be as comprehensive as possible so hopefully I've had something to add.

Background and Build-up

There is very little information available online about the earlier life of Trevaline, who was born into the Davies family on 6 September 1937 in Llangollen, Wales. Llangollen is a small, picturesque town in Denbighshire fuelled by farming and tourism; she was to live there all her life.

In 1958 Trevaline married Richard Evans. They had one son, a police sergeant also named Richard. The younger Richard tragically died of a heart attack in 1999 while in his 30s, leaving behind wife Anwen and sons Huw and Owen.

While Richard's occupation has been difficult to uncover, Trevaline herself was in the antiques business and the family were comfortably well-off. Her shop Attic Antiques - opened in 1989, just a year before her disappearance - was located on Church Street near the town centre, bordered by the River Dee on one side and the busy A5 road on the other. Becoming an antiques dealer seems to have been a lifelong dream for her: collecting antiques had always been a hobby and she bought from a wide range of people, ranging from locals to other dealers to town visitors.

Day of the Disappearance

June 1990 was progressing uneventfully for the Evanses. Trevaline and Richard had bought a holiday bungalow in Rhuddlan, a coastal town about 40 miles away; they spent a couple of days renovating it together, but while Trevaline - now 52 - returned to Llangollen on Wednesday 13 June, Richard stayed behind to continue the work.

On Saturday 16 June, Trevaline opened Attic Antiques at her usual time of 09.30 am.1 She had driven the couple's blue Ford Escort to work and parked 200 yards away. It was a sunny summer day and the morning was busy - around 25 friends and family are reported to have entered her shop, and Trevaline behaved normally, making plans to meet a friend for dinner that night.

At around 12.40 pm, so estimated because she had spoken to a friend at 12.30 pm, Trevaline placed a note on the shop door stating that she would be 'BACK IN 2 MINUTES'. This was her standard practice when taking a lunch break, and she appears to have indeed proceeded for lunch, being seen by multiple witnesses buying an apple and banana at 1.00 pm on High Street before crossing to nearby Castle Street. Whether she returned to her shop afterwards is not clear. Although a banana skin was later found in Attic Antiques' bin, the time it was eaten was impossible to confirm.

The last confirmed sighting of Trevaline was at 2.30 pm that afternoon by someone who knew her well, walking near her home on Market Street. There are two further unconfirmed sightings: a woman matching her description was seen five minutes later walking out of town in the direction of Corwen, a neighbouring town, along the A5 and beside the Riverside Park by the Dee. Then at 3.45 pm, a woman resembling Trevaline was seen walking into Park Avenue, further along the A5, from the direction of the river.2

There are no more sightings of Trevaline, confirmed or otherwise, from the day of her disappearance. The shop remained closed all day, forcing customers who purchased items from the storefront boxes to put money through the post slot. By 6 pm, long after she was meant to have returned, her family initiated a search. Still in the shop were her handbag, jacket, and car keys - the car was not moved from where she had parked that morning - and some fruit and flowers given by a friend, which she had intended to bring home that night.

With no sign of her, Richard reported her missing at around 11 pm that night.

Initial Investigation

The police investigation was among the most extensive in North Wales's history. Every household in Llangollen was interviewed, and scores of others in the neighbouring town as well. 330 statements were taken, over 1500 interviews were conducted in a 12-mile radius of the town, and almost 700 cars eliminated from the inquiry. Searchers combed through the mine shafts, caves, River Dee and Llangollen Canal; missing posters were plastered around the town; and Richard offered a £5000 reward for information.

Initially, the best lead appeared to be the presence of a 'well-dressed man' who had been seen with Trevaline in the days before her disappearance. A local noticed her speaking to this man near her shop on the morning of Thursday 14 June; they were reported to have been in each other's company again the next morning. He was described as wearing a navy suit and carrying a black briefcase. This seemed promising enough that an artist's sketch was drawn up and circulated. By 2001 however, when the case was reopened, the sketch was no longer considered accurate. It had failed to generate any leads.

For the next few years the police continued to pour resources into the case. Each tip was followed up, no matter how unlikely. Sightings were reported from as far away as London, France (looked into by Interpol) and even a remote town in Australia. None were her. In 1992, the woodland of World's End near Llangollen was searched on the encouragement of a medium, and canal banks were searched with sniffer dogs the following year after a woman contacted police with the 'overwhelming feeling' Trevaline could be located there. Unsurprisingly, neither tip bore fruit.

Suspects and Serial Killer Links

With no evidence and no hope, Trevaline was declared legally dead in 1997. In January 2001 however the case was reopened in the belief technology had advanced enough to solve the case, and this time suspicion fell on Richard. Although Trevaline had been described as 'happily married' by Detective Chief Inspector Colin Edwards in 1992, local gossip was possibly less positive. Rumours of an affair on Trevaline's part were apparently rife, including with a man who had left her £10,000 in his will. Linda - an ex-girlfriend of Trevaline's brother Philip Davies, whom she met two days after the disappearance - stated that Trevaline's marriage had not been happy, particularly after she had received the inheritance.3

Perhaps more damningly, at least one source states that a witness placed Richard in a pub in Llangollen at around 2.30 pm, soon before her final confirmed sighting; based on this, it would seem he had in fact returned from Rhuddlan that day, but did not report Trevaline's disappearance to the police until much later that night. (Note that other sources maintain Richard was in Rhuddlan, seen by witnesses, until that night). Now 72 years old, he was arrested in June 2001 but subsequently released without charge. He never remarried and died at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on 27 December 2014, aged 83, outliving both his only son and - most likely - his wife.

The 2001 reinvestigation also stalled, but the case was examined once more in 2010 on the 20th anniversary of Trevaline's disappearance. In September 2011 the police announced that they were considering a link to Shropshire serial killer Robin Ligus, who by that point had been found guilty of three murders after being tried for four. This was ruled out in January 2012 - one reason possibly being that all his known victims were male and he did not attempt to conceal the bodies.

A third suspect who has been considered is serial killer Christopher Halliwell, who is serving a whole life sentence for the murders of Becky Gordon in 2003 and Sian O'Callaghan in 2011. He was working in North Wales at the time as a window fitter and a witness placed him in town on 16 June 1990, but this line of inquiry is seemingly not being pursued.

Unexpected Updates

In early 2019, brothers Andrew and Lee Sutton contacted the police with an unexpected lead for the then-29-year-old case. The men - based in Wrexham and Kinmel Bay respectively, in northeast Wales - stated that in February, they had acquired information suggesting to them that Trevaline had been murdered and buried beneath Rhuddlan Golf Club. They had then requested permission from the club to conduct an underfloor inspection on 14 March, and claimed that their special camera revealed the presence of skeletal human remains including a hand and skull. They further claimed that the images were verified by a forensic expert.

Acting on the tip, soon afterwards the police began an excavation at 11:00 am on Tuesday 19 March 2019. Despite X-raying the floor of the club's bar area, and leaving an officer stationed overnight while the work was underway, nothing was found. The brothers however remained insistent that their images showed a body present, going so far as to file a formal complaint about the police's handling of the matter. They maintain that the body was removed in the intervening five days between their investigation and the start of the excavation, and also state that they have received 'threatening phone calls'. On December 20, 2023, an old suspect, the victim’s boss, and the mother of the latter were formally charged (it was asked that they be sent to trial) by Genoa prosecutors for involvement in the murder of Nada Cella. The trial will probably start in late 2024. Specifically, only one woman has been charged with the murder itself. Skip to the end of the post if you want to read about the evidence against the suspects.

Who was Nada

Nada Cella had been working as a secretary at the office of accountant M. S., on the second floor of the building at via Marsala 14 in Chiavari (northwestern Italy), since September 1991. With a first name in vogue at the time because of the success of the Italian singer Nada, the child grew up in a quiet and serene family: her father Bruno was a carpenter, while her mother Silvana was a janitor. She also had an older sister, Daniela. Nada’s life revolved around her job, her family, and her friends – a few close ones with whom, almost every week, she used to go dancing at a disco in Santo Stefano. She had enrolled in an English course to expand her skills. She dreamed of exploring the world, of traveling. Nada also liked going to the gym, listening to foreign music, and taking photographs; she attended church assiduously, too.

The day of the murder

May 6, 1996, 6:20 am: Nada wakes up to accompany her mother to work; they leave the house a few minutes after 7. She then returns home, parks the car under the house, makes the beds, sets the kitchen table for lunch. She goes out again straddling the bicycle with which she will reach her workplace.

7:30: she stops along the way to buy a focaccia. After paying, however, she forgets it on the counter. The sales clerk calls her back, she apologizes and takes it.

7:45: Nada gets to her workplace.

7:51: although she habitually arrives at the office shortly before 9 am, on May 6 she turns on her computer at this time. The doorway, down below, is open because the cleaners are finishing washing the stairs – a hypothetical murderer coming from outside would therefore neither need to ring the intercom nor have the keys to the door.

8:50: someone prints a two-page document using Nada’s computer.

8:45-9:00: three clients call S.’s office. It is Monday and perhaps there is some work urgency accumulated over the weekend. Nada, however, doesn’t answer. The customer who calls around 9 claims to have spoken to a woman, who tells them somewhat rudely that they have the wrong number. So they double-check the number and dial it again. The elderly woman’s voice answers again and repeats to them that is not the accountant’s office. The customer will call again and S. will answer saying that there has been an attack.

9:00-9:01: the downstairs neighbor hears banging coming from the apartment above hers.

9:05: prompted by his mother, S. goes to the office located two floors from his own (he lives in the same building). He finds Nada lying on the floor.

9:20: so says the stretcher-bearer who rescues Nada: “As soon as we entered, we saw a girl loaded supine, with her head facing the wall and her feet directed toward the desk, surrounded by a lake of blood.”

10: Nada is readily taken to the operating room in such serious condition that the doctors operating on her have to ask for help from another surgeon.

11:30: Nada is taken to the intensive care unit, and intubated because she is in a coma.

12:30: doctors ascertain that she is in a very serious condition and try to revive her, but are unsuccessful.

14:10: Nada dies.

The investigation

From the start, the investigation focused on Nada’s work environment. It turned out from reading her diary that Nada was dissatisfied with working with S. – the job was monotonous and boring and Nada was looking for another occupation. She had written in her diary: “I hate that jerk I have to put up with, I want to leave, but I don’t know what to do with myself”. Apparently, there was nothing much else problematic about her life. It looked like she wanted to escape the closed environment of Chiavari and do something different, but in her diaries and her friends’ testimonies there were no concrete clues about who could have killed her.

The autopsy stated that there were injuries to her abdomen, thighs, and left iliac wing. No defensive wounds were found. The killer raged by kicking and punching Nada while she was helpless on the ground. Bending over her body, the murderer then either grabbed her by the hair and slammed her face multiple times on the floor, or they hit her with a blunt instrument. In any case, the blows she received resulted in a large hematoma and cranial injuries. These conclusions are supported by the projection of hematic traces on the wall, and the hair stuck to it and smeared with blood.

Almost nothing significant was recovered from which to start the investigation, also because of some mistakes made by the stretcher-bearers (such as moving the desk to take Nada out of the office) and the police (no appropriate cordoning was arranged despite the possibility of curious observers polluting the crime scene). There were no bloody footprints nor the murder weapon could be found. The entrance to the office was not forced and no one took anything away. No object was missing, suggesting that the weapon had been introduced into the office from the outside and that therefore the murder was to some extent premeditated. Only a button with a five-pointed star, a circle, and the inscription “Great seal of the State of Oklahoma 1907” was found.

There were eyewitnesses outside the building, however. A witness put on record the presence of a woman between 23 and 29 years old, with wavy black hair disheveled above the shoulders, 170 cm tall, who “held up her own right hand, visibly bloodstained on her palm, looking around continuously.” Also, at 12:45 on May 6, someone phoned the police saying they saw a black moped fleeing from via Marsala around 9 or 9:30.hat she didn’t clean up the blood traces in the office and in the hallway in front of it, and this seems to be corroborated by what the investigators found.

Besides S., another suspect watched closely by the investigators was A. C. It is known about her that she was 27 years old at the time, that she grew up in an orphanage, and that she had a romantic interest in the accountant, to the point of asking him to marry her. C. owned a series of buttons that were similar to the Oklahoma one found near Nada’s body. She also had a moped, but inexplicably it was not seized and analyzed by forensics back in 1996. C. moved to Lombardy shortly after Nada’s murder and built a family there.

Later developments

Although there were several suspects, in the aftermath of the murder no one except S. was officially investigated or brought to trial. But in 2005 the file was reopened, starting with Nada’s diaries. In 2006 the Genoa prosecutor’s office investigated two bricklayers, involved in an investigation into a prostitution racket, for the crime. In 2011 yet another attempt to solve the case was made with three hairs that, it will later be explained, did not belong to the victim.

In 2021, also thanks to criminologist Antonella Pesce Delfino who presented an analysis of this case for her thesis, the case was reopened another time, in virtue of the presence of new elements of guiltiness against a suspect, namely C. The latest developments are the following:

  • C.’s moped was recovered and analyzed by the forensic police with negative results.
  • Some phone calls have been circulated in which for the prosecutors C. attempts to convince an ex-boyfriend that they were still together in 1996 (maybe to ward off suspicions of her possible motive).
  • In another phone call between an unidentified woman and Nada’s mother, the former says, “But we talked to a few girls among us, though, and we said, she [C.] has the audacity [to kill Nada] because when she says, ‘I’m going to split her head in two…’”
  • A beggar has also come out and recounted seeing a woman in bloody clothes coming out of the via Marsala building after 9 am.
  • According to Nada’s mother, a few weeks before the murder, the girl had received a bouquet at home with an anonymous note: “For an upcoming or possible dinner invitation.” On that occasion, Nada had confided her suspicions that the gift came from the S.’s aunt. This would be compatible with C.’s motive – she knew that the secretary was a possible rival in love.
  • C. repeatedly threatened by telephone the criminologist who caused the case to be reopened: “Why did you come here to make sure I only had one dog? I don’t have only that one, I also have another one that if you come back here, he’ll blow you up alive, do you understand?”
  • Finally, and most importantly, according to a geneticist appointed by the prosecutor’s office, there are DNA traces on Nada’s clothes that are compatible with the killer being a woman with a light complexion.

On December 20, 2023, the prosecutors formalized the c...

Hello everyone! I wanted to thank everyone for the outstanding attention my last writeup about Nefataree "Neffy" Bartell's case recieved, just wow! I'm hoping that Neffy's story will stay with some of the readers, and wouldn't it be cool if it helped with getting her case solved? But I digress.

Today I once again wanted to write about a disappearance where it's unknown what happened to the woman who went missing.

BACKGROUND

Laura Huebner was 45 when she went missing from Nanaimo, Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. She was, however, originally from Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

Before she disappeared, she was working three different jobs, her mother died just a few months earlier, and she was still fatigued after the COVID pandemic- It's no wonder that Laura decided to take a break and go to Victoria.

Laura worked in costumes and was very passionate about her job- Danika Wright, her friend of over 20 years, said that Laura was excited to be back from her break to work on a movie gig this summer. Danika says that, to her, this means that Laura wasn't intent on disappearing and leaving her old life behind.

Danika described Laura as "(...)high energy, really motivated and driven. She is so passionate about fashion and all the things that go with it".

DISAPPEARANCE

Laura was reported missing on the 29th of April, but she was last seen on the 24th, when she arrived at the Victoria International Airport from Regina through Saskatchewan. Laura wanted to travel to Nanaimo next; At first it was reported that Laura went there to see her friends, but later on it was revealed that her goal was to meet up with a man she met online.

Harry Huebner, Laura's father, said that she had booked a flight back home for the 28th, but she never boarded it.

During her stay, on the 25th, Laura sent Harry a photo taken on a boat. Laura's friend said that the man she met online offered Laura a date on his sailboat. After Laura was reported missing, Harry posted the photo online; Many people said that it looks like the photo was taken in Nanaimo. On the 2nd of May, a boat fitting the description was seen in Nanaimo docked near an RCMP vessel after it (the sailboat) was towed away.

During the investigation, RCMP didn't want to share if the towed boat has anything to do with Laura's case. All they've said was that they believe that she was in the Nanaimo area as of 24th.

The family said that it is out of character for Laura to go on without contacting her family for so long.

CONCLUSION

On the 3rd of May, news that a body washed at Protection Island in Nanaimo harbor sparked interest, as people wondered if it might belong to Laura. The body, however, belonged to a man who fell into the water on the 11th of April after a drunken argument with a woman who lived on a sailboat with him.

And that's sadly all that we know about Laura's case. I do certainly think that the man she was meeting with has something to do with her disappearance- the most obvious answer is that he killed her, perhaps on the boat, and hid her body, maybe tossed it into the lake. If the RCMP got the right boat and searched it, that must mean that Laura's body wasn't there, or at least it wasn't there permanently- the boat could've still been used to transport it. It's strange to me that nobody close to Laura seems to know anything about that man- did Laura never share even his name? I understand that she's an adult and is entitled to her secrets, but if she told Danika that she was meeting him and getting onto his boat, why didn't she say what was his name?

I don't know, I don't want to judge people in my writeups and I'm mostly speculating, but Laura's behavior seems a bit... Reckless? Meeting a man online, flying to meet him and getting on his small boat without saying anything specific to friends or family? This doesn't seem very safe. Again, I don't know, maybe Laura was that kind of person that rushes into things without thinking about them, or maybe she was in love with him and people in love do crazy things... Depending on what kind of person Laura was, this can be nothing new to her or potentially a sign of mental distress.

Other than that, I suppose that there's a chance that Laura was overwhelmed in her old life and decided to voluntarily disappear- she did seem to lead a taxing life and went through several hardships one after another, so maybe she saw escape as an option? Maybe she's living with the mysterious boat owner?

There's also a possibility of suicide, since that's always a possibility. Again, maybe she was exhausted from all the work and going through grief, plus it seems like COVID had some impact on her... She was in an unfamiliar place, which also sometimes impacts people who are in a bad frame of mind and pushes them towards behaviors they wouldn't exhibit at home, with friends and family around. Again, all of this is just speculation.

Laura Huebner was 45 when she went missing, so she would be about 46 now. She was a white woman, 5 ft 8 in (172 cm) and 140 lbs (63.5 kg), with blond hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white jacket and a white hoodie. If you have any informations about Laura's disappearance, contact Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, file number #2022-14432.

When writing a report on ‘Ireland’s Vanishing Triangle’ the first point of discussion should be the name. Ireland’s Vanishing Triangle is merely a term coined by the Irish media in the 1990s. The term has no relation to geographical profiling nor does it have any relevance to the actual cases.

There was a recent article printed in the Irish Times titled “The Myth of Ireland’s Vanishing Triangle”; yes in literal terms it is a myth. But- fortunately or unfortunately- the title will draw people’s attention, and thus bring attention to the unsolved cases. The serial killer case known as the Golden State Killer is an excellent example of this; the case had gone unsolved from the 1970s until as recently as 2018. During the 70s and 80s, the killer was given many different titles by the media, such as The East Area Rapist, The Original Nightstalker, The Diamond Knot Killer and perhaps most bizarrely the acronym EARONS. None of them managed to garner the attention of the wider public and media. Eventually in 2015, crime journalist Michelle McNamara gave the killer the title of the Golden State Killer, and the case became mainstream, and numerous documentaries, podcasts and TV shows were made.

Thankfully, the case was eventually solved by the brilliant Paul Holes and his team. It is clear that the title or term when referring to a series of unsolved crimes matters, although as humans the fact that our attention is more drawn to unsolved crimes with flashy titles than unsolved crimes with no title or an unappealing title, is hard for us to admit, as morally we all know that unsolved serious crimes deserve our equal attention. But, unfortunately human nature gets in the way of moral objectivity. Titles such as the Zodiac Killer and BTK have helped keep unsolved murders in the public eye for decades, and in the case of Jack the Ripper for well over a century.

Ireland’s Vanishing Triangle ‘usually’ refers to the unexplained disappearances of six young women in the East of Ireland between 1993 and 1998. However, the time span and number of cases has long been disputed. In the broadest of timelines the series could span from as far back as 1979 with the murder of Phillis Murphy and as recent as 2011 with the unexplained disappearance of Esra Uyrun covering a total of an estimated seventeen unsolved murders and disappearances. In several of these seventeen cases, arrests have been made, and three bodies have been found. The Gardi are certain that another three of the victims were killed by men known to them, but their remains have yet to be found. Two of the cases have strong suspects also known to the victim, but nobody has yet to be convicted for any of these murders and presumed murders.

For the purpose of this article, I will cover seven cases between the years of 1987 to 2003. Unlike the nine previously mentioned cases, there is no motive and the reason for their murder and presumed murder largely remains a mystery. Links on the nine cases I have decided not to include will be provided at the end of the article. The decision to discuss/include the seven specific cases is merely based on opinion which is 100% open to debate, and despite researching these cases for numerous years, I am still not certain on the timeline or the number of cases to include- which really gives you a quick insight into the complexities of these cases or series, as it is somewhat a case of ‘the more you know the less you know’. In relation to the seven as of yet unsolved cases I have decided to include, some arrests have been made, interviews conducted, and suspects uncovered, but most importantly nobody has been convicted in relation to these heinous crimes.

For the purpose of this article the cases will be laid out in chronological form.

July 1987

Antoinette Smith

Location: Dublin City/Glencullen Dublin and Wicklow Mountains

Antoinette Smith was a mother of two originally from Crumlin. By 1987, she was living in the South West Dublin suburb of Clondalkin with her two young children. Antoinette was dedicated to her children, and it seemed her life mostly revolved around them, which is credit to her character as she was only 27 years of age.

On Saturday the 11th of July 1987, Antoinette attended a David Bowie concert in Slane Castle, Co. Meath with a friend, having previously arranged to have her children babysat by their father Karl. By 11pm that evening both women had returned to Dublin City, where they attended the now closed La Mirage nightclub on Parnell Street. At roughly 2:30am Antoinette and her friend parted company on O’Connell Street. Antoinette had arranged to return to her friend’s house later that night, unfortunately though she never made it to the house. The last confirmed sighting of 27 year old Antoinette Smith was of her walking on O’Connell Street towards O’Connell Bridge sometime between 2:30am and 3am.

Sadly Antoinette’s body was found ten months later during April of 1988, by a young family, in an area of the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains known as Glendoo. Professor John Harbison concluded that Antoinette most likely died through asphyxiation as there was no sign of trauma. Shockingly two bags were found placed on Antoinette’s head with the inner bag knotted tightly around the neck, unfortunately due to decomposition Professor Harbison could not confirm whether the bags were placed on Antoinette before or after she died. Some of Antoinette’s personal items were recovered, but the black Texaco sports bag she had with her remains missing.

The gap in time from when Antoinette was reported missing and being found unfortunately gave her killer or killers a head start on authorities. And to this day they have yet to be brought to justice. For justifiable reasons Antoinette’s ex-husband Karl is rightfully not considered a suspect.

December 1991

Patricia Doherty

Location: Tallaght/Dublin and Wicklow Mountains

Like Antoinette Smith Patricia Doherty was a young mother of two. Patricia was originally from Co. Kerry, but by 1991 she was living in the sprawling South West Dublin Suburb of Tallaght with her husband Patrick and children. Patricia had recently started a job as prison guard in Mount Joy Prison having previously worked as a secretary at a local school.

Shortly after 9pm on the 23rd of December, Patricia returned to her home in Allenton Lawns after a long day shopping and running errands throughout Tallaght, mostly in preparation for Christmas. At roughly 9:15pm Patricia decided to go back out to shop at a nearby shopping centre known as Old Bawn. However, there was no reported sighting of Patricia at the shops after 9:15pm. There was though two witness reports one stating that 29 year old Patricia was seen walking in the direction of the Old Bawn Shopping Centre shortly after 9pm. The second witness report was of a woman matching Patricia’s description entering a red car outside of the Old Bawn Shopping Centre.

Shockingly there has been no other reported sightings of Patricia Doherty and it seemed as if she had vanished with little or no trace. On Christmas Day, Patricia was reported missing by her husband Patrick at Tallaght Garda Station.

Some six months later on the 21st of June 1992 a man was cutting turf in an area of the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains known as Glassmucky Breaks when sadly he found Patricia’s body buried in a bog which had collapsed due to prolonged dry weather. Patricia Doherty was found less than mile from Antoinette Smith. Professor John Harbison concluded that Patricia had died through asphyxiation.

It is now almost 32 years since Patricia was last seen alive, and nobody has been convicted for her heinous murder. And Patricia’s family remains without answers.

March 1993

Annie McCarrick

Location: Sandymount/Dublin and Wicklow Mountains.

Annie McCarrick was a 26 year American student living in South Dublin at the time of her disappearance. Annie had previously lived in Ireland between 1987 and 1990 but decided to fully relocate to Ireland in early 1993, from her home town of Bayport Long Island. After college Annie planned to be a school teacher.

At roughly 11am on Friday the 26th of March Annie McCarrick left her apartment in St Catherine’s Court in Dublin’s Sandymount to visit a supermarket and the bank. Whilst visiting the bank and shops, Annie phoned some friends from a payphone and told them about her plans to visit Enniskerry in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains that day. At 3pm Annie returned to her apartment and left again at 3:15pm; for some unknown reason Annie did not unpack her food shopping despite it containing perishable ingredients.

Annie was later spotted boarding the number 44 bus heading for Enniskerry by a former work colleague. There was two unconfirmed sightings of Annie McCarrick in Enniskerry that evening- one in a post office and another in a café known as Poppies. A further sighting of Annie was reported later that evening in pub called Johnny Fox’s at 9:30pm again, though this sighting cannot be fully confirmed. However, these are the last reported sightings of Annie. To this day she has yet to be found.

On the 30th anniversary of Annie’s disappearance it was announced that the case had been upgraded to a murder investigation. And the investigation will now focus on the Sandymount area where Annie lived. It now also seems that an individual known to Annie has been ...

Garry Altman, a 66-year-old man recently convicted of murder in a 1996 cold case, has died, but not before delivering a disturbing death bed confession to police.

Investigators identified Artman, who was a commercial trucker for 20-plus years, as a suspect in the 1996 stabbing/strangulation death of 30-year-old Sharon Hammock in August 2022 through DNA and genetic genealogy. Sharon, a sex worker, was found bound and wrapped in a blanket on the side of the road Oct. 3, 1996, near 76th Street and Kraft Avenue in Caledonia Township, Michigan. She was pregnant when she died.

Artman went to trial in September 2022 and was convicted of her murder on September 28, 2022. He was sentenced in October to life in prison without parole.

After a cancer diagnosis in June 2023, Artman fell unconscious and went into a coma. He was expected to die in mid December 2023, however, in an expected twist, Artman recently woke from the coma. and in a death bed confession, admitted to the murders of 11 women, many of them sex workers, who went missing or were found dead in metro Grand Rapids between 1993 and 1996. He also confessed to the murders of Sharon Hammack in 1996, the only killing of which Artman was ever actually convicted, and the murder of 24-year-old Dusty Shuck.

Dusty was found beaten and stabbed to death near a truck stop off I-70 in Maryland on May 4, 2006. DNA recently linked Artman to the case, though his terminal cancer prognosis made a trial a long shot.

His confession also included Cathleen Dennis, who was last seen in Grand Rapids in 1995.

From Charley Project:

“Cathleen Dennis was last seen in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 10, 1995. She and her sister, both of them sex workers, had traveled there from Omaha, Nebraska a few days earlier and gotten a hotel room. That night they had a few drinks at a nightclub, then parted ways to find clients.

Dennis's sister saw her once during the night, getting into a light-colored Chevrolet, possibly a 1965-1968 model, at Division Avenue and Putnam Street Southwest. At 4:00 a.m., when she was ready to quit work, she could not find Dennis. She has never been heard from again.

There's a theory that Dennis's disappearance is related to the disappearances and murders of other women who were involved in the local commercial sex industry in 1995. No links have been established between the cases, however. Dennis's case remains unsolved.”

This is an ongoing story. I will update as more information becomes available.

similar to joshua maddux. a teenager is found found skeletenized in a secret room in his school where students frequently gathered to skip classe, smoke, etc in an odd position seemingly from falling down into the room. his first name and last name started with the same letter, if that helps. it was maybe early 90's?

Original Title: In April of 1999, 38 year old and 9 month pregnant Roberta Johnson was discovered dead in a shallow grave in Ocala, Florida. She had died from blunt force trauma to the head, and suffered a severe beating. Who killed Roberta Johnson?

Typically, I cover cases from Arizona, but for the next 41 write ups, I will be covering one case from each state in alphabetical order. Today will be a case from Florida.

In April of 1999, thirty eight year old Ocala, Florida native Roberta Vivian Johnson was busy preparing for a huge life event- she was mere days away from giving birth to a baby boy. Roberta was excited to add on to her family, eager to share the excitement and joy with only daughter, seventeen year old Arkeisha Johnson, whom she considered her best friend. Though Roberta had only one daughter at the time, she was well acquainted with what it took to deal with multiple children at a time: Roberta was a former middle school teacher who specifically worked with troubled children. On top of that, she has also spent time in the United States Army- and, at the time of her death, Roberta had been employed as a bus driver. Sadly, aside from her employment history, there wasn’t a lot of information available about the actual life of Roberta Johnson: her likes and dislikes, her daily activities, her personality or favorite color or meal, for example, have never been shared- only day the days and circumstances leading up to her murder have been reported on.

On April 24, 1999, Roberta Johnson had quite a busy day. She started her morning out by driving Arkeisha to Ocala High School, so her daughter could attend her Saturday morning classes in preparation for graduation, before driving Arkesiha’s boyfriend to his own home and dropping him off. After these errands, Roberta returned home and phoned her mother. Roberta spoke of an appointment that she had at a local Winn Dixie at 10 a.m., and while she never divulged who this mystery appointment was with, Roberta’s mother assumed it was with Drayton Florence Sr- a friend of Roberta’s and a fellow member of the United State’s Army. While it was never officially concluded, and Roberta never conclusively linked him, everyone in Roberta’s life assumed that Drayton was the father of Roberta’s unborn baby boy.

Days later, on April 26th, Roberta was officially reported missing by her family when she never returned home after her appointment at the local Winn Dixie. That same day, a local policeman noticed something strange in the 6400 block of North West 44th Avenue- there was some freshly upturned dirt off the side of the road on the popular lover’s lane, with a Chevrolet truck hood covering the disturbed soil. Sadly, Roberta’s body was lying in the 4 foot shallow grave, where she had been dead for days. Roberta had suffered a severe beating, and had died from blunt force trauma to the back of her head. Sargent Clint Smith, supervisor of the Marion County Cold Case unit, has this to say about the discovery of Roberta’s body:

”To be able to brutally murder somebody like this, to literally beat her to death and then discard of her in a shallow grave, leave her there, while she was nine months pregnant. She was days away from having this child. So for somebody to be able to do something like that, to me that's the worst of the worst."

Roberta’s car was discovered in the parking lot of the Winn Dixie which she had her meeting that Saturday morning. When witnesses were spoken to, they recall having seen Roberta there, accompanied by a man who had been shaking his fists at her while they spoke. The witnesses had said an altercation was clearly happening, and when they were spoken to a second time, they positively identified the man as Drayton Florence Sr.

The men in Roberta’s life were spoken to next, including Florence Sr. Investigators discovered that a few men had personal relationships with Roberta, and while each of them were spoken to, including her estranged ex-husband, it was discovered that they had all been out of the Ocala area on the day of the murder, having either been in nearby Orlando, or Tampa. Only Florence Sr. had still been in Ocala. Florence Sr. was said to be non-cooperative when it came to the investigation, and it was reported that Florence Sr. was asking fellow colleagues to switch his government issued vehicle with theirs, perhaps in an effort to confuse investigators. However, Florence’s car was in fact tracked down, and when it was combed for evidence it was discovered that the car had traces of amniotic fluid as well as vaginal discharge on the fabric seats. Florence attempted to explain these discoveries away, stating that Roberta had sat in his car the Friday prior to her disappearance, and that he was at work the Saturday morning that she disappeared- that of which his coworkers could corroborate.

Drayton Florence Sr also had motive. If the baby boy was indeed his, this would be his third child outside of his marriage. The other two mothers- one only a 19 year old woman who conceived his child in the back of his government issued car- had already taken Florence to court for child support. It is said that Florence Sr. may have been worried about Roberta also taking Florence Sr. to court for child support, and putting his pension, let alone his marriage, at risk.

Despite having a promising suspect, the murder of Roberta Vivian Johnson, and her unborn child, has never been resolved. Had her son been born, he would have turned 25 years old this year, and Roberta, 63. When interviewed for the Ocala Star Banner in 2016, Arkesiha, who is now a nurse and a mother herself, had this to say about the deaths of her mother and brother:

”The person who killed my mom, he took away my best friend. … He took away a part of my heart. And it's unfair to my mom and unfair to my unborn brother, to me and my family, for someone to be so mean and take away her life and still walk around free.”

Editing to add: due to some very helpful commenters, it was discovered through articles that Florence Sr. was NOT the father to the unborn child. Thank you for those who dug up that info!

Buried at the edge of a Chicago Catholic cemetery are an elderly person's remains marked only by a cement cylinder deep in the ground labeled with the numbers 04985. The person died in 2015 at a nursing home not remembering much, including their own name.

They went by Seven.

Now police specializing in missing people and cold cases have discovered Seven's identity in one of the most unusual investigations the Cook County sheriff's office has pursued and one that could change state law. Using post-mortem fingerprints, investigators identified Seven as 75-year-old Reba C. Bailey, an Illinois veteran missing since the 1970s.

After being arrested for the 1975 murder of his neighbor Martha Moxley in the early 2000's, Michael Skakel spent 11 years in prison. However, on appeal, his conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court of Connecticut in 2018, on the grounds that his defense lawyer failed to present evidence of an alibi (that he was watching a movie with friends at the time of the murder). The state prosecutor declined to retry him in 2020.

Coming from a wealthy and well-connected family, Michael Skakel has had the benefit of good legal representation in his appeal (though not, apparently, in the initial trial). You wonder how many other people without the resources he has are currently languishing in prison after trials that were less than fair. Of course, you could look at Michael's case and say he got away with murder. The overturn of his conviction was narrow (a 4-3 opinion on the supreme court), and in their dissent some of the justices dismissed his alibi, saying that even if it was true, the exact time of death of Martha Moxley was not established with certainty and could have taken place any time over the course of that night.

Michael Skakel seems to point the finger at his brother Tommy for the murder, based on Tommy being allegedly romantically involved with Martha. Sadly, it does not look like Martha Moxley's family will see justice for her death. I don't know much about this case, so I'm happy to read any information or opinions you all may have about this tragic crime.

I was writing a research paper on the accuracy of facial reconstructions in unidentified persons cases, when I stumbled upon a case that is very local to me. This will be my first case writeup ever, so bear with me. Constructive critique very welcome.

Poland's Olsztyn John Doe was a man estimated to be around 15-17 years old, found in Olsztyn's Lake Krzywe (also known as Lake Ukiel) on 10th July 1999. His cause of death is stated to be drowning, no more than 3 days prior. He was found to have dark blonde hair, and stood at around 175 cms (5'9).

This one hit particularly close to home, as I had spent nearly every summer since I was a child playing and swimming in that very lake.

To provide context, the Warmian-Masurian Voievodeship, to which Olsztyn is the capital, is known as a popular vacation spot with lakes counted in the hundreds, and numerous forests. During the holiday season tourists from all over Poland gather both in the smaller villages, and in the larger cities, such as aformentioned Olsztyn, but also Mrągowo, Elbląg, Ostróda, and many others. The tourists included both the wealthy who use the network of lakes and canals for sailing, as well as younger people, high school- and collage-aged, often associated with Harcerstwo (Scouts), who would travel by cheap means like trains, hitchhiking, bicycling, or sometimes straight up walking on foot, sleeping either in cheap youth hotels, or in tents.

Out of sheer curiosity, through the Itaka Foundation's website (Polish equivalent of NamUs) I looked around for missing person cases aggregated from all over Poland looking for information that would line up, and I was surprised to find someone who could be a potential match.

  • Translated to English

Maciej Piotr Jóźwiak was a 21 year old man last seen in Elbląg (around 2 hours by car/train away from Olsztyn). He was 178 cms tall (5'10), just an inch taller than Olsztyn Doe, had dark blonde hair as seen on his photo, which also matches up to the Doe in question, and his eyes were reported to be gray. Taking the facial disfiguration that can be caused by spending several days in water into account, the reconstruction bears a similarity to his facial features.

The only caveat is that Jóźwiak was reported missing/last seen (distinction unclear) on 22nd October 1999, over three months after the discovery of Doe's body. I was looking around the newspaper archives from that region on the surrounding dates and there were no mentions of any missing person reports, with the only information source on his case being the Itaka page, and a brief mention in a local newspaper article about missing persons. [EN]

The long time gap can be possibly explained by the possibility that his family, or whoever else reported him missing, possibly assumed he might have taken an extended vacation, and which was very likely at his age went hitchhiking around the country and didn't stay in touch, or maybe they assumed he willingly ran away or something. His missing report date would also mark around 3 weeks from the start of the academic school year, which at his age, assuming he attended a university, was an understandable time frame to realize something might be wrong beyond just an extended vacation. Maybe he got separated from a friend group early on during such a trip and they assumed he went on with his vacation on his own, not caring about staying in touch with them. Not to mention that the police was severely (and still is) underfunded, at the time mostly focused on local criminal activities which were rampant in 90s Poland, so they likely just didn't care about it enough to check for any possible UID matches outside of their own municipality.

A lot of assumptions had to be made in order for this to fit, but they are far from unlikely. Once again, this is my first case write-up ever, so I'm sorry if it's not up to quality standard, I hope I'm not the only person who sees this correlation.

Original Title: Pregnant woman leaves her home to embark on a hike in snow with her dog to a cabin that no longer exists; Her remains are found nearby after a few months- What happened to Nefataree "Neffy" Bartell and her child? (2023)

Hello everyone! As always, thank you for your comments and upvotes on my previous post about Monique Boamah. I hope that her case will be solved soon and that her family and friends will get some answers.

Today's case is a bit different than the ones I usually cover, because the body of the victim has been found, however we don't know how exactly did she die.

BACKGROUND

Nefataree "Neffy", "Nef" Bartell was 26 when she went missing in Missoula, Montana, USA. She graduated from Big Sky High School and described herself as an "Adult Entrepreneur".

She was younger of two siblings. Charlene Bartell, Neffy's mother, said that her daughter spend a lot of time growing up "(...) river rafting, hiking in the mountains, fishing (...) I would teach her how to drive in the mountains when she was younger" and that Neffy always enjoyed everything Missoula had to offer.

Neffy was a mother of two sons (3 and 8 years old) and was pregnant (7th month) when she went missing. Neffy liked to meet up with her friends, but her priorities have changed once she became a mother. According to Charlene, "Neffy loved taking care of her kids"; She was excited about having her new baby, and motherhood was important to her. Neffy didn't know her baby's gender and didn't have a name picked out, but she felt that it's going to be a girl.

In February, Neffy lived in an apartment she was renting with her younger son. The older one lived with his father full-time.

Neffy's mother described her daughter as "(...) very smart, very intelligent, very loving and caring". Her friend, Melissa Drake, described her as "(...) always smiling, always so upbeat; She always had a smile on her face".

DISAPPEARANCE

The last time Charlene spoke to Neffy was on the 15th of February. They were discussing Neffy's move to Condon, Montana, about an hour away from Missoula, so that the two (and Neffy's youngest son too I presume) would live together. She was allegedly excited for the move. They weren't in contact for a few weeks after that, which didn't concern Charlene, since her daughter was an adult and she didn't have to contact her if she didn't want to. Then, on the 9th of March, Charlene recieved a call from Detective Jeff Lloyd of the Missoula Police Department, that Neffy's friend contected them about not seeing her for a month. Neffy's youngest son has been staying with his paternal grandparents since the 20th of February- they haven't heard from Neffy either. That was the longest she ever went without contacting her son.

Neffy was reported missing on the 8th of March, but she was allegedly last seen on the 6th, in the afternoon- that sighting, however, was proven to be unsubstantiated, and she was actually last seen in person on the 21st of February in the early afternoon, near Gold Creek and Highway 200, about 17 miles (27 km) away from Missoula. Neffy's mother said that her daughter "Never goes there". She also said that she would never abandon her two sons.

Neffy was last seen there with her dog, Nova, walking eastbound on MT Hwy 200 E in East Missoula. It was snowing quite heavily, and a woman offered Neffy and Nova a ride. Neffy requested a ride to a cabin she located on an online map in the area of Primrose Meadows up Gold Creek Rd to meet with her boyfriend- this cabin no longer exists; In fact, it was demolished some time before Neffy's disappearance. The woman dropped Neffy and Nova off at a mile marker off Gold Creek Road around 3 p.m, but she said in an interview that she "had a bad feeling" about Neffy's hike. She immediately called the sherrif's office to request a wellness check. It wasn't carried out.

Charlene searched Neffy's apartment and found her keys, wallet, phone and apple watch. There ws also a pizza on the counter with one slice missing. The doors to the apartment weren't locked, which concerned Charlene even more, since Neffy was "paranoid" about keeping them closed.

Nova was found in the mountains on Gold Creek Road on March 1. She was well-nourished and didn't have any frostbite- Charlene suspects that Nova might've been housed by somebody who looked after her for eight days before she was found. Neffy wasn't located.

An aerial search and rescue effort was launched near the Gold Creek area. The person who spoke to Neffy on the 21st of February was interviewed by police, as was Neffy's inner circle. The proper search, however, could've only been carried at the end of April- the snow that has been making the search effort nearly impossible has melted and the on-foot searches could be carried out. In the meantime, all the leads have run dry.

On the afternoon of the 4th of May, Montana FWP personnel that was carrying out a search at Gold Creek found a few scraps of clothing. After calling 911, the search and rescue managed to locate human remains found off Gold Creek Rd. in Missoula. The clothing and remains have been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Missoula for identification and finding the cause of death. It was confirmed that they belonged to Neffy.

CONCLUSION

If the cause of death has been established, it wasn't released. It's unclear if Neffy's baby was found with her but I'd assume so; I feel like if it wasn't there, this information would be given out to the public. Neffy was in the seventh month, and a seven months old fetus could survive outside of the womb, but it would require some very specific care in a hospital. So if Neffy was murdered for her baby police would want to locate the child.

We don't know if Neffy was murdered or perhaps perished due to harsh weather. Most people would have issues with a hike in deep snow, even without the pregnancy; It's possible that she got hypothermia and died due to that. The scraps of clothing can potentially be a sign of paradoxical undressing, a phenomenon where people in advanced state of hypothermia start to undress due to feeling hot despite freezing. Of course there's also a chance that wild animals ripped up her clothes to feed on her remains (sorry to be so graphic).

I couldn't find any info on Neffy's boyfriend or the father of her third child- was it even the same person? He's not mentioned in any articles by name. If he is real and wanted to meet up with Neffy at the destroyed cabin, why would he do that? We don't know if the cabin had any meaning for Neffy or him; That's certainly an odd place to meet up with your heavily pregnant girlfriend. The main reason for death of pregnant people is domestic violence, usually from the hands of the partner- there's a pretty significant possibility that Neffy was killed by her boyfriend, again, if he's real.

Also, is it just me, or did Neffy seem... Not in the right frame of mind? She left all of her belongings like purse or phone at home, didn't lock her doors despite usually being very mindful of that, and wanted to hike down a road in heavy snow to a cabin that doesn't exist? I don't know, something about it feels like she might've had an undiagnosed mental illness. Maybe her pregnancy influenced her brain chemistry? I don't know enough to suggest a specific diagnosis, but I know that pregnancy can sometimes influence mental health. Of course, she might've had a mental illness unrelated to pregnancy.

If you have any info on the circumstances regarding the death of Nefataree "Neffy" Vakneekwa Bartell, call the Missoula County Sheriffs Office at (406) 258-4810 (case number2023-3656) or the Missoula Police Department at (406) 552-6303 (case number 2023-9106).

Who?

Mary Flanagan was a hardworking sixteen year old girl, having a job at a Tate & Lyle sugar refinery, an occasional job at an opticians, attending school at Holbrook Road Secondary School, and also volunteering for the Blind Association. Born on the 9th June 1943 to Irish Catholic parents, Mary lived in West Ham, London, England with her parents, sisters, and brother, and was by all accounts a bright, confident, and friendly young woman. At the time of her disappearance on New Year's Eve 1959, Mary was 5'2" (157cm) and of medium build, with wavy brown hair and hazel eyes.

What?

Mary was due to attend the staff New Years party at the Tate & Lyle sugar refinery where she worked. On 31st December 1959 at about 1PM she dressed in a checked skirt, red knitted coat, and heels, slung a basket over her arm, and gave her family one final wave as she headed to West Ham tube station to travel to the party.

The next day, Mary's parents reported her missing to the police after she failed to return home from the party.

The Investigation

At this point, it was discovered that Mary hadn't attended work for two weeks - as recently as 2013, relatives still didn't know what she'd been doing during that period instead. The investigation was largely 'old-fashioned' police work, because it was January 1st, 1960 - DNA and most modern forensics were not yet a possibility. Searches were made of the local area, and there was some coverage in local newspapers, but little came from this.

One lead which quickly came to light was Mary's boyfriend, an Irish man in his 20's who worked in the Merchant Navy. Mary's father had introduced the two, and they'd been known to be seeing one another for some time before Mary's disappearance. Unfortunately, he couldn't be found - indeed, even his name turned out to be a mystery. It was thought to be 'Tom McGinty', but no Tom McGinty could be found working for the Merchant Navy, and it was considered that his surname could have been something similar but different, like 'McEntee' or 'McGuinness'. As of 2013, Tom McGinty still hadn't been tracked down to be questioned.

The thing with Tom was that no one seemed quite sure what he was to Mary. Some say fiance (though there was no ring), some say boyfriend, but others say that she was close to breaking up with him. Their last known interaction was a bitter argument - Tom had told Mary that he lived with a landlady, but it turned out he instead lived with his mother. This lie lead to an argument, with Mary crying and 'raised voices' between Tom, Mary, and Mary's father. Indeed, on the morning of 31st December 1959, Mary slept in late, something she didn't typically do.

No clues were found in the immediate aftermath, but long term plans were put into place to look out for Mary. Her National Insurance number (essentially the same as a Social Security number in the USA) had a trace placed on it, but it has never been used by anyone working within the UK since. The Salvation Army were checked with, too. At some point, her case became inactive due to lack of evidence.

2013 Re-Opening

To coincide with Mary's 70th birthday, her case was officially reopened and reexamined in 2013, bringing new publicity to her case - a case which happens to be the longest-running open missing person's case on the Metropolitan Police's records.

At this point, Mary's younger sister Brenda (who was eight at the time of Mary's disappearance) stated that she believed Mary was still alive. She offered the theory that Mary had been pregnant, which for an unmarried Irish Catholic teenage girl in 1959 would have been completely socially unacceptable (read about the Magdalene Laundries for more surrounding context), and so her and Tom had eloped to escape potential shame. Brenda noted that Mary had kissed all of them goodbye the day she left, suggesting that she knew she wasn't going to come back.

In 2013, Brenda's DNA was entered into UK databases, so that it could be compared against unidentified remains - given the passage of time and evolution of forensics, presumably DNA from Mary was wholly unavailable, and so her sister's was the best available. From what is publicly available, there have been no potential matches.

There has been no update on Mary's case since 2013. If she is still alive, she is 80 years old.

Theories

As previously discussed, Mary's family have theorised she could have been pregnant and so eloped with her boyfriend/fiance Tom McGinty to escape the shame.

Given that Tom McGinty also hasn't been traced (as of 2013), and his identity is indeed unconfirmed, my thoughts stray to murder and/or suicide. Did Tom end Mary's life, and then his own? Did he end her life and then vanish, living under a different name? Was "Tom McGinty" his real name? The mystery surrounding Tom and what role he could have played is something the police emphasise in their 2013 reappeal.

Of course, there are many other possibilities. Mary could have killed herself, her body somewhere unfound or washed away. Mary could have been kidnapped, attacked, or murdered in an entirely unrelated situation, though this feels less likely to me given her absence from work and argument with Tom. There are thousands of possible explanations for why Mary walked away to get the tube on the 31st December 1959 and now, 64 years and 1 day later, is still missing.

So, I was researching legendary creatures when I came across this blog post:

The author informs us that an explorer named Percy Fawcett, while exploring the Amazon, gained knowledge of a plateau that the Waikás Indians (a group of Yanomami) call "Kurupira". Percy then told about this plateau to his friend Conan Doyle, who wrote the book "The Lost World" inspired by Kurupira. All author information comes from another author, a Theco author called "Jaroslav Mares", who visited Brazil to research Kurupira.

The Indians believe that 3 monsters inhabit this plateau: Stoa, Suwa and Washorie. Stoa resembles the Carnotaurus dinosaur, Suwa resembles a long-necked dinosaur, and Washoriwe resembles a pterosaur.

I contacted a friend and author of books on legendary creatures, Ben Tejada Ingam, and we began to research this plateau further. We discovered that there is actually a large elevation where Jaroslav tells us where Kurupira is, this area is called "Cerro Delgado Chalbaud" in Venezuela. But, it may not actually be a plateau, just a mountain, which looks like a plateau when viewed from below. I contacted a professor here in Brazil who is mentioned in a book by Jaroslav, and he confirmed that Jaroslav contacted him about Kurupira, so I doubt that Jaroslav is making it all up. We also found old maps where they show "Kurupira", where Jaroslav tells us where Kurupira is located, but written with a "c":

As for the creatures, we tried to contact some Yanomami Indians on Instagram, but without success, however, a friend told us that he worked with the Yanomami and they told him about giant creatures that cut down trees, and compared them to a whale that walks on land. .A dinosaur?

I would like to know if anyone has knowledge on this subject, but me and my friend really need someone who knows Yanomami mythology to confirm if the creatures do really exist in their mythology or at least something similar to them.
