I see the phrase 'ahead of it's time' used a lot like a long with words such as 'underrated' or 'epic' or 'literally', or 'ironic'. I read how ahead of it's time is used for literally any popular game that it alters the meaning of the phrase.

Anyways here is a list of games I feel would have sold or been more known had they been released several years in the future:

  • Jurassic Park Trespasser: the YouTube channel ResearchIndicates and one of the most informative Let's Play videos of all time best explains this game.

JPT had a rather ambitious physics engine AND open world environments which seemed pretty much undoable at the time, along with non gameplay breaking story flow with Attenborough himself. But just like with No Man's Sky the hype engine and promising too much got the devs way over their heads and failed. Valve was able to continue what JPT started with Half Life, but I imagine if it had more time JPT could have been an immersive classic.

  • Time Splitters Future Perfect an FPS with sharable Map Creation content. The problem I feel was many people didn't try this as Halo's Forge wasn't out yet to bring to light what user content can really do, and less accessible online play at the time.

  • Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 Okay this doesn't count, but I just want to mention this because the official Sony Network Adapter wasn't even out yet when this released. You have to use a specific brand of Linksys or D-Link USb to Ethernet adapter on your PS2 to get it to work 😄. So I classify this ahead of it's time due to the first party product not existing yet.

  • Psychonauts. This was an easy one, non Mario platformers weren't the trend among the ocean of best selling Xbox titles. Thankfully A Hat In Time much later showed the more mainstream appeal of small dev platformers.

  • Dragon Quest 1 & 5 in the US. Not in Japan as you could shut down Japan for a day with the release of a new Dragon Quest game (tip for invaders). DQ has always struggled in the US partly due to, oddly enough, taking so long to reach the US. It's a mix of too early and too late, with DQ 1 inventing the traditional console RPG format, and DQ5 being Pokemon before Pokemon, to quote Tim Rogers. But early DQ games releasing far too late on the NES life and not releasing on SNES I feel could have made DQ games closer to FF games in the US

Fallout 4's announcement was a breath of fresh air after years of game trailers with exponentially long delays. It was the first time in the video game industry that we were experiencing multiple year periods between the announcement and release.

When Bethesda put up a countdown clock on their website in June, we had no idea that what we were going to be shown would release in November of the same year.

I think the whole industry changed its outlook on announcement windows from how much hype came from not just the announcement that a new Fallout was coming for the new console gen, but the excitement that we'd actually be able to play it within only a few months.

IMO the RPG elements were not as nice after having played The Witcher 3 just a few months prior, but the feeling of being the wanderer in a wasteland was still very cool and I enjoyed the building additions.

The Pip Boy might have been a bit of a flop, but the application itself was still a cool novelty addition to the game for 2015. I do wish that second screen applications had grown and gotten better, but it appears they needed to be good from the start for wide adoption.

The colour palate was massive improvement over the beige green and browns from the PS3/360 generation, I still have no idea why so many games used to have no colour to them.

There aren't that many games that have as much of a mod scene like Bethesdas games, if you don't already have the game and are going to buy it, get it on PC if you can. Also make sure to buy the GOTY Edition with all the DLC, as there are many mods that are dependent on all of the content.

I would also avoid the Creation Club and get accustomed to the NexusMods page, you should download and setup Vortex Mod Manager which handles mods fairly well.

Best Fallout 4 mods 2023

In order for mods to work on the PS4, within Sony's required limitations, mods themselves on consoles can't be much more than short in code length. So the Creation Club which was designed for consoles does not host the same quality in library.

Fallout 4 got an 88% on OpenCritic with one reviewer saying this;

Bethesda has created another game you can lose your life in. New experiences just keep coming, and you always have another perk to unlock. ~ Game Informer

The game with all DLC is -75% on Steam at $9.99 for the next week, even cheaper in my region with AUD.

This game was such a mixed experience. I loved the anime and decided to try one of the Visual Novels to see more of this world I came to love. When I looked at ratings on VNDB. It was a 50/50 between 6/10 and 8/10. Of course, ratings aren’t a defining factor if you will enjoy it or not. But a plot like that was really telling that this was an experience you either enjoyed or didn’t. So how did I find the game?

Well initially I really enjoyed the experience. It’s set a day before the cultural festival. With you playing as Kyon having to finish the film, he helps Haruhi record during the original Manga. As the game continues you get to meet and interact with many of the characters from the show. While these are mostly main characters. Some background characters do make an appearance as well with short interactions.

However, where this game sets itself apart from other visual novel experiences is a mechanic that allows for a question-and-answer type minigame between each character. In these scenes you were given a list of dialogue options. With you being encouraged to choose statements that each character would enjoy. For example, Haruhi will have a positive reaction towards statements praising her work or related to supernatural things. While she will have negative reactions to negative statements about her interests or the SOS brigade. There is a hidden ranking system to each conversation, and these will affect your outcomes of the story.

That initially surprised me. You are almost encouraged to fish for negative reactions because it changes how the story plays out. But for the true ending this generally is not advised. An ending I didn’t get and don’t feel the motivation to get for reasons I’ll say later.

Now the thing is that’s really all I can say about the gameplay. If you enjoy the world and characters of the game, then initially this could be a positive experience. Until the final act there isn’t much of a story, but these are entirely new interactions with these characters that you have control over to some extent. However, the largest issue is mentioned in the title.

When you think of the Anime for this series what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For most it’s the endless eight. It’s probably the most notorious stunt performed in animation. For people reading this who aren’t aware. The second season of the anime this game is based on had 8 episodes of what was largely the same episode without any major change. Unsurprisingly fans were upset, and this became a whole controversy. I’m sure you can piece together the issue here.

The game goes for up to 7 days and each day is a time loop. Now at first this does feel like a blessing. You get multiple chances at interactions with characters. You don’t need to save scum to experience all the dialogue. The issue is that by day 3 it’s entirely the same conversations with only a few scenes changing. Ironically it only took me 6 hours to beat this game simply because by about day 4 it’s just auto skipping dialogue for almost the entire day. This is not fun. Like at all.

For people who want to play this. If you play this, I recommend a guide so you can get the good ending. It’s the most interesting ending and all the time looping will probably make you sick of seeing the exact same conversation 4 times over.

spoilerI’ve not seen every ending. But there is one that’s particularly bad. There’s an ending where everything is declared as a dream and then the game just ends. Ironically this was the one I got so it felt like I had just wasted 6 hours for nothing.

At least you get unlockables as the game continues. Some of them were a little strange. One is an alarm clock where Nagato will count until a certain hour and then alert you. She can also wish you a happy birthday. I find this funny because I don’t think the PSP has a battery life long enough for any of that to ever be used. But I hope someone out there had Nagato wish them a happy birthday. There’s way more that’s just the only one I played around with. Infact because we are on Lemmy I can show a Screenshot of this.

So, yea time looping is not a fun mechanic. Maybe once but this game goes for 7 days. I don’t know who thought it was a good idea to base an entire game around the most controversial thing from your media. But outside of this issue. It’s enjoyable to have a Haruhi VN experience that lets you interact with the characters in a more open and casual way. Next, I think I’ll try the PS2 one. My Japanese isn’t fantastic but that one seems to have a lot more fun with itself so maybe that will be a more positive experience.

This game is amazing and stunningly beautiful even on older hardware. It runs surprisingly well on my older gaming laptop. The game really encourages me to try different things too. I'll be playing this for a while still, much to do.

Next up also picked up on sale though is Outer Worlds, I'm excited for that.

Hey guys! My name is cod, I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know there's a change in the mod team now. As you probably know, the creator of this community decided to leave and made a post asking if anyone would be interested in taking over. Long story short, I got the gig, as did another member by the name of BrionGloid. We're in two different time zones so hopefully that will allow at least one of us to be available at any given time. You may also notice another mod here, by the name of BurntWits, that's my alt I use on this instance, so that way if there's any federation issues between my home instance and the one this community is on, I'll still be able to moderate effectively. As that is a backup account, I'd request any messages to me go to the cod account, as I check that one much more frequently.

On another note, if anyone has any questions, concerns, or suggestions regarding the change in mod team, the future of the community, or anything else, drop a comment! Or if you'd prefer, my inbox is always open, so feel free to send me a message. I'm in EST and do work full-time shift work, so it may take a few hours for me to respond depending on the time you're messaging and/or commenting. I believe BrionGloid is in Australia.

Your new community mod, cod

Every now and then I go back through the Arkham games and I’m reminded of how well they were made.

Asylum and City were definitely my favourites, but Knight was really good too, and honestly even if you don’t count Origins, it’s still a really fun game regardless. Certainly not as good as the trilogy but it’s still fun to me, anyway.

City was my first, and I played a ton of it back in the day, so it holds a special place in my heart, but I think Asylum is probably my favourite if I remove the nostalgia goggles. It’s just so well made. I know a lot of people who have never played Asylum, and that’s a real shame.

Do you guys have any fond memories playing through any of the Arkham games? Which one is your favourite? Let me know, I’d love to discuss them.

(Re-upload)

I’ve been playing CoD games since MW2 (though never the campaign), so I missed CoD4MW1, and after finding it for really cheap at my local used games store, I decided to pick it up and try it out. Despite being 2007, it looks great still. Mind you, I don’t care much about graphics, but I can still appreciate if something has aged well, and imo it still looks great. The mechanics are awesome too, and it’s super fun. The storyline was of course quite linear for the most part, but the missions were a ton of fun and I liked the characters. I’m now going through the rest of the MW series campaigns, and then I’m gonna go through the Black Ops campaigns, because MW1 impressed me that much. MW2 so far is a lot of fun too, but imo doesn’t quite compare to the ghillie mission or the AC130 (I think?) mission. If you’ve never played it before because, like me, you heard CoD games don’t have great campaigns, ignore those people and play through it. It’s a ton of fun, and that’s what video games are supposed to be

I had played Dishonored 2 about a year after it was first released, and it was a lot of fun. I love stealth games and I really liked the take it had on the genre. So a couple months ago when I saw the first one had a steam sale I decided to pull the trigger and I’m glad I did. Man, this game is good! I’ve played through it twice now, and I just started the Knife of Dunwall DLC. I’m really enjoying the unique art style, and I think I prefer the general feel to that of the second game.

If you haven’t given this one a shot yet I’d highly recommend it. It still looks incredible and it feels super smooth to play.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition

I had bought this on GOG a couple years ago and had intended on getting back to it, it has taken me a few hours to wrap my head around what this game actually is as I was trying to complete all the quest for the first main area Fort Joy, but after watching Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an RPG Lover's Dream by Ghostcharm it's clicked and I am trying to be more open to not winning every situation as if it was a more genuine adventure.

With a 93/100 on OpenCritic for the original release, PCGamer had this to say;

Playing Divinity: Original Sin 2 is uncannily like playing a tabletop RPG. The way that Larian’s sequel embraces player creativity immediately conjures up memories of days spent sitting around a table, asking the Dungeon Master if I can attempt the last stupid idea that floated into my head. And like a good DM, Original Sin 2 usually answers that question with “Yes, you can attempt it.”

My only regret is that I got it on GOG as it was cheaper, which has made mods less friendly without the Steam Workshop, but it was a lot cheaper at the time and hasn't gone below $15.74 on Steam since.

Back in 2016 or so if you had told me that a colorful, low poly, $10 indie game would still be installed and played fairly regularly on my PC over 5 years later I would have had a hard time believing you. But here we are!

In Ravenfield you play as a soldier on the Blue (Eagle) or Red (Raven) team, battling it out over spawn points on a map. Much like Battlefield as the name suggests. The low poly count keeps framerates high in all but the most chaotic of situations. Planes fight and bomb from overhead, gunboats skim the waves and vehicles and troops fight it out until one side is nothing but ragdoll corpses and colorful paint blots.

The controls are good and the systems work pretty well all around. There are default maps, modes and weapons to enjoy but the the real magic of the game comes from the amazing mod scene. Ever wanted to know what a D-Day landing would turn out like if one side had nerf guns and the other side had muskets? Ever wanted to fly big paper airplanes to dogfight flying couches? How about diving into a fictional World War 1 esqe universe that had waaay more lore and detail than it has any right to have? Yup you can do all of it and more.

I'm so glad to see how far this game and their mods have grown over the years. If you like a fun little shooter that you can take offline or boot up for a quick session, I recommend giving this one a look.

I haven't seen a PlayStation 5 Greatest Hits collection yet and I've never heard of games being re-released with latest patches/content, with the exception of No Man's Sky Beyond on PS4 and the soon-to-be released Cyberpunk 2077 for the PS5. Curious if EA will do something for Jedi Survivor.

Normally, I would just resort to getting it on the PC but I'm in no rush (still haven't played the first one yet) and my PC badly needs a new GPU.

Alan Wake (2013) was the first game I bought on Steam back in July of 2013 and I enjoyed it, but I never got around to completing it.

In a months time it will have been a year since I started that game and I still plan to finish it. It is starting to feel a bit dated and I know there is a remaster, but I feel compelled to finish the original copy I've been sitting on for the last decade.

I believe it was the first digital game I bought and at the time it was a weird concept to buy a game I couldn't give away or sell.

367

I.e., games that hooked you in and you couldn't stop playing until it was finished. Not games that just happened to be unexpectedly short. And by "completed" I guess I mean the main story etc, not 100%ing the game :).

For me, it would be Catherine, Bioshock Infinite and Black Mesa (although I think I got to the final area then had to go to sleep and complete it the next day). I also played an ungodly amount of Hades in one sitting, but didn't get the "full" ending in one day.

Welcome everyone, thank you all for being here! That is all I have to say <3

In my case, the OG Xbox. The first console I got, so definitely nostalgia tinted feeling. Fable, Dead or Alive and Star Wars Jedi Outcast are probably my most played games on that platform.

I just started playing Curse for the first time the other night, and the gameplay/mechanics have been so much fun. I've tried claws, machete, pistol, and whip so far, but I'd love to hear about which weapon combos or full builds you found the most fun! What all did you like about them?
