Dual ATTO R680's? (zerobytes.monster)

I've had a single R680 in my machine controlling 2 GSPEED EsPro's for the better part of what seems like an eternity! Why haven't I upgraded to anything newer/faster/better...because it just works! This setup has been put through the ringer and has NEVER let me down.

What I'm curious to know about is if it is possible to run dual ATTO R680's to expand my storage with an additional 8 drives.

My other thought would be to either jump to 8- 20TB drives or find a 4-channel SAS card with onboard RAID capabilities. I have 2 more EsPros that can be added and would like to put them to use if it makes sense.

I'm a video editor by trade, therefore I live and die by redundancy for short-term (12-18 month) storage. The LTO gets fired up for archiving.

My files are on a NAS and I back that up to an external drive which I leave at my office in case something happens to my home. However, I do not have anything monitoring the integrity of the files on the NAS, so if there was any some bits that flipped, I'd likely never know and continue copying those to the backup until everything was eventually overwritten (I do not have infinite storage). Are there any free softwares (Windows) that can monitor for changes in files? It would seem pretty easy to build a database of chksums and compare, surely someone had made something like this? Bonus would be if it can do error correcting.

My goal is to burn files like images (RAW/.CR3), ZIP-Files, and other stuff onto Blu-ray discs. The files should be encrypted and compressed (if possible) to save disc space.

But what I want to avoid is a medium dependency, so putting 1TB Data into a split zip file and burn them onto many discs should not be the solution.

The problem is that you only know the compression size after compressing, so trying each combination to find the optimal solution would take too long. Also compressing every file singularly is not an option, because compressing multiple files is generally more effective.

What I am looking for is an optimal combination of data, where the dependency on multiple discs is as low as possible and the Blu-rays are filled as full as possible.

How did you solve this problem or what is your strategy when burning discs?

I am looking for a new 20TB+ drive. Money is not really an issue, but noise is.

Which of these drives would you recommend for low noise levels? Please only answer if you actually have experience with them.

The YouTube video is a live performance from the band blues traveler on late night with David Letterman from January 2, 1996. Letterman‘s company removed a video a year or so back. Here’s a link.

Any David letterman collectors out there that might be able to help me track down the specific live performance or full episode?

Anyone have a line on where I could access old episodes of Larry King Live? There's one specific episode from January 31, 2001 that I'm really looking for in which he interviews Patty Hearst. A watermarked clip of it used to be up on CNN here but the video doesn't work anymore and also looking for a non-watermarked version of it. I've already checked the best of DVD collections, youtube, and everywhere else I can think of online and while I've found a different interview with her on the show, no dice on that 1/31/01 episode yet.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Hello! I am the manager of a DJ and production company. We have a 16tb server, with 4tb of it being music only for our DJ's to use. I've done my best over the years keeping it clean, but it's definitely pretty bad at this point. I searched the group and found a couple recommendations - but couldn't find an answer if beets.io or similar will work on a Synology Nas or not. We are using a DS416 that does not support docker unfortunately.

As part of my semi-regularly-scheduled "what can I improve/mess with" task, I'm thinking about ways to improve my backup strategy or make sure it's at least something resembling "good." Here's an overview of the setup I currently use:

  • DS920+ Production NAS, SHR-1, 4x 14TB HDD, ~37TB total formatted capacity
  • DS220j backup NAS, JBOD, 2x 20TB HDD, ~36TB total formatted capacity
  • PowerEdge R710 running bare metal TrueNAS, raidz2 6x 14TB HDD, ~51TB total formatted capacity
  • 14TB WD EasyStore

The DS920+ uses shared folder sync a couple of times a week to sync to the DS220j.

The R710 is powered on weekly by a plink script on another always-on computer, then the DS220j uses it as a Hyper Backup target. The same always-on computer powers the R710 off 12 hours after it's powered on.

The DS220j has a USB Copy task set to copy the entirety of its volume's contents to a 14TB WD EasyStore every time it is connected. I keep this off site and bring it home once a month.

Some improvements I'm considering:

  • buying another WD EasyStore so I can swap between the one at home and the one off site
  • considering running both Shared Folder Sync and Hyper Backup from the DS920+ instead of going 920>220>R710
  • considering colocating DS220j and running Tailscale from 920+ to 220j (not sure how/if the 220j's CPU can handle WireGuard)

I am not a data scientist, I don't even work in tech, so this is strictly a hobby for me - I'm very sure I'm doing something dumb, so please keep that in mind while reading this and weighing in. Just looking for ways to potentially make this more robust and efficient.

i do see the difference in the cache the x18 having 256 mb and the x22 512 mb and the size 18 to 22 tb.

I would ask whats more worth to go for..... what do i mean the x18 for 250€ or x22 for 435€ and if that would be right for gaming.both have 7200 rpm but kinda having 36tb for 500€ or 900€ for 44tb

First off excuse my ignorance in advance because I'm more of a plug-and-play type of user. I had this old 5 bay JOBOD working with an SATA controller card connected to a Mac Pro tower which was used as a non-RAID backup system. I replaced the now non-working Mac Pro with a Mac Mini and tried connecting it to the JOBOD with a USB-c to eSATA cable. The new mac's finder only recognizes whatever drive is in the bottom bay. Is this a conversion cable or controller card issue? Specific hardware or cable recommendations would be especially helpful. I don't have the expertise to understand why the old JOBOD can't be upgraded when there are plenty of new ones available that can work to do the same thing.

i have a bunch of computers that i have replaced with newer models. i have them because i have data (documents, emails, etc.) that i want to save. i am looking for a solution where i can warehouse emails. i played around with the thought of using one of my old servers with an old copy of enterprise server which had a copy of exchange.

my solution thus far has been using a desktop or a server with an os running an email client and importing mailboxes from all the computers and moving forward allowing it to download a copy of emails.

TLDR:

I'm thinking of buying these for using for video and picture backup. Videos will be hooked up to a jellyfin (basically like plex) server so my wife can watch them. Do I need to worry about CMR vs SMR for the HDDS?

Bay (run in raid 5):

HDD(SMR):

HDD(CMR):

Long:

I am currently running an old 4tb drive that I got for my old gaming and I've been using it to back up all of our old videos and pictures. It's hooked up to a Jellyfin server to serve up the videos for watching as we need. The hard drive is starting to fill up though so I am looking at expanding but I'm not sure if CMR vs SMR matters for what I am doing. It sounds like CMR is all around better in every way other than price where it costs more, but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra money where I won't be writing a lot I'll mostly just be reading after writing a single time.

I have two data storage and backup needs and I'm curious if an easy solution exists that takes care of both. Want a physical solution, not something cloud or subscription based. Is there a single solution that would allow me to do the following:

  1. backup photos and videos from two android phones

  2. network storage that I can access from my laptop. Something that acts like a hard drive disk (like the c drive) so that I can store various files, photos, music, etc. my laptop has a relatively small SSD so I want to primarily use it for software and store files on a network storage. I don't have a desk for my laptop so something attached to the router is ideal.

Hi there,

I have ssd enclosure with adata legend 800 m.2 nvme ssd inside. Where I work, we can't print out documents using our industrial printers over the network, so we have to carry thumb drives with us.

The printers only support fat32 drives, my drive is exfat because I work between mac and windows. Therefore I put two partitions on the drive, one is exfat with 900gb and the other one is 30gb fat32. The idea was to put my larger files on the exfat partition and the files to print on the fat32 partition. Unfortunately, the printers can't recognize either partition. I know for a fact, that fat32 has to work because everyone at work has fat32 drives. Maybe only the first, larger partition is recognized, which would be exfat and can't be accessed, so the printer doesn't even try to open the other one...Is there any solution? Or should I just format the whole drive to fat32?

Thanks in advance!

This is just something that's been on my mind but before I start, I wanted to say that obviously I realize that the vast majority of the users here don't fall into this, but I think it could be an interesting discussion.

What one may call 'Tech Literacy' is on the decline as companies push more and more tech that is 'User Friendly' which also means 'Hostile to tinkering, just push the magic button that does the thing and stop asking questions about how it works under the hood'. This has also leaned itself to piracy where users looking to pirate things increasingly rely on 'A magic pirate streaming website, full of god awful ads that may or my not attempt to mind crypto through your browser, where you just push the button'. I once did a panel at an anime convention, pretending on fandom level efforts to preserve out of print media, and at the Q&A at the end, a Zoomer raised their hand and asked me 'You kept using this word 'Torrent', what does that mean?' It had never occurred to me as I had planned this panel that should have explained what a 'torrent' was. I would have never had to do that at an anime convention 15 years ago.

Anyway, getting to the point, I've noticed the occasional series of 'weird posts' where someone respectably wants to preserve something or manipulate their data, has the right idea, but lacks some core base knowledge that they go about it in an odd way. When it comes to 'hoarding' media, I think we all agree there are best routes to go, and that is usually 'The highest quality version that is closest to the original source as possible'. Normally disc remuxes for video, streaming rips where disc releases don't exist, FLAC copies of music from CD, direct rips from where the music is available from if it's not on disc, and so on. For space reasons, it's also pretty common to prefer first generation transcodes from those, particularly of BD/DVD content.

But that's where we get into the weird stuff. A few years ago some YouTube channel that just uploaded video game music is getting a take down (Shocking!) and someone wants to 'hoard' the YouTube channel. ...That channel was nothing but rips uploaded to YouTube, if you want to preserve the music, you want to find the CDs or FLACs or direct game file rips that were uploaded to YouTube, you don't want to rip the YouTube itself.

Just the other day, in a quickly deleted thread, someone was asking how to rip files from a shitty pirate cartoon streaming website, because that was the only source they could conceive of to have copies of the cartoons that it hosted. Of course, everything uploaded to that site would have come from a higher quality source that the operates just torrented, pulled from usenet, or otherwise collected.

I even saw a post where someone could not 'understand' handbrake, so instead they would upload videos to YouTube, then use a ripping tool to download the output from YouTube, effectively hacking YouTube into being a cloud video encoder... That is both dumbfounding but also an awe inspiring solution where someone 'Thought a hammer was the only tool in the world, so they found some wild ways to utilize a hammer'.

Now, obviously 'Any copy is better than no copy', but the cracks are starting to show that less and less people, even when wanting to 'have a copy', have no idea how to go about correctly acquiring a copy in the first place and are just contributing to generational loss of those copies.

I am trying to work out a solution that fits my needs but I am at a loss.

Currently I was using a Kingston Data Traveler Locker G3+ secure USB drive but I forgot my password and it locked me out - making the drive and data useless.

I need to do the following.

  1. Files are stored on a usb drive - which I can then use with my own personal desktop at home and lapotop whilst at work.

  2. Work has PCs which I use daily. Eithe generic hot desks or a shared laptop.

I travel on the train and find the patchy connections means I have to work off the USB drive.

So can anyone suggest a solution where I have local access as well as remote / cloud backup as I don't want all my data on the usb and then either lose that or be locked out of it.

I tend to work in areas that have patchy or unreliable internet hence the use of USB drive.

Also I may need to rethink how I work - so any suggestions are welcome.

I want to a reliable backup storage for my pictures and video files but want to stay away from external HD. I was hoping yall could help me. Would it be a good option to install an internal HD, then download all my files into it, then unplug HD until the next batch of files. Ive read internal HD are more reliable which is why im going this route. Any other options out there that dont require spending too much other than the HD itself or having to build something costly? Thanks

Hi, guys! Recently I put together all my VHS tapes I want to convert to digital. I played some of them in VHS player that I had borrowed. And here was the problem. First time I watched them the image was good. For the second time some artifacts kept appearing on the screen: once every 10-30 seconds white noise kept showing up on the screen and then dissappering and it kept repeating. When I rewinded and fast forwarded the tapes there was no such artifacts or noises on the screen.

I stopped watching all my tapes because I thought I had damaged them somehow....

My questions is could I have damaged my VHS tapes simply by playing them? Or maybe it was the faulty VHS player that had dust on its reading head?

Like i mentioned i just wanna know mayor differences between them-besides the size(TB), loudness and price differences. One kinda does go to the side of gaming and the other to server storage...but on the net its kinda stated that for an HDD you would need a HDD with 7200 RPM...but they both have such RPM. Whit tha i would say that then the exos to can be used for gaming or?

Would appreciate any info on this.....and for grammarly mistakes im sorry its not my first language.

I am transferring 500GB approx from an amazon s3 bucket based in London. I'm using an aws ec2 instance to transfer the data by smtp to idrive, but I am incurring charges from amazon for data transfer to idrive. I thought the idrive london was amazon s3? Shouldn't that mean as both are amazon london there are no data transfer charges from amazon?

Hello there, I want to create again my home NAS server (older Pc with Ubuntu server). Right now I'm using RAID 1 with 2 purple WDs and with auto suspend after 1 hour of inactivity.

Question is: which color (version) of HDD to use? I figured out, that purple is not suitable for my use case because it should be used 24/7, and I turn on NAS about 3-5 times a week for couple of hours ( I use it mainly as backup storage)

I'm thinking about red, but it again isn't it designed for 24/7? Or perhaps go for some standard PC version with higher fault tolerance.

Thanks a lot guys
