Day one of Lemmy for me as well. Feels decent with Mlem app on IOS. The navigation feels a bit complicated and gotta admit I don't understand what it means to be in lemmy.world or something else. Is this like a subreddit?

No, communities are like subreddits. What you're talking about is an instance. It's like a whole other Reddit that can interact with all the other Reddits. If one Reddit starts misbehaving, the party's not over because we can all just migrate to another one.

How would that work? If an instance would misbehave, can the other instances vote them out of the federation?

No voting necessary. Instances can just choose not to associate with misbehaving instances and then there's no way for them to keep bothering you. There are a few Nazi instances out there in the fediverse but they eventually end up on an island of their own since no one will allow them in.
