In this instance, should we ban NSFL, hardcore gore content? I think it's not a problem since anyone can subscribe to the community they want but if the vast majority don't want it, we can ban it. Decisions must be made from the beginning.

Here's a StrawPoll link.

Edit: Looks like we are going to ban it. Commenters are right that we cannot currently list NSFW and NSFL content separately on the homepage. Since anyone can open an instance, we should let other people to open an instance on lemmynsfl.com. Also moderating these communities can be hard too. So it's okay.

Thank you for consulting the community. Also you might want to add it to the instance rules asap

I like the idea of blocking until we have more granular filters. This instance will be more successful if it's not blocked by loads of instances, and I reckon allowing stuff like this will make the block choice too easy.

I also did in my instance at federotica.com
Porn and gore don't really work well together in my experience. Gore sites often attract "free speech" folks i.e. nazis, redneck racists, antisemites, homophobes, edgelords etc.
Unfortunately those are also the most active users on gore sites. If you really want to run a porn or nsfw site you're better off not allowing them. I know the decision is already done (luckily) but there are good reasons you shouldn't allow them. Sites that allow complete "free speech" devolve into a trash site that just posts noise (look at efukt or 4chan).

as a former edgelord, please ban it

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think it should be banned since, as of now, there is no way to hide gore by default.

Let's say I'm browsing the instance and choose to explore some new communities, so I turn on the local filter. I (and I think all the people who are not into gore, which I suppose is the majority) do NOT want, even by mistake, to see gore in my feed, especially if I'm looking for "normal" porn.

Yeah, I could block the communities, but this would mean finding them, interacting with them, and then blocking them, which is not something I want to do.

This is also a good point. While i like the idea of having the title of this instance make sense (meaning having anything NSFW including gore) I also reckon you have a point in that we have no way of blocking gore by default. But maybe thats where more instances come in? like an instance called LemmyPorn or whatnot? I'm not sure.. its like the wild west out here!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This could be solved by introducing tags/flairs for communities (set by the instance's admin and mandatory for communities) which the users can use to filter the kind of communities they want/do not want to see. Does anyone know if lemmy devs are already planning to do this?

those guys are barely holding servers together atm, it will get worse over the next two days (and maybe longer) before it gets better, but i'm sure theyll get to it eventually. So for now I think we have to make do and just say that this instance is non-gore only, since we cant filter it out.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

100% agreed

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have nothing against drawn gore, though it's not something I'm into myself, but I think others are right that the content filtering we have now isn't enough to allow users to avoid it if we do permit it.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

If we can make our own patches to lemmy we could supply a nsfl tag which could be distinctly different to the nsfw tag in that it:

  1. Doesn't show to people who have nsfl disabled
  2. Doesn't federalize this content or share it outside of lemmynsfw, but then that would defeat the purpose of lemmy idk

I always felt like reddit should have added a separate nsfl toggle as it's in a whole other ballpark, maybe lemmy could implement it?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Yes please ban it. Or maybe create another gore tag and let users automatically block or blur that content as they wish I guess that is the best of both worlds (Even though I persoinally cant find anything good in the "gore world" :) )

I suppose you need to decide what is NSFW. Is it only the Lewd images people are posting? That's pretty tame. Are you going to accept nude/porn/hardcore porn/fetish/furry? Violence? Drugs? Nsfl can be nsfw.

So what is the purpose of this community?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

agree. NSFW is such a broad thing to be a community. Atm we need to build specified communities for different topics. Like there could be a porn community and a gore community separately. and then go from there to more specific things like an amateur porn community, or to hentai, or fight videos etc.

For now tho definitely need to just pick one or the other. I cant imagine a porn/gore community being super successful cos those are two WILDLY different moods for most ppl

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

The instance and communities are different things. Communities can have their own rules about NSFW or NSFL contents. This community ([email protected] ) is only for updates about lemmynsfw.com. People can subscribe any community on lemmynsfw.com.

Now that we've made the distinction, what I want to ask here is should we block NSFL communities on the lennynsfw.com instance?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

But dont posts from all communities in an instance show if you're browsing on local.

That could be hella jarring for someone who doesn't want to see gore. Imo there really should be a feature that differentiates nsfl and nsfw in lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Oh now i understand. Thanks for the explanation. In this case yes, I think both should be allowed, so people can make separate communities for each. Both porn and gore are considered NSFW so they both fall under the banner of our instance :D

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Yes - just that. Yes - ban gore.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm surprised that all the scat communities were banned as NSFL without any warning or discussion here. What's up with that?

[–] [email protected] -2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (4 children)

According to our poll, we had already banned NSFL. We decided among the admins that scat content is within the scope of NSFL and therefore we banned it too.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

This is not okay. Unlike gore which clearly has significant ethical issues, scat causes no harm and is simply disliked by many people. Scat is already banned in many places of discussion, meaning that people in this fetish are forced to gather in places where actual child porn and bestiality is, because they literally have no other choice.

Don't do this to us, please. The community did not ask for this. Please, throw us a lifeline. Don't make us go to a scummy instance full of creeps and actual pedophiles.

EDIT: How can I raise this with the admin team? I'd like to make my argument to repeal this decision and have you guys look at it one last time. We might be able to come to a happier solution ❤

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

That still should have been communicated to the mods of those communities, rather than just banning with no notice.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

How have these communities been banned without any notice? How are you better or different than Spez? I fully agree with what @Leanne is saying, scat is not ethically wrong, it's just disliked by people. You should have opened a dialogue about it instead of straight up banning it for a reason that doesn't even make sense. We do not deserve this.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Since the poll for allowing scat has finished, can you restore the deleted communities, or is all of our hardwork gone?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

No... I don't understand why they would be banned.
