Tom Nook is a tanuki, not a raccoon. Tanuki aren't raccoons they just look like them kinda. Tanuki are canines, whereas Raccoons are in the family Procyonidae. Raccoons' front paws are hand-like, whereas Tanukis' front paws are like a dog. Raccoons are native to North America, while Tanuki are only native to Japan. You can never be sure about a tanuki though. They can turn into statues and fly.
