Interesting, as I am not from Ireland I never heard of the guy. Reading through the article though says he doesn't adhere to moneyless lifestyle anymore:

Boyle gave up his moneyless lifestyle in 2011

But maybe just to buy those shoes he got and then he continued with as little as possible? Doesn't say in there.
