So far I prefer the look of the current steam controller

Yeah i agree, this Controller doesn't look comfortable for any job.

Im waiting to get trolled and have no back paddles or something.

That's to predictable. They will replace the right joystick with gyro instead.

I wonder why removable / replaceable modules aren't a thing in controllers. This render looks like they are trying to stuff as many things as they can onto the controller and it may not end up being as comfortable as a result. Would be neat if I could swap out a thumb stick for a touch pad for example. Ofc I'm just blowing smoke out of my ass and it could be comfortable already.

To be fair the deck also looked really uncomfortable to hold to me but it is comfortable.

Yeah, we cant judge by the rendering alone. May not even be final either.

Do you have large hands? I do, so I 3D printed some grip extensions that help.

I think Thrustmaster have a patent on that. I may be misremembering, but they definitely brought out modular controllers.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Tho there still exist other modular controllers. I own a Bestoff one, tho it's of cheap quality.

Cool! I hope more of this kinda stuff becomes mainstream.

It looks like a placeholder image to me. :/ Those touchpads look pretty uncomfortable.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

Looks like they learned a lot from the Steam Deck!

So what were everyone's thoughts on the original? Do we think the new one will be better?

I had two of the original steam controllers. I don't think I played a single game with them.

I use the Steam Controller still for games like Doom Eternal, Left 4 Dead 2, Spin Rhythm XD, The Finals, etc.

Basically any first or third person game that has aiming, but I am not sold on the Deck touchpads as primary inputs. Tried it and didn't like it. Found them uncomfortable, size too small, and shape resulting in inconsistent swipes as someone who likes to target a consistent 180 on an edge to edge swipe.

So it will be a good controller for dual joystick users who occasionally want to use the touchpads, but not a good follow up to Steam Controller users who wanted a new controller to use the touchpads for a majority of their games.

I liked the original but thought the inclusion an analog stick but not a dpad was strange. I much prefer this new look at except maybe would've preferred the touch pad zones to be circular, but I understand and appreciate the consistency between the steam deck and this new controller. I'm hoping it far capacitive sticks for enabling gyro, that's the biggest thing I wish other controllers had.

Two analog sticks are a good improvement. That's my main gripe with the original. That said I don't know how I feel about this one. It looks like they took the two sides of the steam deck and mashed them together. I don't know if that works in a controller format.

It looks like they took the two sides of the steam deck and mashed them together.

I've seen people specifically request that they do exactly that.

[–] MrScottyTay 3 points 3 days ago

That's exactly what I've been wanting since the steam deck came out

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

They are great for some games, especially ones that were designed to be played with a mouse. I prefer other controllers for games that were designed for controller though

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

The touchpads felt inconsistent to me, compared to sticks. Otherwise not much difference to a normal controller.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Why he lookin at me like that

While I'm not that big of a fan of Microsoft, their controllers will continue to have the best D-Pad positioning, apparently...
