Most searches come up with work arounds of downloaded from archive sites, or outdated methods.

I seen recurbate has their own downloader that is limited to 1 video at a time but is subscription based.

What's the best or easiest solution to just set up to run in the background and let it do it's thing?

I'm running W11 if that's relevant.

Hi,

I have a PC which is running Win 10 Home (I intend to upgrade to Win 10 Pro).

I use it to run my CCTV (BlueIris) and also as a media server (with KODI) and as a backup server. I also have a bunch of other backup disks which I want to consolidate into one location.

It has an i5 9400 and a Z390-A PRO motherboard, with 16GB of RAM.

I have looking at buying a USB attached DAS that I can connect to it but have been underwhelmed by the offerings. I want to be able to directly access the disks from Windows so that I can encrypt the disks with either Bitlocker or VeraCrypt, and also image the disks with Macrium Reflect, and also back them up with Backblaze Personal Backup.

So, I am wondering if it would be possible to use an MD1200 instead. From what I have read so far it seems that the MD1200 will take SATA disks (I have a collection of SG Ironwolfs and EXOS, ranging from 4TB to 16TB), but what I am not clear on is whether I can connect the Desktop PC direct to the MD1200.

I have read that an HBA card can be used, but all of the posts I have seen talk about servers, so I am not sure that it can be put into a PC and used to directly access the disks in an MD1200 as if it were a USB attached DAS, with all of the MD1200 drives showing up as disks in Disk Management.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

We have over 600TB of data backed in LTO-8 Tapes. In 2 year have had 3 Tapes Drives failures with E6 error. But, I find that the general consensus is these are reliable. I suspect it may be due to excess dust or temperature change due to significant dust in the air where I live and hot summer months.

I'm willing to spend extra on a model/brand if the hardware is of better quality and gives me the best odds. Ours were Quantum. I will update with Exact model shortly.

Hi everyone, I’m searching for a 4bay DAS but each and every one listed on Amazon has some 1-star reviews telling that the disks do get corrupted after some months/years of use and I can’t take that risk with personal data. (I know I should and I do backup, but still would like a correctly functioning product)

Can you suggest me one that actually works? In this sub I’ve seen the Mediasonic Probox suggested, but it isn’t available in my zone (EU).

Thanks everyone for the support

I have five 6TB drives in a QNAP TVS-672XT 6-bay NAS, one of which is Red Plus and the others are Red Pro. I am planning to purchase two more drives, one to fill the 6th bay and one to replace the Red Plus, which I just realized is only 5400rpm. I am considering the following:

  • Buy 2x Red Pro 6TB at $199 each - This will result in my NAS having 6 identical drives

WD acoustic specs indicate 29dB idle and 36dB seeking. Speed is 238 MB/s and cache is 256 MB.

  • Buy 2x Red Pro 16TB at $249 each - I don't need this much space. However, I noticed WD is currently running a sale for $499 total for two of these drives. It's tempting to "future proof" in case I eventually need more space, but maybe it's just a waste of $100. (To take advantage of the extra space in a RAID 6 setup, would I eventually need to upgrade the other 4 drives to 16TB as well?)

WD acoustic specs indicate 20db idle and 36db seeking. Speed is 259 MB/s and cache is 512 MB.

  • Buy 2x Red Plus 10TB, 12TB, or 14TB at $199, $229, or $259 each respectively - 10TB is the smallest option I would consider for Red Plus since the lower capacity drives are only 5400rpm. I would consider this option if noise will be significantly lower and performance not noticeably different from Red Pro. Though, I see also that Red Pro has a longer warranty.

WD acoustic specs indicate 34dB/28dB for the 10TB model and 20dB/29dB for the 12TB and 14TB. Based on that alone, I would probably avoid the 10TB, but not sure if it's a noticeable difference in practice. Speed is also listed at 215 MB/s and 210 MB/s for the 10TB and 14TB models, but only 196 MB/s for 12TB. Cache for all three is 256 MB

Will there be much noise or performance difference between these options? I'm also wondering why the 16TB Red Pro is on sale. It seems that this particular drive has been on sale before and I'm wondering if there's any particular issues with it such as excessive noise compared to the other Red Pros.

I also see slight differences in power consumption, with the 10TB Red Plus using the most energy of the three Red Plus options and the 16TB Red Pro using slightly less energy while in use but slightly more energy when idle compared to the 6TB. Not sure if the difference will be noticeable on my power bill.

I am mostly using the NAS to store my photos and videos, with some photo editing in Lightroom/Photoshop and video editing in Premiere. Also planning to start backing up to Backblaze and setting up VPN for remote access to my files. Read/write speeds are currently only in the 200-300 MB/s (over Thunderbolt 3 connection to MB Pro), so I'm hoping to speed things up.

This. New drives all shipping from Amazon. The 14TB drive at $13.21/TB.

But $114 more to get the extra 2TB of the 16TB drive size. But from there, $11 for 2TB more, and $5 for the next 2 after that. This is my watch list and I've seen an outlier before, but never this mix of crazy prices. Last 16Tb drive I bought was $220, a year ago. Are we in another time of "prices are stuck"? Is the supply chain still broken?

Hey Reddit, I have a Seasonic M12II 620W, and I've run out of PSU SATA connectors. Currently, I have 3 cables (4 connectors each) in place, running 10 HDDs, 1 SSD, and 1 fan controller. I want to add one more SSD to my build for Truenas Scale. How safe is it for me to purchase one of these SATA PSU splitters?

Now no need to tell me but I know that these appears to be molded sata cables(can't find any crimped y cables in the market for some strange reason). But other than that it should be fairly safe?

I'm currently trying to figure out how to cost effectively backup over 10 years worth of photography (5TB+). I'm a prime member so I figured I'd try the free, unlimited photo storage. Most of the files are NEF files (which are explicitly supported) but there are also some PSD and a whole bunch of XMPs. According to what I've read online these files shouldn't upload... but they do. Everything shows as uploaded and is available for download. I can also preview the PSDs online no problem. So... what's going on here? Will this actually work in the long run or will I eventually be forced to download those files lest they be removed?

I recently bought the Brother ADS-1200 after seeing it recommended here multiple times, so I'm hoping someone here can help me fix this. I have it set up and a single sheet scans fine, but when I put in multiple pages they all scan at the same time. Any ideas on how I can fix this and get a multi-page scan that scans each page?

I am planning on updating my network to 10gb (from 2.5gbe). This is because I am planning on ordering 8gbps Internet (upgrade from my current 1.5gbps).

In order to fully exploit the bandwidth increase I want to upgrade my storage (currently 8x 4TB HDDs in a 6 column dual parity Storage Spaces setup). While NVMe would be ideal the price would be quite high as I would not only have to buy 20TB of NVMe it also requires at least 5x M.2 slots (more with single/dual parity). I am unsure my motherboard can support that many even with PCI-E bifurcation.

I could buy 2x more 4TB HDDs and rebuild Storage Spaces with 10 columns (I *ALWAYS* keep enough cold storage on hand to fully backup my Storage Spaces at least once, so no funny conversion business).

The question is this: Does Storage Spaces support 10 columns (8 data + 2 parity), and if so will it achieve 800mbps read/write on HDDs? The theoretical math says yes to the second part, but I am concerned that issues like overhead will play a non-insignificant role in actual real-world performance.

Thanks in advance!

I get sent a lot of photos and videos on Kik and saving each one manually (especially after a few days off) is tedious.

Is there a way to get it so when they’re sent they auto save? I can use iOS, Android, or Bluestacks or something on a PC if it helps.

tia!

I want to backup my laptop on a weekly basis (with roughly 1 TB of data on it).

After parsing through this subreddit, I've learned that :

  • I should follow the 3-2-1 rule (which is what I was naturally gravitating towards anyways)
  • SMR disks are far inferior to CMR as their speeds decreases as the disk fills up
  • You should always buy a internal disk + an enclosure as backup disks sold as a single unit are bottom of the barrel
  • CMR HDD unfortunately only seem to exist in a 3,5" format, and their enclosure requires a power supply, which makes them fairly cumbersome.
  • SSD are not as reliable as HDD and should not be considered for cold storage.

I'd like to keep my backup solutions fairly small and mobile, as I'm a renter (in a small apartment) and I have to move often due to my job. I'm thus a bit put off by the bulkyness of 3,5" enclosures and their need for a power supply.

Taking into account all these, I intend to :

  1. Buy a 2 TB Seagate Firecuda SSD, paired with a Sabrent enclosure, to back up my whole disk on a weekly basis.
  2. Buy a 2 TB Seagate Barracuda HDD (which is SMR and in a 2,5" format), paired with a Sabrent enclosure, to leave at my parents' place to backup every ~6 months when I visit.
  3. Buy a 512 GB USB key (SanDisk Ultra Lux) to keep on my keychain, where I'll backup the most important stuff, and that'll be with me at all times.

Does this sound like a decent plan given my needs, or should I really aim for something different?

NB :

  • I might also backup on the cloud further down the line when I've figured out a proper way to encrypt everything before uploading it.

  • I intend to use rsync to backup.

  • All disks will be, of course, encrypted.

I have to rotate videos a lot for what I do for work and I would love it if there was a way to make it really fast and seamless. It's fine if this thing opens up a terminal or a gui to finish the process, but just being able to rotate with a single click would be amazing.

Any ideas?

Hi, I have around 60 mini DV tapes that were mostly recorded using a JVC GR470U, but mine has cracked reel discs (a very common problem that affects all cameras of this make) so finding a working one, OR one of those parts that aren't cracked isn't an option. If I bought a camera from a different brand like sony for example, to transfer the tapes through firewire, will I have any issues? I heard using a different device can cause dates to be missing or different audio playing speeds. What should I buy to do this transfer? Thank you!

Original Title: Let's say I restore the user data from my old Macbook to my new Macbook using 1 of my 3 external hard drive back ups. What do I do then with my other external hard drives, if I want to use them as back-ups for my new Mac, but they contain back-ups of my old Mac?

Question title. Complete newbie. Please walk me through this.

I specifically have in mind external hard drives working with automatic back-up programs, like Time Machine, or WD MyPassport for Mac or Seagate which have their own software to do automatic scheduled back-ups of my Mac. So I have three of these type of back-ups, and I restore from one of them, but they're all still set up for automatic back-up of my old Macbook. What then happens when I plug them into my new Macbook? Once I restore my new Macbook from one of them, am I supposed to erase the external hard drives and create new back-ups from my new Macbook? Or could I just start backing up my new Macbook onto the old back-ups and the new back-ups from my new Mac will overwrite the old back-ups?

Hi all,

I've used the search function but was unable to find a post that relates to my question.

I'm comparing cloud storage / archiving services right now and I've stumbled upon a metric called "data resiliency" or "durability" that is used by both OVH and AWS.

OVH Cold Archive gives a data resilience rate of "99.99%" in their FAQ. They claim to achieve this by storing the data on magnetic tape. ()

Meanwhile, AWS states their data durability rate to be "99.999999999%". ()

I do understand these numbers in terms of "availability of a service", but I'm having a hard time figuring out what these numbers mean in terms of "resiliency". Can somebody explain to me, what exactly these numbers mean and how the additional 9s compare to each other?

Does it mean that, in the time span of a year, AWS will lose 0.000000001% of all files stored with them?

Or that any file uploaded to OVH Cold Archive has a chance of 0.001% of being lost for every year it is stored?

In anyone did miss it and cares for WD blue 8tb drives, Western Digital site.

I have been shopping for extra storage on NEW CMR drives, saw if you use Slickdeals10off coupon code with Western Digital site , plus freeshipping 8tb blue 256 mb revision / version is 117$ before taxes. Ordered mine so coupon code worked for me yesterday 1/12 . For months this seems like a excellent deal for NEW 8tb drives.

I've found a Nuuo NVRmini NV-4080S DVR, which has the same PCB as a Promise NS4600 and Patriot Javelin S4, so I decided to get rid of the crap firmware to install Debian on it.

I've mostly followed what's explained there: except I'm not using NFS. The setup seems to work fine there.

Booting a kernel + initrd from an USB stick or from the Flash, with the rootfs on an USB stick or a SATA HDD works successfully. Although, it's only able to detect USB or SATA devices when typing commands into U-Boot, even if it's only Ctrl+C and "run mybootcommand".

Anytime I try to get U-Boot to start automatically (I've set "bootcmd 'run mybootcommand'" and saveenv), it detects no USB stick nor SATA HDD, and either fails booting or kernel panics since it can't find its rootfs. I've also tried adding delays at the beginning of the boot command with no success.

Does anyone have an idea about the issue?

This seems to be at least $50 cheaper than any other retailer.

Has anyone here bought high-capacity HDDs from them?

Are there any problems with getting warranty replacements if you bought from them?

I need 6-13 20-22TB HDD relatively cheap (SG Exos and other comparable HDDs).

I nearly bought a Host-Managed drive today. Luckily I stumbled across it on my searching. I had no idea that existed.

I'm in search of a Western Digital 18 or 20TB drive used for backup storage only.

Are there certain model numbers I should look out for to avoid making this mistake?

It’s there a higher probability that if you carry it with you every where, it can be stolen than if you leave it in a safe place in your house, it can be burned down or watered down?

What’s the best advice to protect that sole hard drive that you have for the moment until you can start being affordable for a next one?

I have 2 SATA drives on a 9211-4i HBA in IT mode and 4 on onboard SATA in RAIDZ-2. One of the drives in the array seems to be on its way out and I'm looking at a good deal on a WD HC520 SAS drive.

It's a 4kn drive and the array is formatted with 16k sectors I think so shouldn't be any issues there.

I really really do not want to get a SAS backplane unless I get to a point that all drives are SAS. This drive has the 3.3V SATA power issue so I will need the SATA tape fix or a molex to SATA adapter. Is that right?

There seems to be a hundred types of SAS cable.. which one do I need to connect the HDD to the HBA? I'm pretty sure the HBA has a 2x SFF-8087 ports. What does the HDD have, I assume you can't plug a SAS to SATA breakout cable into it? Or can I use the existing breakout cable for data and it's just the power I have to do a little differently?

Can I use a SAS HDD and a SATA HDD connected on the same cable to the HBA? I know you shouldn't on a backplane. If not, is it enough to just connect the SAS HDD to one port on the HBA and the SATA HDD to the other?

Is there anything else to consider?
