I've always preferred 'octopodes'. It's just such a fun word.
After reading the children of time series, I choose to use octopodes simply due to the fact that they are beautifully narcissistic little bastards in those books.

Octopuses are really good at doing heroin because they have lots of arms to choose from.
It's all just one researcher and his best pal octopus taking all the biology budget to have a blast on the weekends.

There's no "may" about it. Each octopus arm has its own little processing center to handle its unique movements, it's called the ganglia.
